2014-2015 University of Southern California (Keck) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OOS ii just now. LizzyM of 71. Mediocre ECs, so I'm in absolute shock. I had a couple of absurd answers for the secondary questions completely unrelated to medicine, and I think that played a big part in getting an ii. Scheduled for earliest date...mid-January...hope it's not too late. Can't wait to to visit the west coast for the first time.

Congrats! Do you really think it was your secondary answers that got you a II? Surely there were other parts of your application they were impressed by?

Anyone heard anything post interview?

Yes, I meant WLs.

Anyway, WL today, interviewed in early September.

Also wait listed. Not the ideal first response I've received post interview lol. Unfortunately for us I think I remember the dean saying that nobody was taken off the wait list last year....so I won't be holding my breath. Wish they had waited until the 15th.....hearing back from a couple more schools on the 15th and 16th and far more paranoid now.

For those that got WL, how did you think your interview went? I wish I had not checked this thread....I'm on pins and needles now.

I thought my interviews went well, but I suppose not lol. I am out of state if that makes any difference. 3.99/41 for stats. But I guess if you aren't wait listed today then you are accepted! So congrats.

Right? Now I'm paranoid and checking my email constantly...

Oh crap! So sorry to hear. I also interviewed early September. Did they email you?

Yup, email.

I thought my interviews went fine. I didn't feel like I blew them out of the water, but que sera sera. I am IS, ~70 LizzyM.

I'm pretty sure stats matter much less for USC post-interview, but with those stats I'm sure you will land some nice acceptances 🙂 I had one interview go well and the other, not so much so I'm not expecting an acceptance at this point.

I also think the dean said that this year she definitely anticipates people being taken off the waitlist. I think it has only happened twice where no one came off (1 of the them being last year).

Holy cow – so sorry about the wait-lists. :,( It's still extremely early in the game, so I'm hoping plenty of love comes your way on the 15th.

Guess we just have to hold our breath and try and make it through the next day and a half. I won't lie, but I'm pretty nervous.

That's an understatement. I'm squinting and dreading each email that's coming in now. Next day and a half could be rough haha.

What's even more terrifying: the 15th may bring in waitlists in addition to acceptances. :scared: Hoping you get to excessively celebrate on Wednesday! :luck:

Seriously. I got an Apple support message and my heart started galloping when I saw the email alert. These next few days are not going to be easy...

Has anyone else been WL that interviewed in Oct.? Thanks and GL everyone!

I've been avoiding SDN since I got my MCAT score back in May ... really should've kept it that way. Any proof or reasoning that mid-Sept interview date + no waitlist email yet means acceptance? Or are you all just speculating at this point.

Nobody knows, it depends on the school.

Wait listed today via email. Interviewed late September. 70ish LizzyM. Knew this school was a reach, and I'm willing to admit one of my interviews did not go swimmingly. Dream school, but happy to have had a shot with an interview.

Best of luck fellas.

Noooo Hingle! 😢 I was rooting for you! At least hope is not lost yet... hopefully there'll be decent WL movement this year.

Good luck with Tulane tomorrow! :luck:

Accepted – holy guacamole... this was the best Taco Tuesday surprise ever (I see wot u did thur). Glad I didn't open the email at the bar or else I would have started to buy everyone margaritas.

So many feelings right now. Good luck to all those waiting and I send all my good vibes out to those on the waitlist! Hope good news finds its way to everyone this week.

Nothing about second look in the email, but if they have one you can bet it I'll be there.

Systems based.

Year 1: Core sciences, Skin, Hematology, MSK, Neuro
Year 2: Cardio, renal, pulmonary, endocrine, repro, GI/liver
Basically correct through the class of 2017, but the order is being rearranged to better match anatomy to first year systems. I think Heme, Skin, and MSK will be switched to second year and GI/liver and repro to first year.

Just got the acceptance letter! Read it over about five times before telling anyone in case I interpreted it wrong. 🙂

I don't comment much, but I read what you guys write regularly, and I am glad to be a part of this kind and helpful community.

Congratulations to everyone that got accepted! And good luck to everyone on the waitlist! I hope everything comes up positive!

So I wanted to share my thoughts on USC after interviewing there this week. I was pretty disappointed with the school which was really surprising as I thought that I would love it before going. First off, the med school campus is very small and feels very claustrophobic. Also, this feeling was compounded by how much of a commuter school it is. With all the students just driving in each day, it seems like you lose out pretty dramatically in terms of having a close student community. The huge upside to the school is obviously LAC+USC medical center which is an amazing clinical opportunity.

Perhaps unrelated to the school, my interviewer had a really hard time communicating clearly with me and I couldn't really understand the questions she asked. The closed file interview also made it difficult to discuss much of substance as the interviewers questions just seemed to rehash my CV.

Finally, the school didn't really try and sell itself at all so I left the interview day with basically just the same understanding of the program I had from the website.

Great weather and the students were nice but I guess I was a little bummed about the experience. It was just a big difference from my other interview days where I invariably fell in love with each school.

As always, please take this with a grain of salt as this is only n=1.

Okay - what questions can I answer to sell you on it? Some things are personal preference, but a few of us have addressed the positive aspects of the "commuter school" thing (I'd argue it's not fair to call it that, because of all those positives!). The small campus is great too - no undergrads studying in our library or stealing our study rooms, easy to be where you need to be on campus quickly. There are a lot of people on campus with all of the other health sciences program, so it certainly doesn't feel small. Also the campus is bigger than you realize when you take into account research buildings and the other hospitals besides County. We have a great student community, a point that is addressed by @Swartzlehman above.

The interviews aren't about your accomplishments, your CV, etc. As a student interviewer, I ask questions in order to have some conversation, because the goal of the interview is to assess personality and fit. The content of your CV and whatnot is less important...if you're interviewing in September or October (or at all really), I know the admissions committee finds your CV impressive already.

My experience is that schools' curricula run together after a couple interviews. Besides, the curriculum at your school will be what it will be, and I personally don't think it's a good thing to make a decision off of. Premeds aren't really in a position to assess what arrangement of the medical curriculum is best anyway. Better to focus on the things that matter day to day, like web-casted lectures (check!).

I hope that you asked questions of your interviewers and tour guides in order to determine what the school has to offer. It's such an amazing place to be a medical student, and like I mentioned, I'll be happy to sell you on it further if you tell me what was missing.

ACCEPTED!! IS 33 MCAT 3.6 GPA URM with published research, shadowing, lots clinical experience, work with underserved LGBT and Latino communities.

Does anyone know how strict they are with the five day deadline?? I'm sure they know the students they accept are competitive and waiting to hear from other schools this early in the cycle.

you know you're allowed to keep multiple acceptances for many more months, right? they are not asking you to forsake all others yet

Those of you accepted: would you mind putting an approximate date of when you interviewed? trying to gauge whether I might be getting an email soon or not

Accepted today. Interviewed 9/9

Interviewed 9/12.

I know this isn't the FAFSA forum but can I add the school code to my existing FAFSA app for 2014-2015 or do I need to wait until jan 1 to start a new one for 2015-2016?
