2014-2015 University of Virginia Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
found the accepted c/o 2019 fb page... but it would be super awkward to join without a formal invitation right haha

No. When our old liaison ran the Facebook pages, she would wait for people to join and compare them to the list of accepted students, or allow current students to join for the purpose of posting ads, answering questions, etc. I imagine her replacement does much the same thing.

Is there anyone going to second look from northern Virginia and interested in sharing a ride?

I am still debating whether to go on Friday or just go on Saturday (to avoid staying in a Hotel). Otherwise, I will be more than happy to share a ride. (I shared a ride with someone after the interview, so it might have been you).

my alma mater never showed me any love 🙁

I'm sorry to hear about the rejections.

Is UVA still giving interviews? I thought they were wrapping those up about now.

Yes! I will PM you. I am also thinking about going there on Saturday only.

If this offer is still open, I would definitely be interested. I am in the DC area, but could metro as close as possible. I am only interested in saturday (not sure about the schedule details). I also don't have a car, but I do have money!

The last interview days will be next week.

are the rejections in the mail or via email?

Axed last week. OOS LizzyM 71-3. Loved the school and have a significant other accepted into a PhD program here. Ah well...could be just down the road in Richmond 🙂.

Has anyone updated UVA post-acceptance? I know they have some merit money, and I have recently gotten acknowledged on a couple publications and received grant money for a substantial partnership with their telemedicine office. I don't know if they accept that kind of information or if it would do any good.

finally got the rejection email
in state 33 3.93

rejected just now via email :/ my best friend goes here, so this one hurts a bit (though I knew it was a long shot)

Does UVA give merit aid? I didn't think they did...

Has anyone completed the internal financial aid application and know what to put in "college status" for one's parents? I clicked the searchglass thing next to it hoping for help, but nothing popped up; also unsure what to say for their "expected year in school"...tried three different browsers.

For second look, are there student hosts available?

So the dress code for second look is business casual. I assume that includes Friday's welcome reception? Does anyone know?

Today they sent an email about Second Look which stated that the Reception event is also Business Casual.

Same question as above- how do you register? we don't have a way to make a student email yet right?

Actually, yes! I used the UVA email link in the SIS application. There is a tiny icon ("UVA email) at the very top of the page after you log into SIS. You have to complete a short module and quiz on web safety before accessing your email account!

Can anyone share a typical weekly schedule for pre-clinical years? Is attendance mandatory for all classes? I am trying to decide if living close (in walking distance) to the school is absolutely necessary and I can justify relatively high rent.

Thanks! This is very helpful 🙂

First year schedules consist of class Monday - Friday from 8:10 am - 12:00 pm. You also have CPD one afternoon from 1:00 - 500 pm. Not many classes are required, but you'll have a patient presentation every week that's required, and there are a few in-class graded activities/quizzes every week that you probably don't want to miss but technically aren't required. Pretty much all classes are recorded and posted for streaming/downloading 1 - 2 hours after class. The only other reason you'll have to come to Med-Ed is that summative exams (every 3-4 weeks typically) need to be taken on grounds. Just note that schedules get weird during Musculoskeletal and Integument system. Oh, and one semester you'll be placed in a social issues in medicine course, which is basically community service for 10 weeks, 3hrs/week at an organization around Charlottesville. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the information. It's really helpful. ( I also found some information from a different thread, sorry I did not check other threads before posting a question).

By the way, I heard from the first year students there was a quiz which they could take online anytime between Friday and Sunday-- is it every week?

Not every week, it looks like 16 of these exams total for the entire 1.5 years. Here is the schedule:

I was browsing through the UVA match lists and I saw way less elite internal medicine programs in 2014 and 2015 compared to previous years, especially 2012. Do you think this has anything to do with 2014 being the first class to go under the new curriculum, or am I reading way too much into it? Granted, I don't know much at all about match lists, especially outside of IM.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know if there has been recent movement on the waitlist?

on another unrelated note, are there a lot of first year students who live alone? can't decide whether to look for roommates or just go for a single.

As per the Alternates page on their website: "Based on previous years' experiences, we believe the class size will drop below 156 sometime in late June. At that time, review of the Alternate List will begin."

They also say "the average numbers of matriculants from the Alternate List has been approximately 10 to 12 individuals." So if alternate list movement starts, it probably won't go for very long.:xf:

The class of 2012 was a rockstar class. They aren't a good comparison group.

2015 had a lot of IM people. I don't know what to make of that. I can tell you that a good portion of my classmates (2014) got within their top 3 choices, including the IM people. Some couples matched and ended up in lower places than they wanted as a result. One of my friends didn't apply to many top IM programs specifically because she wanted to match near her husband. There is a lot of decision that goes into a match list, and program reputation ends up being a relatively small part of that.

So, basically, I think you are reading too much into it.
