2014-2015 University of Michigan Application Thread

I think everyone just needs to calm down. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, and attacking each other isn't going to change anyone's opinion.
True, but someone had to standup for the person that got an II and the reaction was "infuriating" to the other person. That's very disrespectful and attacks like that should not be tolerated by aspiring doctors. How would you feel if someone said you getting an II was infuriating based solely on the fact you were a URM with lower stats? That's exactly the kind of discrimination that URMs have always had to deal with.

I think the reaction had more to do with the fact that the person had yet to submit a secondary application, but I could be wrong. I don't really see why it matters, though, because the individual would have gotten an II soon after they submitted the secondary anyway.

I think this is an issue throughout the medical education system, not a single solitary stranger on the internet. Disadvantaged non-URM's receive very little breaks compared to their URM's counterparts.

@mjhhockey98 I don't think that's what it was. This person had expressed anger about URMs perceived "advantage." The argument has gotten out of hand, but these types of off the wall attacks of URMs is all to common in some of these threads.

Does anyone know the process for changing your interview date? I scheduled mine for 9/12 after receiving my II yesterday, but now need to reschedule to the other date option (9/19).

If you look at the entering class profile at U of M, someone got in with a 3.01 GPA, and someone got in with a 26 MCAT:

  • Class average sci GPA: 3.73 (Range 3.01 – 4.0)
  • Class average total GPA: 3.77 (Range 3.07 – 4.0)
  • Class average MCAT 34.35 (Range 26 – 41)

GPA/MCAT doesn't tell the whole story. Doesn't seem to be an anomly either, here are prior years' class profiles:

2012
  • Class average sci GPA: 3.75 (Range 2.66 - 4.00)
  • Class average total GPA: 3.78 (Range 2.80 - 4.00)
  • Class average MCAT 34.20 (Range 26 - 43)

2011
  • Class average GPA: 3.78 (Range 3.11 - 4.00)
  • Class average MCAT: 11.72 (Range 8.33 - 14.33)

2010
  • Class average GPA: 3.77 (Range 3.05 - 4.00)
  • Class average MCAT: 11.58 (Range 9.0 - 14.0)

I got an II in the second round that went out, I'm OOS and don't have a 4.0 nor a 40. I'm also not an URM, but I come from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background. I'm a disadvantaged non-URM, I got an II. I don't think anyone gave me a "break" in giving me an interview. I think I earned it, just like everyone else. I wouldn't want to get an interview because someone felt sorry for me, I want to get it on my own merit. Yes, some people have lower numbers than others, some are disadvantaged, some are URM, but that doesn't mean they are only getting interviews because someone gave them a break, it means they earned the interview in a different way than someone with a 4.0/40

I've been under review since 7/7, they must not be looking at these apps sequentially

Is there any proof that U of M immediately puts someone on hold or II after reviewing? And that "under review" status means they haven't seen your app yet?

I don't know how much I believe that because right under the "under review" status, it states that this can include on hold time comparing to other applications. In order to compare they would have to have viewed your app..

My status is "initial review complete." It was updated before they got my letters

Is that different than the "hold" status other people have received?
Yes, my status is Application Screening Complete.

I haven't checked last year's thread but does Michigan actually give rejections? If not then remaining Under Review might be a silent rejection after one's app has actually been looked at.

If you read last years' thread, it seemed that Michigan did not reject immediately for those who were not gotten an interview after first review, there were people who were on hold then got a relatively late interviews notice (Sep) and early admission offer (Oct). I could be wrong though. But there is certainly hope. 🙂

Right, I'm just wondering for people that aren't on hold but are still "under review" if Michigan ever gives out rejections early in the cycle.

Seems like last year they didn't go out until January, but more "hold" statuses came out around December.

Anyone know when student hosts become available on the website? Also, is it a faux pas to email the hosting email requesting one in a specific organization?

U Mich is being such a tease again. Got one of their recruitment emails this morning, encouraging me to apply.
Bro, I applied to you way back in May. You were literally the second school I entered into my primary. All I want is a little bit of love in return... seeing as I'm still in the "under review" status limbo.

Anyone think that IIs are going to come out on Monday? With their current pattern, spots are going fast. 🙁

I petrified a little bit inside after I saw the the number of interview spots that were already given out this passing Monday when I finally had my primary verified and got their secondary. I am shocked as to you weren't one of the first to get interview from them considering your level of coolness. I wonder if UMich still does 10:10 Tue or 3:33 Friday...if so, maybe tomorrow?

they don't seem as communicative this year!
My theory (not necessarily true):
Last year the AMCAS had issues with verification. So the schools weren't able to really do much at first because of the slow verification process--a lot of people seem to have a 30+day wait with submission dates even as early as late June. The admission might be able to go through everybody quickly and to update frequently. This year, the game is different. They already received at least 1/3 of expected application and the season just barely began. I guess the work load might be what kept them from actively updating, we know that they are working hard just by looking at the number of interviews already granted.

Awh, thank you. 😍 Congrats on that awesome MCAT! UMich better be sending you some love.

This process really makes me appreciate how important it is to apply early.

Yeah got that recruitment email too but then if you click on "why did I get this email?" it says "expressed interest in Michigan." wonder if there's any connection to the email and reading the application/checking the MCAT score? haha i'm definitely approaching this whole process way too analytically its probably just some random email.

I wish I applied early, however, for me that also means sacrificing the quality of everything from school finals to MCAT to primary app, so I chose to move forward in a slower but steadier pace.

The process may be slightly different this year, as Admissions Director Robert Ruiz is no longer at U of M. They have a interim director in the meantime, just announced to us new students coming on board next week.

Where did he go? He knew my name and face personally 🙁
Don't know, just know he resigned,no details forthcoming. He was as true blue as they come, had worked here for at least a decade if not longer. He will be greatly missed.

However, his staff have been long time admission admin folks, so you new applicants will be in good hands. GO BLUE!!

I just submitted my secondary. My number 1 choice, so I took a little extra time. I hope I'm not too late!!

Good luck to everyone! I hope next week brings lots and lots of IIs! Remember that many students get in with IIs from much later in the cycle, including me. Go Blue! 😀

looks like a small amount of interviews went out today, and they updated their tracker. None for me though! :[

Do y'all think "Applications Received" means complete, secondary + LoRs received...or just primary applications where the applicant has selected Michigan as a school.

It's interesting, because on MSAR, they give you "verified applications"...which I'm assuming means just primary applications.

From their twitter:
Of 3,416 apps received, 1,175 are complete (secondary app + letters of recommendation). Updated tracker at http://umhealth.me/med-adm #GoBlueMed

I thought last week when I checked the tracker it said 112 interviews given, so I'm thinking none went out today? Anyone else remember the tracker from last week?

103. AdmissionsApplications were 2,886.

Edit: That was some wishful thinking...

Oooh, thanks for that.

In this case, that's extremely deceiving lol if all you look at is the tracker, as well as the numbers that MSAR posts. -_-
Why is it deceiving?

112 interviews out of 1,175 applications vs. 3,416?

True, although not entirely deceiving since, as we've seen on the thread, UMich does offer some interviews before secondaries/LORs are submitted.

Yes, if things were not confusing enough without that fact... 🙂
Eventually, you either get an II or you don't, the statistics don't matter that much.

Exactly. According to last year's comment, UMich doesn't look at secondary and LOR in the first part of the cycle.

Also, as confusing as it may feel like, I wouldn't call it deceiving. come on, where else you find a school as transparent as the blue?

for those of you with interview invites, what was the sequence of status updates that you received?
