Why are you interested in attending the University of Virginia School of Medicine? What factors will be most important to you in choosing a medical school?

How will you contribute to the diversity of your medical school class and the University of Virginia School of Medicine?

Describe a situation which you found challenging. How did you manage it?

All are limited to 350 Words.

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

UVA I'll be patiently waiting to hear from you for the next few months:corny:

Just read about this "The process begins with the submission of a primary application through AMCAS, which generates an automatic e-mail with a link to the UVA supplemental application."

Not much love for UVA? I'm OOS but an undergrad here and I love it!

Secondary submitted! Fingers crossed, hopefully this school is kind to Canadians!

Received this morning, submitted just now! Wishing everyone the best!

Submitted! Went to Undergrad here! Hoping for some love from TJ!

Hi everyone, upcoming second year at UVA here. I just wanted to wish you all the best of luck on your applications. I'll check this thread periodically; feel free to ask me any questions that you think I might be qualified to answer. 🙂

Just received the first II from UVA! 🙂
Hey hizziaips, do you have any tips/suggestions for interview at UVA? Is there public transportation from UVA to CHO airport?

Just saw that they require 90 credit hours at the time of application and I will be completing my 90th credit by August. I hope it is not a problem but it seems like it will be :/

It really shouldn't be. I would just shoot them an email just to preempt anything. Your promptness in turning in materials (now vs. after your 90th) shouldn't negatively affect you.

They want to make sure you're in place to get your degree before matriculation. You are, so don't worry about it.

Ok thank you!

Thanks! I will probably give them a call on Monday. They haven't sent me an email and I've been complete about a week so I hope that is a good sign.

I e-mailed them (I go to UVA too) and they didn't seem very concerned!

Congrats on the interview!

In the past, they've brought in 6-8 interviewees per day. You'll have an info session in the morning, a great lunch followed by a tour, and two interviews in the afternoon. The day ends with an optional financial aid session. Both of my interviews were really pleasant conversations with a member of the ADCOM (one was with a physician, and the other was with a 4th year medical student). All in all, I found it to be about as relaxed as a medical school interview can be.

Hey all. I'm also a current UVA student, 4th year, and happy to answer questions as best I can.

for those who got interviews, when did you get verified/when did you submit the secondary?

Can you comment on the cost of living and quality of life in Charlottesville? Also, how supportive are the faculties? They seem to emphasize the NextGen curriculum alot, what are your thoughts on the curriculum?

Received an II. I'm IS 3.9+ GPA / 38 MCAT. Verified mid-June, complete first week of July.

II!
OOS 3.9+/39/good ECs/heavy research/excellent LORs.
complete Saturday (July 12)

Compared to other places I've lived, large cities on the east and west coasts, I think cost of living and QOL are pretty good. Cost of living is higher than what you might expect for here, but it can be what you make it. You can live right next to the med school for $800-1000/month, even with roommates, or you can live a little further, still easy walking distance, for ~$500 or less with roommates. Charlottesville is an easy place to live, but if you're used to a big city and expecting all of those amenities, you may be disappointed.

Not totally sure what you mean by supportive, but most of the faculty with whom I've interacted have been great, especially the deans and those involved in CPD. A lot of the lecturers are also often willing to stick around afterwards to talk to students, or to email/meet with students to answer questions.

Personally, I liked the curriculum. I am a class-goer and while certainly not all lectures were worthwhile, I still had plenty of time to study however I wanted afterwards. People like to whine a lot about how the material isn't spoon-fed to them in the form of handouts and instead they have to waste time reading a textbook, gods forbid. I don't know, most of the things that people complain about just never really bothered me all that much. Take with a grain of salt how much they emphasize their curriculum and try to think more about what fits your learning style.

Did you receive any notification confirming receipt of the in-state privileges form?

I didn't receive an email, but when I checked the portal, everything was marked as received and my application was "complete" a day or two after I faxed the form.

Wrote the third essay on greatest challenge as a physician, didn't realize the prompt changed this year. LOL. Glad it became a more ubiquitous prompt at least.

Anything in particular you want to know or are curious about?
Lol yeah I guess that was a vague question. I guess what clinical opportunities are there for first and second year students? What about the simulation center and clinical skills center? The website talks about them being there but doesn't really go into detail.

Clinical opportunities? You have dozens of shadowing opportunities. You spend the whole of the first 1.5 years learning to interview patients and do exams on them, which is done with standardized patients, senior medical students, and live patients.

You spend some time in the SIM center your first 1.5 years, including one simulation during your first week of class/orientation (I can't remember exactly when they did it), but you do much more extensive time down there during third year and you can actually run simulations that are applicable to the clerkship you are on. The Clinical Skills Center is just a bunch of exam rooms--you use them extensively for OSCE and clinical skills practice sessions.

Just submitted my primary to UVA. Can any current students comment on what they love most about the school?

Woke up to groggily open some Snapchats and got pinged with a UVA II e-mail.

Just blown away. I got really excited about UVA while writing their secondary and cannot wait to see it in the flesh. Sending good vibes to all you applicants!

Only 4 hours of class most days, except for CPD once a week. Preclinical only 1.5 years, which leaves lots of time for people like me who have no idea what they want to do by 4th year. Residents and attendings have largely been awesome in 3rd and 4th years. And Charlottesville is pretty great.

@hellanutella, you are killing it so far this cycle! I'm jelly.
Thank you! This still feels very surreal to me.

Our apps are surprisingly similar, so I'm sure some II love is heading your way shortly! You need to bump the class of '19 thread once you get the news!

Hey did they mark the in-state privilege form as received on your application portal? I emailed it a couple of days ago, but nothing shows up on my portal.
Congrats on the II btw!!

They didn't have a separate line for the in-state privilege form. All it had was a green check next to an application complete line.

And thank you!

Are med students allowed to take courses at the other schools at UVA? If so, would that be appropriate to talk about for the "why UVA essay?" Personally, I really like med schools that give you the option of taking classes at their undergrad campus.

I don't know of anyone in my class who does this, but that doesn't mean that it isn't possible. There are lots of opportunities for research and volunteering if you're looking for things to do outside the medical school curriculum.
