2014-2015 University of Texas Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the info. I'm hoping maybe they haven't gotten to my application yet. I submitted my primary and secondary after the dates you submitted yours.

Ladies, have any of you gone to Friday rounds? What to wear for rounds has me stumped. Can anyone shed a little light on the mystery?

Flats flats flats flats flats, unless you LOVE walking in heels for 8 hours. Mostly everyone wore their suit. Skirt or pants is up to you.

Has UTSW accepted anybody through the match at all in recent years?
When I interviewed, a student told me she had friends who had been accepted through the match and waitlist.

I just interviewed and I heard from a student that no one really gets in from the match. They said that UT gives out all of its spots with prematch offers. Then in early May when the national list comes out students finally decide between Southwestern and Baylor and students are admitted off of the waitlist. I hope there are spots available in the match but unfortunately her logic made sense to me.

Two of the students I met on my interview were accepted from the match. It does happen, it's just very, very uncommon.

Did anyone ask during interview day, considering the school is moving to full pre-clinical Pass/Fail, do they still keep an internal metric for progress towards AOA? That sounds gunner-ish, but in my mind, one of the benefits (and better ranking on my match list) of UTSW is no grades, which isn't a real benefit if we still have a ranking based on how we do in pre-clinical years compared to our peers.

If I remember correctly, I believe one of the speakers at my interview said that they do approximately 2/3 from pre-match and the rest from the match then, of course, some off the waitlist.

So perhaps there's still hope?

No post in 2 weeks? Tomorrow morning is Match Day! Good luck everyone... I hope I get placed too!

I fear it is the wait list for most of us, but may the odds be ever in our favor :help:
Waitlist here! I guess. I don't see anything that actually says I'm on a wait list though. If we don't get into our #1 school, are we just on some assumed wait list and maybe we'll get an email sometime in the next few months?

Sorry - you did not match to any school.

UTSW sends rejection emails I think. Based on last year's thread, looks like they start sending them about a week after the match.

How many Texas schools did you interview at?
UTSW, UTMB, and Baylor. Another 21 out of state... however, only U. Colorado and Einstein College of Medicine have asked for interviews.... =\

did any oos peeps hear back from utsw? WHY ARE WE TREATED LIKE SCUM?!

No response besides acknowledging that they added my update email to my application. Sadly, I've given up hope even though UTSW was the best chance for me and my SO to finally be together after years of long distance. I'm pre-interview btw...not even past that stage, so I can't speak for OOSers who've already interviewed.

I don't understand how I got interviews at California public schools, but not Texas, despite being OOS for both. I'll never understand the med school application process. Frankly I'd rather put it behind me while I go to the schools that loved me enough to pick me, instead of wallow in regret.

does anyone know how the waitlist works? will they send emails out letting us know if we are placed on the waitlist and rejection emails to those who are not?

You have to realize that, by state law, Texas public schools can only have between 20 and 24 spots for OOS students per class (10% of the class size), and there is no minimum. That means they probably only interview between 50 and 100 OOS students each per year (I'm only guessing here). It really is nothing against any one applicant, there are just so few spots not everyone can be interviewed, no matter the strength of the application. But I'm glad to hear you've gotten love from other schools, good luck!

Is someone gonna make a class thread orrrrr???? Lol

If no one got rejected today, then I think it is pretty safe to assume that everyone was just put on the alternate list.

The email from Anne was nice to get, but I assumed I was on some sort of wait list a couple of months after my interview when I didn't get an acceptance (I'm OOS).

I know it varies from year to year, but does anyone know how WL movement generally looks for UTSW?

Thanks,
Bill

Waitlisted also. That wasn't a surprise with a January 17th interview. I do know they rejected some people last year who were not placed on the alternate list. We can expect some movement in May, if I'm not mistaken.

Are interviews done here? I never expected to not hear from this school.

Pre-interview rejection today. OOS. GPA 3.9. MCAT 33. This was my top choice at one point, so I thought that I would be more upset. But this cycle has been good to me, so I can't complain! 🙂 Good luck to everyone else!!

Does anyone really understand how the waitlist works if it's not ranked? Also does anyone know if UTSW accepts only the amount of students they have spots for (i.e. 230)? I know some schools accept more students than they have slots because they know many will go to a different school?

Spoke with an associate dean last week. Post interview GPA and MCAT are not weighed much on the waitlist. It is actually ranked but more of a points system with heavy weight on interview and other factors.

Do you know the "other factors"?

Unfortunately I got a sigh when I kept digging for info so I toned it down. But I think they take another look at personal statement, ECs and research. Really just what else sets you apart. Bottom line I guess is that the whole "not ranked" thing is false.

This isn't to say grades mean absolutely nothing but I think they kind of take the stance that "we wouldn't interview you if we didn't think you'd make it," which is the whole purpose of looking at scores.

I got an interview here as an OOS applicant, but not at Harvard. You got an interview at Harvard but not here. I wouldn't be too bummed out if I were in your position. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Haha, yeah I cannot be too bummed out. It's just so strange. There is no such thing as a shoe-in in this process and I was told that from the beginning. I knew I wanted to leave Texas but I never thought I would never even have the option to stay in Dallas if I wanted. This reject from UT Southwestern was just another humbling moment in this entire process. Good luck to you!

Are Yall worried about being guinea pigs for the new curriculum? Or is it a minor concern?
