2014-2015 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I interviewed on 9/26 for those people wondering. Accepted last night. ( forgot to post this info in my glee)

Hey guys,

Received a "Decision Deferred to December" status. I have not ever really heard of this as an option when decisions come out. Does anyone know the odds or an anecdote of someone who has gone through this at Michigan? Ya I am a little bummed since I really liked this school. Wish I had got the acceptance :/

If you dig through last year's threads and old @UMichMedAdmiss tweets, it seems like they each interview date they accept about 60% percent, waitlist about 30%, and defer about 10% (note: this is based on old data and my cursory look). Last year, they had 13 OOS and 7 IS interviewees who were deferred by December, and they offered 2-5 acceptances to each group on Friday, December 20: https://twitter.com/UMichMedAdmiss/status/411474403273089024. It also seems like if you're deferred, you will either be waitlisted or accepted.

I'm in the same boat as you; I absolutely LOVED Michigan so the deferral really stung. But we're in a much better place than if we had been waitlisted or rejected.

Anyone know what the deal is with the deferral?

So if accepted, is there something we have to do to accept the acceptance or not?

PARTY. No, nothing to do, no money down. You have until May to withdraw. GO BLUE!!

Funny stories about my interviews and acceptance last year. I got emailed to interview on Dec 2 for January. I was planning a 5 week hiking trip in S. America, so called the admission office, and they scheduled me for an Alternate date on Dec 18. I'm thinking, cool, right in the middle of my final semester finals. Then on Wed, Dec 4, they said they had a cancellation for that Friday, Dec 6, could I do that. Yikes 2 day notice (but I'm an a U of M undergrad, no problem). Except the girl that canceled was named Jennifer, and I'm a Dude, so they kept calling for Jennifer (my last name). Was awkward to keep explaining I was a last minute substitute for another candidate, but my fellow candidates got a good laugh about it.

So, I'm was out of the country in January on the 15th when the announcements are due for my interview date, so my Mom was monitoring my email for me. She noticed an email from the U of M Director a day before the Ad Com announcement date that there was an "issue with my application, could I stop my his office". My Mom (who works at U of M too) emailed the director, explained I was out of the country, and could she "assist" with the issue. She then calls the Director, and asks does the issue have to do with an envelope? (She knows the U of M process, and that for U of M undergrads, they lure you to their office to hand you the acceptance letter envelope personally). The Director said yes, keep it under your hat. So, my Mom knew I got accepted a day before it was announced. She texted me the next day, which luckily I had reception for a few hours when I was able to charge my phone. She got to look at the video first, which I didn't see for a few days.

That is one way to beat the stress of waiting, just get out of the country!!

So I counted, there are 26 acceptances (counted based on memory, there could be more, but I doubt it) given out for the 9/26 date on which day 32 interviewed. That comes down to a 81.25% acceptance rate!!! Holy Moly! I actually felt that everyone on my day was pretty darn impressive, candid and sharp, I was wondering how UMich was going to differentiate and triage, it must have been hard.

Congrats too all the acceptances!!! Deferred decision until December so here's to believing. GO BLUE!!

From what I can tell, 9/15 had 33/36 accepted.

Hi Jennifer!

Congrats y'all!

They posted this on their FB site this morning. Y'all have some crazy stats....MCAT average of 37!??!?!?!! lol there goes my shot at an II. https://www.facebook.com/UniversityofMichiganMedicalSchool?fref=photo

Amazing

No worries, the mere mortal applicants come later in the cycle, and the averages will come down. Remember, they accept about 270 OOS candidates, as those candidate have multiple top 10 acceptances, so to get 85 to accept, they have to admit lots of OOS folks. However, my class has 177, and I think they shoot for 170, so we are overenrolled for the 2nd year. Not sure if they are changing anything this year to avoid an over enrollment for a third year.

Look at my stats for IS, I got in, but I did have a lot of service work, and a unique background. Cheers, keep the hope alive and GO BLUE!

Just got an email from the alumnus/doctor who interviewed me. Whether or not the school asked him to reach out and congratulate me with a thoughtful letter, it's a testament to how strong the pride and network of alumni is at Michigan. Such a personal feel 🙂. Falling more in love every second.

