2014-2015 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On Hold as of today. Status page says the following: "Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview. Your file remains "open" and eligible for additional reviews. Final decisions for all candidates will be made the first week in February. Thank you for your patience."
When were you complete?

Status changed to Initial Review Complete "Your file has undergone an initial review. Additional review(s) will be conducted once your file is complete (receipt of Secondary Application, LORs, and fee). These reviews can take place any time between now and the end of February. Thank you for your patience!" I'm still waiting on my letters to be sent.

Application Screening Completed

Is that different from Initial review? Also, does that mean that periodically they will go over it, or just that they will review it in February when they make the final decision?

Also, does this mean that aside from the 56 the got an interview, everyone was put on hold? I know that everyone else would be speculating as well, but I would love your opinions.

Status change to "under review" early this morning, but received update e-mail this afternoon. Final LORs came in 7/14.

God, these update e-mails never fail to scare the scrap out of me. I was expecting to log on and find a rejection awaiting me.

It's different from the "Initial Review Complete" status.

Great. If *you're* on hold, I know what pile my application is headed for...

mine has said: "File complete - under review " since 7/2...

so many different statuses right now

So some people who were complete on 7/2 and 7/3 were marked as "On Hold"?

I'm IS, file complete on 7/1, with no changes. Do they not go in order of received?

No, they have a tendency to do the "super stars" first. I was complete first week of Sept., didn't get interview invite from U of M until December. U of Miami didn't get back to me until February. This will be a long and frustrating process. Just try to stay busy and focused on other things to help keep your sanity. Best wishes to all, and review the tracker for 2013, as U of Michigan certainly has a deserved reputation for openess about the process.

So do they just not put some people on hold and just keep them as "file complete" indefinitely? I'm in the same boat

I highly recommend all read the U of M school specific thread from last year, check out the MDApps for U of M folks offered interviews. Some of you will be waiting on hold until January when the last interviews are given out that end first week of Feb. They don't reject folks outright until about Feb. You just remain under review and on hold for further review. As you can see from the tracker, they get 5,300 applications for about 575 interview slots. High stats folks get interviews first, as U of M is competing with the top 10 med schools. THen the rest of us average stats folks get looked at with our ECs. Best wishes to all.

Most curious, stopped by Admissions office today to drop off paperwork, and they were closed all day. Must be out at some administrative function.

So, I was complete 7/8 and now I am on hold. I don't know whether to be happy or sad...Did I catch the adcom's eyes or was I put to the side? Such is life. :/

Is there no consensus on whether it is more advantageous to be "under review" or "on hold" after missing the first round of IIs? Does it not mean anything?
I think the best way to know would be to ask those who have gotten IIs already- anyone with an interview, were you ever on hold, or always just under review?

Although I don't have a definitive answer, I can say with certainty that it is not disadvantageous to be "under review" or "on hold." I've seen @soccerusa post stats on other threads (I swear I'm not a creeper, I just remember!) and they are certainly solid enough for plenty of II's. I know that, at many schools, a significant number of IIs are extended to those who have been put "on hold." So I wouldn't worry about it too much; focus on any other secondaries you have, wait a week or two, then check their admissions website for any updates.

If you haven't heard much by late august/early september, I would consider looking into whether they would accept a letter of intent/interest, and if they think it would strengthen your application. I know that this has worked at other schools, though I don't know about umich.

I agree with wolverine2015grad. Also, if you are still "Under Review" they simply have not gotten to your application yet. The admissions team is pretty behind schedule this cycle for understandable reasons and they have not made it through all the applications that were initially received. Once they do the preliminary screening on your application (this could take months) you will know because your status will change to either "Application Screening Complete" or "Interview Offered". If you are "on hold" (Application Screening Complete) you were not offered an immediate interview and you will have to wait to be compared to the application pool to receive an interview later in the cycle.

All of this is explained in a timeline on their website:

Personally, after the first round of IIs, I would prefer to be "Under Review" because that means I could be extended an interview as soon as admissions review my application instead of waiting for an II later in the cycle.

what about people who are "under review" who submitted before people that are "application screening complete"? Is there a reason that they would go over apps out of chronological order?

Yes, I'm not exactly sure what order they look at apps but it seems like they definitely look at people who did their undergrad at umich, IS people, and people with high stats first. They group apps together and focus on certain groups at different times. For example, last year on their twitter page sometimes they made it known when they were only looking at umich graduates or only looking at IS apps.

Why do they ask what cell carrier/phone type you have on the secondary?

Congrats to everyone with II today!! Anyone get an II without having all of their LOR in?

Once your application has finished being reviewed it either goes to "hold" or "interview," correct? I was marked complete on the 16th, so I'm thinking it's going to take some time before my app is looked over.

Congratulations to all the new interview invites! Have an excellent stay in Ann Arbor!

I believe that's correct (But I may be wrong!)
