2014-2015 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My status page just says "Application Screening Complete". At this point, I think this is a rejection, right? It says that they cannot offer me an interview at this time. I guess I'm out . . . Man, I'm getting absolutely no love from any school right now, and I don't even understand why. I guess I shouldn't have taken the MCAT in July; all my stuff went in late because of that. No point in getting a 39 if you can't get in anywhere . . . Probably should have taken it earlier and accepted that I was going to get a lower score. Time to apply for jobs now, I guess.

Anybody already accepted also receive a background check request?

I know folks who got several interviews after January. Chin up 🙂

Just got an II after being complete since July. I also got the screening complete status. There is still hope 🙂

I guess all the speculation on the possibility that late applicants tend to be lower in the average quality was true.

I feel the same way. I am currently applying to get a masters in public health. I wish the schools would at least tell us yes or no. I dislike the wait and not hearing back. I have felt so discouraged and disappointed but it's time to move on.

Yeah that one. I had a small bit of hope but it seemed like very few got an II after that

Awesome! I think a few others have posted reporting they got II with that status.

Meanwhile, I'm still patiently chillin' in "Under Review" land.

Hey quick question: Has anyone gotten anything to sign up to go to second look week?

nope not yet, just that first email about the dates back in december. they said "later next month" we'd get info, so im guessing in the next week or two? im sure between email & the fb group we wont miss it

Accepted! Thank you to all the people on here that answered my questions / gave me advice before my interview (you know who you are). For upcoming interviewees please PM me if you want to talk about the interview day. Best of luck! See everyone at second look in April.

Congrats! Through email or Status page?

New tracker is up.

II stats
162/165 IS
382/390 OOS

Admission stats
94/100 IS
209/250 OOS

Denominators changed a bit. Wonder if it's not final / things changed throughout the process?

Can't find it...? Can you post it? The tracker on the website still says updated 12/16/14

Does anyone know if Michigan is receptive to Letters of Intent pre-interview? I'm on the Screening Complete status and I know there aren't many II left, but I'm still wondering if it might help at all.

I'm guessing hearing no news today, post interview, is bad news :-(

IT'S A BLUE AND MAIZE KINDA DAY 🙂
Although, holy crap, the acceptance letter gave me a heart attack. Those of you accepted, you know what i mean...
SO SO excited for second look weekend, and congrats to everyone else receiving happy things in their inbox today.

1 question: does anybody know what the dates are for second look weekend?

Does anyone know when Dean's scholarships are typically announced? Has it already happened? For financial reasons, without a merit scholarship, I'll probably need to withdraw from Michigan in lieu of someplace closer to home.

According to their twitter, they "started to identify potential candidates" 12 days ago. I would imagine that, even though UMMS Admissions moves very quickly and transparently, we still have a few weeks to wait before finding out final verdicts. Sorry I can't be of more help!

To be fair, even if they don't announce scholarship recipients until mid-April, you can still hold on to your acceptance until the bitter end (April 30th?).

Good points. Although I'd assume that they'll wait until Feb when they can see where else accepted students are holding seats. There are only 10 of them, I won't keep my hopes up at all.

Only 3 more IS interviews left? I think my Michigan dreams have officially been crushed. I knew there wasn't much hope, but now it's basically official 🙁

rejected pre interview today. So sad. Good luck to those still in the run.

Did you actually get a rejection status or just the screening complete status?

I've had "File Complete - Under Review" since mid-Aug.

Got the rejection email this morning. Status is now "FILE CLOSED."

Strange that we haven't basically all gotten rejection emails now, in that case. Seems like they're basically done giving IIs.

I agree.

If I were to overthink this a bit and take it personally, getting the email at 7am this morning means one of two things:

1) I was near the cutoff for interview candidates, but didn't make the cut. I was a fresh file on top of someone's desk and therefore near the top of the list to formally reject ASAP as a courtesy.

2) They've wanted to reject me for a long time, so I was one of the first few in line.

Overall, I'm incredibly saddened and hope that those who were accepted truly appreciate the opportunity and have a wonderful time in AA. UM docs (and nurses) are truly amazing and highly regarded all over the world. The hospital facilities and campus buildings are gorgeous. Everything you need is at your fingertips, you've just gotta ask. *sigh*

Well said.I know how much it has to do with luck that I got in from the big pool full of amazing applicants and how precious the opportunity it is to study at UM, I'm sure most of those who got accepted felt the same way. You being rejected at this stage in no way reflects badly on your ability and your gracious altitude will carry you far wherever you go. Best wishes!

Anyone who interviewed recently remember the date when merit/recruitment scholarships would be issued?

I really second FriendlyFH's notion that many of us who got accepted (I know a significant number of current students) are seriously shocked that we were accepted…please don't let an interview or lack of interview invite make you think any different about yourself 🙂

Anyhow-- to those generous souls who are willing to give an anxious pre-meder some advice--, I was looking into housing at U of M and was wondering if anyone could tell me what a breakdown of a student's schedule is (in terms of required courses) in terms of the first year? I plan to live a few miles off campus and am thinking about using a specific shuttle to get to/fro campus; I just want to know what time I can reasonably expect to be done everyday so I can make that shuttle! Super thanks in advance! [[[and I plan to have a car as a back up too in case days ever go late!]]]

A friend told me it is usually the last week of March or first week of April, but that isn't concrete. Just what I have heard.

Most lectures are recorded, no need to attend class. Some labs are required. Tests every week, but between Friday 5PM - Sunday 11PM, at your convenience (on campus though). Some Required attendence classes, but not that many, but at random days/times.

Campus Buses and Public Bus systems are very good, so you shouldn't sweat it. I use UBER all the time when in a pinch. Very bike friendly town, when the weather is nicer. For a car, parking is a HUGE pain on campus, but lots of folks buy a $50/month parking pass from students living the in the white coat apartments that don't have a car. Best wishes to you and GO BLUE!