I was going to post similar sentiment. I got very personal and encouraging emails from both my student and faculty interviewers. Maybe they wrote to me because they receive instruction from the admin or maybe because I wrote to them afterwards, but the sincerity in the email was apparent and the honor of being given such attention was cherished.

I've been complete since the end of August and am DYING to hear back. Surely there are others like me just waiting patiently?!

I would drop everything to go to UM. GO BLUE!

Congrats to everyone who recently got in - very inspiring to read how amazing the interviews and acceptances are.

Wow! How will this affect acceptance %s for later interview dates?

I can only hope that a mere mortal like myself can follow in your footsteps. I'm IS as well with stats a little bit lower than yours. It would be an absolute dream to even interview at Michigan.

Has anyone received any interview invitations recently? I feel like it's been pretty quiet...

Patience, patience, I know - but I'm still checking my application status an embarrassingly high number of times each day.

UM is one of my dream/reaches. I am in state, with a 34 mcat, 3.86 gpa, 200+ hours of hospital volunteering, lots of shadowing, and lots of research with publications, and i have volunteered abroad etc. I am growing worried because I just want an interview. do you guys here on SDN think I can get an interview. please be honest.

These kind of questions are always almost impossible to answer. We are all anxious premeds as well and only look unto the admissions process from the outside. Adcom members only might be able to really give you a useful answer.

There are definitely people with stats like you, or lower, who get II's and acceptances and others who don't. Sure, you might have a shot!

No one can answer this definitively, unfortunately.

Their admissions tracker says that as of 10/14/14 they had made 410 interview offers out of a total of around 580 (MSAR 2014; keep in mind this number fluctuates year to year). So there's definitely still many IIs to be handed out, but I imagine that things will become increasingly selective as time goes on. As @daenschl said, people with stats lower than yours have gotten interviews, and there are people with higher stats who have been rejected. Keep in mind as well that this process is mysterious and to a certain extent maybe even a little arbitrary.

Keep your head up! It will all work out 🙂

Hey does anyone remember if Michigan requires you to buy any electronics or use an Ipad? THanks

It would be amazing to get into UofM. I have two interviews right now, and I'm waiting for them to come up next month. Neither one of them are for UofM. I fell in love with the program, and the available resources for students. I don't have the normals stats whatsoever. For me though, I would want to go to a program that valued me for making the program better with me being accepted, not accepted because they "cut me a break" or "gave me some slack". I have experiences just as the next students does; however, I want to be accepted to a program due to the fact that I'm intelligent, compassionate, empathetic, and will make a damn good physician. If I'm not a good fit for a program, it's usually not because one person thinks this. I'd rather matriculate to a program that is happy to have me, rather than matriculate at one that would scrutinize every step I took to ensure that I was a "good pick".

This is not to say that I believe UMMS would do this whatsoever. This is more specific to the previous posts on this page.

anyone interviewing this friday?

for those who have interviewed: any advice? what was your favorite part of your 24hrs in blue?

its hard to be nervous when im so excited! read so many great things about UMMS online and the people i know who go there only have the best things to say about the community. i can already say without a doubt this is one of my top choices. im really looking forward to officially visiting and seeing everything firsthand!

Status changed to "Application Screening Completed". I was under review since early July.

Hey, me too.

Application Screening Completed

Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview. Your file remains "open" and eligible for additional reviews. Final decisions for all candidates will be made the first week in February. Thank you for your patience.

I guess this is a hold that is more or less a rejection.

"Application Screening Completed" for me too 🙁 Bummer, would have loved to get an interview here. Still a chance I suppose, but it's looking ever more slim.

Also got the status of certain doom. Way to show a Canadian some love, Michigan. 🙁 I thought we were bros...

Good luck to all those still in the running!

+doom status

My dreams of weekly Savas brunches are slowly fading away.... But good luck to those spared!!

Sava's moved off campus anyway, but Angelo's isn't going anywhere...
No raisin bread for us 🙁

EDIT: Whoops, I lied, Seva was the one that moved. Anyway, I will still dream about Angelo's even if I'm not going to med school in Ann Arbor.
