2014-2015 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Received a Duluth email yesterday saying I'm in the "acceptable" category, essentially wait listed.

Anyone know if at such an early point, that means most likely will end in denied?

Any insight would be great!

Has anyone who has been accepted to the Twin Cities received anything at all in the mail yet? I got the email confirming my declaration of intent, but haven't received anything in the mail and I got the impression (from Dean Patel's call) that we should be receiving something in the mail?

Nothing for me; I have the confirmation email and the portal confirms I've paid, but no physical paper. I'm guessing there won't be much more communication until financial aid stuff starts/they want more money from us.

I'm coming to interview on the 17th and it looks like it's going to be super cold. Suggestions on attire?

Sadly 30 degrees isn't "super cold" for Minnesota. That's like a pleasant winter day here. I would suggest a nice wool pea coat for interview day. The interview is entirely inside though and if you drive you can take the tunnels from the parking lots.

Any more wait lists or acceptances? Been pretty quiet on that front for a while...

Does anyone know the exact date when the Admissions committee last met? Guessing by the acceptance calls received (around Monday, Nov 3), would it be Wednesday (Oct 29)? Thanks!

If they meet every other Weds, Oct 29th seems right to me. They should be meeting this coming week.

Actually the forecast on my interview day is hi of 14 low of -2. Is that an aberration?

No. That is actually pretty normal for this time of the year. I wouldn't worry too much about it since you will be indoors for the entire day.

The average high for November is 41 degrees and the average low is 26, so I would say yes, that is colder than average. That is not uncommon throughout December or January, but it is colder than normal for November.
41 to 26 sounds doable. I'm interested in visiting a museum while there. Do you have a favorite? Any recommendations on food?

I like the Walker myself. They usually have a good show going on, and you can see to the sculpture garden because it's right there. As to weather, I wouldn't agree that anything in the low teens was normal until closer to Christmas. But there are two things to remember: dressing for the weather in MN is definitely function over fashion. The only people that look stupid are those who are freezing! In addition to a coat - pea or otherwise - I almost always have gloves and earmuffs with me because I find if ears and hands are warm, you're good But for interview day, it is true that you can get almost anywhere at the U via underground tunnels. They aren't called the Gophers for nothing!

Weather update: it is currently 29, we've had several inches of snow, and the precipitation has turned into ice pellets.

@Jumanji2015 : Bring boots if you're planning on doing a lot of walking.

In your online portal, is there also a green check mark next to the letter of recommendation tab? Or does it just say X/X letters have been received? I want to make sure that my app is actually under review.

Thanks!

No green check by the LoR, if I'm not mistaken. I had the same question earlier. Received an II not long after. Hope this helps! Good luck!

What sort of boots specifically? Rubber boots? Red wing style? Clarks?

You want something weatherproof; in my opinion, basically anything will work as long as it's warm enough. If you're wearing leather boots then invest in some weatherproofing spray (something that will protect from water) so they don't get destroyed by slush and salt.

Thanks for the sage advice. I suppose it won't matter if I apply the weatherproof spray to a pair I've been wearing for close to a year but haven't weather proofed yet? Also, I have been told that uptown is a great place to hang out in the evening after the interview. Do you agree, do you have any suggestions of where to go/what to do there or somewhere else?

Uptown has always been one of my favorite places to go out, however, it's not THAT close to campus. Moto-i is amazing for happy hour if you like sake and Asian street food. Kiku Bistro has some of the best sushi and happy hour drinks. Otherwise Uptown Tavern and Williams are good for Friday and Saturday night festivities. If you want to stay closer to campus Northeast is always a safe bet. Bauhaus Brew Labs is a new brewery that is always fun to hang out and have a beer at. And of course there is always Dinky Town. Have fun!

Loving this conversation...I'm all too familiar with the weather too and was just looking for new winter boots today 😛

I am an out of state applicant from oklahoma Who has an interview tomorrow. My flight was cancelled due to weather. I was unable to get another flight til tomorrow and so I won't be able to make my interview. Super bummed. I emailed the school via the mdtcintv email address and also called and left a voice message at admissions explaining the situation. Surely this has happened before to an applicant right? Does anyone know how difficult it will be for the school to reachedule me and how interviewing later than tomorrow will affect my chances for admission? Thanks for reading and to whomever responds.

