2014-2015 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ORM Minnesota resident with 3.72 gpa/29 MCAT. submitted the secondary in late september and heard nothing since. hoping to hear some good news soon. Does anyone know if the adcom is receptive to LOI's?

Bump. I'm interested as well in knowing about LOI before interview invites. I'm a similar time frame as you and have not heard anything yet as well. MN is my #1 choice and I would be willing to write the mooshiest love letter, I mean LOI, to them!

Got the call from TC this morning! IS. Interviewed 10/13. Below average stats, but great ECs including medical experience, leadership, working with under-served in rural and urban settings, and diversity experience. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back!
congratulations!!

So on my interview day they told us that in order to receive an interview your application had to first get the "thumbs up" from two people on the admissions committee. If you got one "thumbs up" and "one thumbs down" your application went to a third member who gave the final decision. So in essence your application may only be viewed by up to three people pre-interview. The post-interview decision making process was more complicated.

As for LOI, I'm not really sure if they are helpful since the secondary left an open ended question at the end to say essentially whatever you thought would be helpful. There is also the argument that if you applied and completed the secondary you have already indicated your intent to that school. I heard no indication that they are added to your file, but also did not hear they are ignored. If it makes you feel better go for it, but I wouldn't count on it having any real impact. I remember looking at past threads and it appeared that post-interview LOI's or updates were definitely not considered.

@kevinsword91 : Do you know what the post-interview decision making process is at the TC campus? Thanks!
I'm not who you asked, but I do remember the info! Post interview, it's very similar to pre interview. Your two interviewers have I think three days to fill out a form summarizing their impressions and your interview. This gets filed with your entire application and sent to the committee for review. Two different members of the committee (not the people who read initially) read your app. If they both thumbs, you're presented to the committee with little discussion and probably accepted. Thumbs up and thumbs down means more extensive discussion with the committee as a whole. Two thumbs down is probably rejection or waitlist (they didn't mention what happens then).

The committee meets every other week on Wednesdays (I think). They tell you 6 to 8 weeks, but I've heard of it taking ten especially later in the cycle.

Thank you for all this information! There is a comfort in knowing what goes on behind the scenes.

As for the LOI, I don't mean to be confrontational, but one of my interviewers said that, without question, I should send an LOI post-interview. Just more input for all you SDNers. Good luck all!

Good to know! I was just repeating what I saw on last year's MN forum which upon further investigation was for applicants already placed on the waitlist. Based on what you have stated, it seems like LOI's may at least have some influence before a decision is made on one's application.

me too 🙂 soooooo going to be a doctor!!
Congrats!! This is slightly embarrassing but do you remember what the next steps are? Should we expect an email or snail mail? I was so excited I wasn't paying attention to what she was saying 🙂

I think she said we should expect an email. Nothing else to be done before that.

You'll get an email sometime next week; you'll be able to submit your deposit and the letter of intent after that.

rejected today. incredibly disappointed in myself for not have even gotten an II 🙁. Pretty sure this was my best shot out of all the schools I applied to. Good luck and congrats to everyone else though.

Hang in there! I do understand how incredibly harrowing this whole experience is! But there's still some time before the process is over. Don't give up hope.
Easier said of course - but hang in there!

Sorry to hear but don't worry. I thought that some of my schools that I've been rejected at were better fits than the top schools I have surprise iis from. This process is so weird! Hopefully other schools are going better for you!

Accepted last friday morning!!!!! IS interviewed October 24th. Any idea on when we should be expecting an email with instructions? I also kinda tuned out after I heard I was in and missed what she told me haha

Dimple said it should be within the next couple of days (I got the call Tuesday last week), and I'm still impatiently waiting lol. Seems like they had quite a few acceptances last week so maybe they'll send out the emails all together. Anyone else care to share how long it took them to receive the email after their call?

I just got the email maybe 5 seconds after I posted that reply. So if you didn't receive your email today, it took me a little less than a week @kingjames3107

Also got the call this morning. IS. Interviewed mid november!

First of all congrats to you and everyone else on the acceptances!!! Would you mind sharing exactly when you interviewed ( just so we can get a sense of how far up they have gotten)? Thank you so much and congrats again!!!!

Interview Invite just now!! International. Complete September 23rd. Lizzy M~69. Dates offered were January 12th,16th, and 23rd.

Has anyone heard anything that completed early November?

For everyone else, about how long did it take after secondaries to get interview invites or rejections? Thanks

I was complete 8/7, received an interview invite mid-September. Since it's a little later in the cycle, they MAY take longer/less time depending on how many applications they have and where they are in reviewing them.

I was complete 9/3 and haven't heard anything yet :/ it's taking sooooo long!

I'm not seeing a page for Duluth, so I'll start a separate facebook group as well. Look for Class of 2019 University of Minnesota-Duluth Medical School.
For anyone who had trouble findings the groups (or maybe it's just me) you need to search specifically for groups with the "more" tab!

Got a II today!
Most of the dates are for January as others have listed above.
Does anyone have any hotel recommendations? As well as what to do if I stay for an extra day on the weekend?

Anxious to get a decision after my interview in late Nov. Some have gotten a response from 11/14, so looks like it's coming soon. Hopefully they don't have us wait until mid Jan to hear back. Super excited about this school!

Stay downtown--lots to do after the interview(if you have time after the interview) and public transportation (train) is super easy to use to get to the school in the AM. If you are only there for the interview date then stay in the hotel near campus, it's super nice and will shuttle you to the interview.
Hope it helps.

Is the hotel near the school "the commons"?

II today!! OOS, LizzyM 64, Complete 9/14, strong EC's and UMN alum.

The Commons hotel (formerly the Radisson) is just a couple blocks from the med school and a short fun walk.

I'm in the process of preparing for my II tomorrow. For those who interviewed, how did it go? Are the interviews generally conversational or more heated? I'm OOS, complete 8/29.

They have a set list of questions that they need to ask but it is overall very conversational. Nothing to be worried about. Look at the SDN interview feedback and you will be fine.

Interview day is really relaxed and the admission staff are incredibly nice. RELAX. My interviews were very conversational, but there are some scripted questions. Know your application well, be yourself, and you should do fine.

As a side note, they feed you lunch and later we had some hummus and pita bread. The afternoon snack was a very nice touch.
