2014-2015 Western Michigan University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i wonder how big are the scholarships? i just got an II but i have already accepted by other schools. the amount of the award would be a significant factor to consider
don't want to get too specific, but mine was <$10K for the merit based one. I have not applied for the need based ones yet.

anyone interviewed in december hear back yet?

Take a quick read through the previous replies, there's been a lot said about the phone interviews. You'll get more perspectives by checking those out!
So it wasn't clear to me from reading the pre-interview information but the phone interviewer incorporates the questions we were asked on the questionnaire during the secondary app process.

The largest I've personally heard of was in the $15,000-$20,000 range... but A) I don't know what next year will look like, and B) there might be larger scholarships I just didn't hear about (M1 here, so just going off what other M1s told me)

Not yet, but hopefully soon...Ms. Shelton told our group she'd try to get decisions out before the holidays. Crossing my fingers hard in hopes that will happen...

I think they try to do within a month... but when you factor in time off for the holidays, that puts it after the holidays. Still, I'll keep my fingers crossed that they'll have decisions sooner than later! Good luck!

Does anyone know if administration and admission are already on break? Do they have the same 2 weeks off as students? I interviewed on December and am very anxious :nailbiting:

We have research at WMed.

All WMed students will graduate with at least one publication. We all give community health projects and present our findings on research day as a poster.

We have a research interest group that specifically pairs you up with a project.

It is here. You don't even have to look for it because it's built in.

Same here.. kinda disappointed to know before Christmas..
but as others said, there is still hope for us.. (maybe...)

I'm feeling hopeful! I just really wanted an acceptance. WMU has been in my top 3 from the get-go and has been tied for 1st for a few months now. I'd be ecstatic to have the opportunity to go there, so fingers crossed for some waitlist motion!

I interviewed mid-December. Haven't heard anything yet, and I'm hoping no news is good news...

Waitlisted... Interviewed on 8th :'(

Hang in there... it's not the best thing, but it's not the worst! I'm thankful I can now enjoy Christmas without stalking my WMed applicant portal. 🙂

I also think it's awesome they got back to us early December folks when they said they would. It's a busy time of year with a lot of vacation, so props to WMed for the quick turnaround.

+1

Does anyone know how many people came off the Waitlist last year?

I don't know any numbers, but there's a lot of movement from their waitlist. I'd expect that to be the trend this year just because the school is new and expensive, so as people have multiple acceptances (lucky ducks), they can make an honest evaluation of where to go.

They also accept a small number of people at a time since the class size is so small. And there was one person recently who was accepted off of the wait list after just a few days.

It's by no means a death sentence!

Yay! My first acceptance!!! So glad!

Is there like a Facebook group or something?

Congrats! Last year they set up the facebook group a little later in the year, I think. This year I think some of the current students will be involved in setting that up. Hopefully you'll come to the second look day (which I think is going to happen on April 10), and you'll be able to meet everybody in person in addition to online! 😛

I'd suggest reading back to my post history for posts where I talk about how the waitlist at WMed works. It's not a traditional waitlist. Heck, I think they should rename it to something other than "waitlist."

I think this is a point of personal pride for the admissions director. It's one of those "It should be this way. Let's make it this way at our school" moments. One of the best things about a new school is that we look at other schools to see what works and what doesn't... and that basic two-way street of respect with applicants and students "works" for sure, so we try to live that every day.

I just responded to 3 posts in a row, so I feel like I should do something special. So I'm also going to make this a happy holidays post, too!

Here are 2 WMed students at our first annual "giving tree," where we collected gifts from faculty, staff, and students to give to women and children at the YWCA who have been affected by domestic violence, and also gifts for the homeless and precariously housed folks served by Ministry with Community, a Kalamazoo non-profit. We collected over 100 gifts, and truly I'm amazed by the generosity of my classmates and colleagues. So consider this a happy holidays card from the current M1s! 😛

I suggest "deferred" list, since it seems like they're basically saying "you're still in the running but we don't want to make a decision at this time."

Perhaps a silly question, but can you be rejected from the waitlist (other than it being next August after classes start)? Or have they decided already they want to admit the people who are on the waitlist, but they only have X seats they can offer at a time?

My understanding is that they don't reject from the waitlist until we're nearing the start of the school year. Someone was accepted off the wait list 2 days before classes started last year.

If you're on the waitlist, it's because they believe you'd be a good acceptance. The question is whether they have a seat to give you at that moment, and whether someone else on the list might get it.

Not to burst anyones bubble, but I am hearing that a lot of people are planning on taking their acceptances. They could just be polite, but how could you say no to our awesome building, amazing faculty, and fun student body?

Yes - figuring this is the case and starting to lose hope a bit. Looking at last year's and this year's thread, it seems like they either accept you off the waitlist within 4-5 weeks or you don't hear back until April-August time frame.

I'm actually going to disagree with my colleague Capt Toad. I think that we will see a fair amount of movement - but as with most schools, you may see more of it in May (when people are forced to hold only one offer). So don't lose hope just yet.

I have no idea 🙂

I will say that I ran into a handful of people on sdn and real life who swear that they are taking their acceptances at WMed. We all know one of course who works in the sim lab. 😉

I was on the "waitlist" last year and didn't get rejected until after the first day of class in August.

On another note, I got an on-site II today!

When was your phone interview? I had mine beginning of December and haven't heard back yet!

Can some of the current med students talk about their experiences at this med school? I loved the school and it seemed to be a good fit when I interviewed there on 12/15. I received an acceptance, which makes me extremely happy, but I want to learn more from current medical students.

Can you be more specific about what you'd like to know?

Anybody else is also welcome to ask something, we have multiple current med students who read this thread and will happily respond.

Was rejected post-phone interview, =\. Was really hoping for a shot here but best of luck to anyone who is waiting and congrats to all the acceptances!

Question for current students:

How does the team based learning time requirement affect your daily schedule? Do you wish you had more freedom in your studies, or is the structure beneficial? That's what really stood out to me during the presentation on interview day. Each day is pretty structured (in that there are things you have to attend to), but there's also quite a bit of free time.

+1, except pre-phone interview. Hadn't heard anything from them in awhile so this was not unexpected. Best of luck to those in the running for this great school 🙂

Sorry to hear that guys. That makes me kind of nervous....when were your phone interviews complete if you don't mind sharing?
My phone interview was Dec 1. Best of luck to you!

do you think WMed would be open to helping out with the travel and lodging cost for 2nd look day?