Despondent applicant

Can you get on a bus?

That stinks, but you're right, it can't be the first time this has happened.

I can tell you no one in admissions is there right now.

I would just call in the morning to triple check that they know you are not coming. Minnesota is no stranger to bad winter weather canceling flights.

Oh I didn't imagine anyone would be. I sent the email and left the message just to make sure they had the earliest possible notice. And I looked into getting a bus from okc to Minneapolis and it wouldn't get there until tomorrow afternoon. Okc is pretty far from Minneapolis and I guess they make a lot of stops. The only other flight I found for late tonight was 1000 dollars. Crazy.

Thanks, yes I plan to call around 715 or 7 30 am to let make sure they know and to inform them how much I wanted to be there. I've been excited about this since I got notified on October 1. I'd honestly rather go to Minnesota than anywhere else, including my in state alma mater. I hope they will be understanding

What can I do around campus after the interview? I want to get a feel for the community etc. around town; only have a weekend. What should I check out?

I was waitlisted at Duluth 2 years ago and was placed in the acceptable category (didn't end up getting in). They also sent a letter in the spring saying they made a high priority waitlist and a regular waitlist, since they interviewed a lot more people than usual. Since it is such a small school, I don't think they have much movement off of the waitlist unfortunately.

waitlist.. IS LizzyM 73-74. 🙁 They say waitlist but really it's more like deferred before they tell you youre accepted, ranked alternative or rejected. Im also assuming they won't even accept a letter of interest because they said the file is reviewed and no additional materials will be accepted. kinda shocked to be honest; thought it had gone well.

Keep your chin up. Don't let it make you feel like they didn't like you. Most likely it's them not you. From what i've gathered so far "going well" seems to play no role in acceptance anywhere! I say this because i've had interviews at two schools that after the day was over i left truly mortified or outraged by how they had gone. Acceptances at both... Furthermore, a speedy (like 2 weeks or less) rejection from an interview i thought went well. There is just no way to predict an acceptance based on the interview IMHO.

Similar experience. IS, 35, 3.95+.

Interviewed early September, Wait-listed 10/15
Thanks for the info! I interviewed 10/6 and am still waiting to hear back.. IS, MCAT 31, sGPA 3.67, and total GPA 3.68. You're stats are good so makes me worried but its such a toss up. Anyways, I know more than a few people accepted off the waitlist so keep your chin up!

Just received the acceptance call from TC yesterday morning. I'm a non-traditional IS re-applicant, 3.24 GPA with a 33 MCAT, and I interviewed on 10/6. I also interviewed at Duluth on 9/15 and was accepted on 10/15. SDN has been an incredible resource for me over the past few years, so I'm happy to help out in any way that I can regarding questions about the interview day, re-application process, strengths/weaknesses of applications - anything really. I've literally been through the ringer over the last 4 years and I'm happy to help those who are in a similar situation to what I've experienced, it has been an enormous challenge. Feel free to send a private message or post directly on here. Best of luck to those that are still grinding through the application cycle!

I'm not seeing a page for Duluth, so I'll start a separate facebook group as well. Look for Class of 2019 University of Minnesota-Duluth Medical School.

Hi! Non-traditional older student (34 yo male... ignore my sn... my wife initially created the account) here. In-state. MCAT: 30 sGPA: 3.6. Varified mid-september. Received secondary from MN-TC early November and completed within 1 week. Anyone else on a similar timeline. Thoughts on my chances. Thanks! Good luck everyone!

My friend completed his secondary mid-October and was rejected today. Minnesota does not shy away from older non-traditional students as I know they have had several students in their 30s and 40s. I think the biggest thing working against you is applying later in the cycle. I imagine any possible interview invite would be for January or February.

I was complete at TC on 11/2 and have not heard anything yet.

If you applied to Duluth they seem to be a bit quicker... I was complete on 10/20 and interviewed on 11/14.

I was rejected by Duluth long before I received the TC secondary.

ORM Minnesota resident with 3.72 gpa/29 MCAT. submitted the secondary in late september and heard nothing since. hoping to hear some good news soon. Does anyone know if the adcom is receptive to LOI's?
