2014-2015 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've only heard second hand of people getting accepted to UMD in the past week, but I'm still waiting for a callback or email myself

Anyone receive the acceptance package by snail mail yet? So far I've just gotten the emails

Did you guys get a confirmation email for your LOI? I emailed mine, and said I can mail it if they need a hard copy, but I haven't heard anything back...

Ditto ... Also Overanxious we interviewed here on the same day!
What? Seriously! That's so exciting...i met so many great people that day! Also, it looks like we have interviewed at many of the same places. I'm sooooo curious which one you were!

@AgentHill I haven't received any confirmation but from my experience with them it may take a while 😉 (just like the confirmation for the II). However, i will definitely be calling them by this Friday which would be the 2 week mark just to make sure i've secured my seat.

I'm flying in 11/16 in the PM for my interview on 11/17. Flying out afternoon of 11/18. I am staying at a hotel on campus. How far is the airport from the campus? Should I rent a car to drive to and from airport as well as to various areas of the city that I want to check out or?

I haven't actually seen anyone posting about Duluth, period. I hear that place is absurdly cold though. Truth?

I had an interview on 10/10 from Duluth. No word yet.. They meet once weekly on Wednesday, and said the earliest would be 4 weeks. So still crossing fingers.

I interviewed 10/2 and no word yet either. When I interviewed there two years ago, they took 2 months to get back to me. If they take that long again, I may die.

Hey guys I was just wondering how common it is to receive a rejection after an interview at this stage in the cycle? Or is it usually just accepted or wait-listed?

Also just interviewed on the 24th and already feeling anxious! :xf:

@Overanxious: Thanks! Let me know what you hear! My application portal is showing that I paid the deposit...at least they have my money?
I called this morning as I was getting a bit nervous that they hadn't received the LOI yet. The woman i spoke with said she'd be emailing confirmations out next week but she had them.

Thank you! Good to know it's just normal U of M administrative delays (I work here too, so I'm quite acquainted with the wait times).

Can someone that has interviewed this cycle please re-address the structure of interview day and the interview itself?

Interview day goes like this:

8-8:20 Check In/Welcome from Dean
8:30-11:45 Mix of two interview or three presentations; they alternate these so you have a break between interviews
11:50-1 Lunch with students – try to ask questions or else it gets awkwardly quiet
1-1:45 tour
1:50-2:10 Financial Aid presentation
2:15-2:45 Med device tour
2:45 -3 closing

The interview itself is with either a MS4, retired physician or faculty member. I had a MS4 and retired physician and I got the impression everyone had at least one faculty or retired physician interview. Both interviews are very relaxed and both used a set of questions to help guide them through the interview, but by no means were they strict to the script(I ended up talking about Ebola for ten minutes with my MS4 interview). The questions are pretty standard and if you look online at what MN is looking for on their website none of the questions are very surprising. I liked that the interviews were in the morning which allowed everyone to relax and open up more later on. My advice during the interview is don’t be afraid to ask for a moment to come up with an answer. The dean encouraged this at the welcome and I think it really helped me not just say the first thing that popped in my head for a few questions.

Thanks for the advice. I am an OOS who is very much from outside the region, I'm from the south, and I am extremely excited about the opportunity to interview at Minnesota-TC. Do you know what sort of #s are typical for the number of II for OOS compared to the number accepted? Is it a situation where they bring in tons of OOS candidates and accept just a few or a situation where they have already vetted their interviewees quite well and have a decent # of them actually accepted?

According to the MSAR, last year they received 3335 OOS applications, interviewed 266, and 35 matriculated.

Yeah unfortunately matriculated doesn't tell me much. They could have accepted many more than that but most chose to attend elsewhere. In any case, I'm very excited about the interview and the prospect of going to school there.

Data from 2012-2013 application cycle taken from admissions website:
• 3826 Primary Pool
• 2133 Supplemental Pool
• 646 Interviews
• 62% of applicants who interviewed for 2013 had a 32 or greater MCAT score
• 60% had a 3.7 CUM GPA or higher
• 272 Offers
• 160 MD Matriculates
Supplemental Completed Pool
30% MN
70% Non Resident
Interviewed Pool
65% MN
35% Non Resident
Accepted Pool
70% MN
30% Non Resident
Matriculated Pool
82% MN
18% Non Resident

So for the 2012-2013 they interviewed roughly 226 OOS applicants with 82 receiving acceptance offers. That means as an OOS you have roughly a 36% chance of getting an offer. In comparison, IS interviewees had a roughly 190/420 or 45% interviewees of receiving an acceptance offer.

I know the admissions committee meets every other week, but do they review applications by the day you interviewed? For example, has anyone been accepted at TC that interviewed in October yet?

Does anybody know if the interviews are closed or open file (or even something else)? Thanks to everyone for all the helpful information!

Have there been any IS IIs lately? If so, could you please say when you were complete/stats? Thank you!

Thanks for the comprehensiveness of your response. I now have a very clear understanding of the numbers.

Just got my supplemental today, was honestly surprised that they even bothered this far in. I'm an ND resident with my parents owning a house in MN...hoping that's a "tie" to the state cause I'm dying to go here!

When did you submit your primary? I got mine last week, and I submitted late October. OOS
