2014-2015 University of Utah Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got my financial aid award letter. Anyone else received it?

Edited to add: Mine is just a loan offer. Has anyone heard about any scholarships yet? Any idea when they will be awarded?

Just checked and I received my loan offer as well. My guess would be scholarships may take a little while for them to review them and award them, but that is just a complete guess 🙂

Edit: however, it doesn't look like we have to accept it right away so maybe we can wait and see if we do get any scholarships (I know they are pretty limited) and then accept our award?

Just checked my CIS thing too (which to me is a little bit confusing, so much text!) and had the loan offer as well, nothing else. I'll wait for any possible scholarship offers, and some other school offers as well before accepting.

I accepted mine because I talked to the financial aid office and accepting it is nonbinding. Good luck to all!

Can anyone from Salt Lake City share what might be the best areas to live in and rent an apartment near the UofU SoM?
The avenues are ideal. Easy busses, good neighborhoods, and close to downtown for good restaurants when a break is earned! 🙂

Quick Q. I know I can go in on Thursdays to meet with a financial aid lady but now that's a week away! Is it normal for the loan offer to be less than the cost of attendance? What contributes to that? Hypothetically if I don't receive any scholarships how do you make up that discrepancy? Private loans, family etc?

You automatically get the Fedloan for 40,500 I believe and then if you need more, you can take out a GradPlus loan to make up the difference. You may get scholarships as well.

Just a note, the walk-in financial aid appointments WILL NOT be happening this coming Thursday the 23rd. Just FYI. Also, I talked with the admissions office about possible scholarships and they said that scholarships usually run $1000 or a couple of $1000, but nothing more.

Ditto to everything everyone said, just wanted to reiterate that you do indeed get the first chunk from the standard loans and then the rest with grad plus

Excited to see you all at Second look day, should be a fun experience for everyone!

So, I thought you guys might like to see what we (1st years) did for the annual roast video, we have some amazing talented people at the U!! Trust me, it's worth watching

It's April 30, aka the deadline day- I'm pretty surprised no one on SDN has been accepted off of the wait list here recently

Hey, guys! Is the UUSOM Class of 2019 Facebook page searchable for anyone? I can't seem to find it!

I think that you have to be added to it as it is a private group. Email Dr. Chan to ask, I believe he is in charge of the group (at least he was last year)

Some schools let applicants know at the end of May where they are on the wait list- does anyone know if Utah does this at any point?

It might be different now but I know they didn't last year...

Per the School of Medicine admissions webpage under FAQs:

"I am on the alternate list; can I call and get an update?

Your rank is confidential and will not be released. Applicants are accepted from the alternate list in the order that the Admissions Committee ranked them. Your rank is secure throughout the admissions process."

Welllll...

Just received some closure from Utah today:

"The University of Utah School of Medicine is nearing the end of the 2015 application cycle. Unfortunately, I am writing to inform you that the Admissions Committee is no longer actively considering your application for admittance to our school..." Followed by the generic "don't give up, keep working at it" sentiment.

Dumped by Utah. Two years running. She led me on both times with false hope on the waitlist for a few months. Oh well. I wish you all the best this next year; one of my big regrets is that I won't get to be classmates with any of you, some of whom I got to know and like on assessment day, and others whom I became friends with through this forum. Good luck on your respective paths! So long 2014 Utah thread!

Hey man no worries, it's a rough process and a bit of a crapshoot! I was hoping this would be your year 🙁 ! Did you get in somewhere else (if you don't mind me asking)

I'm so sorry @Ginred my friend! I'm still always rooting for you! All the best and I hope to see you around.

Did anyone else on the waitlist get this email? I didn't

Yes, sorry I didn't post earlier. I also got the rejection off the alternate list email on Friday. I was in state so if you're still on the in state alternate list, that might be a good sign that you're high on the list. Good luck to all of you. And sorry to hear that @Ginred- you were a great contributer to this thread. I've appreciated reading yours and everyone else's posts all year. All good feelings towards the U and best of luck to those still waiting!

Nowhere yet, I'm currently wait listed at the University of Miami (Florida)- I'll let you guys all know when (not if!) I get the acceptance phone call from them! 🙂

Thanks good sir, I've appreciated your friendship and support! Maybe I'll see you in residency, or in practice down the road!

Rejected yesterday. Pretty bummed, but here's to a more successful 2016 cycle!
