2014-2015 University of Vermont Application Thread

Has anyone gotten a secondary who isn't instate or early decision?

I like the Robert Frost intro, it gives me some additional insight and structure as to how I'm going to approach this thing!

Has anyone noticed the discrepancy between the stated "300 words maximum" and the 1000 character limit provided by the box in both essays?

So is the limit actually 1,000 characters (since I won't write a 1,000 character essay with even close to 300 words....)?

+1

Also, is this the only essay for this application, or are there others in addition to this?

I got an email for a secondary, however, when I follow the link and log in, there is no place for me to fill out an application. I am a reapplicant, if that matters.

I'm a first time OOS applicant. I got an email linking me to their secondary application but after I made an account, it just said that they will be emailing us over the next few weeks on how to access the secondary. Is it just me or does it seem that they're sending a secondary really late?

I actually just called and as I was on the phone with them, I tried it again and it works now. Also, this about when they sent it out last year.

On another note, If we have a letter packet, do we still designate the different letters in the packet?

I'm confused. They emailed me this:

Thank you for applying to the University of Vermont College of Medicine.

Below, is a link that you may use to access our supplemental application (please click or paste this link into your browser window):

---
but logging into my account, I was met with this:

We have received word from AMCAS that you have selected to apply to the University of Vermont College of Medicine and are pleased that UVM is among your medical school choices.

We will be emailing you instructions on how to access our online supplemental application over the next few weeks.

...... So I didn't get a secondary?

+1 got the same thing, appears to just be an account setup email. No secondary as of yet.

I'd love to go here but that OOS tuition is killer 🙁

Nope, look at the post right above. Everyone got the same message and it fixed itself within a few minutes.
My b, thanks for correcting me.

If we have a committee letter packet, do we still need to list the names of the recommenders?

Just got this secondary, OOS

There seems to be an awful lot of space for the course comments, what would you put here besides if it was an honors class?

I'm at 250 words but 1500 characters. Seems like characters is the thing to go by

Can anyone with MSAR confirm what their 10th percentile for the mcat is, I'd really appreciate it 🙂

I'm probably overthinking this, but does anyone else think that there are "better" answers to the why we chose to apply question? I'm really attracted to the location, but also the reputation of the school and other things about it. Do you think it looks "worse" to say that my primary interest is location? I have legitimate reasons why I'm attracted like wanting to go back closer to where I grew up, wanting to be in a small city close to nature, but I'm worried that it'll come off like I just want to ski... would I be better off selecting one of the other drop-down options? There isn't a place to explain.

I honestly think you're reading too much into it. That being said, I suppose you could use the 'additional comments' section for your reasoning. I chose reputation and did not explain my reasoning.

Did anyone contact Admissions to determine the actual word count on the short answer essay? I sadly pre-wrote a 300 word response over the weekend haha.

The boxes in the secondary will only allow 1000 characters.

FYI-- just spoke to someone in admissions and they will be changing word count to 1000 characters maximum as opposed to the 300 word max they stated on the prompt!

In the help section on the secondary, there's a part describing what to put for the "Why do you want to apply to UVM?" question. Is this, like, an optional prompt for the "additional comments" section, or is it referring to a section that's not on the current application?

No. For some reason that links to the 2010-11 app instructions?

Opinions for the prompt about failure on writing about a tutoree I helped who still ended up failing out if school and how it made me accept bad outoutcomes occur even when your trying to help someone? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Also, is there a "submit" button somewhere? Even after I've paid, I can still go back and change the application.

I'm taking a gap year so would it be a good idea to explain what I'll be doing in my gap year in the additional information section? Or would it be better to write a 'Why UVM' essay?

Secondary received- yay? Haha we will all be done with these soon enough!

I'm sending individual letters. On their site they say that if I choose this option I can add 3 additional letters on top of the "individual letter requirement" (2 science professors + 1 non-science professor). But the supplemental has space for only 4 letter writers. Does anybody know if I can send in 4 or 6 total letters?

I dont think so, I know you can email them for waivers if you want to include others

Speeding tickets? Really.

I know I have two but I have no idea how fast I was going and in what type of zone.

I was wondering this too, I think I will write about my gap year. Both are good options!

I included a short course description from my undergrad course catalog.. not sure what else there really is to say, I thought this was strange too
