2014-2015 Yale University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I really went into my interview yesterday with very low expectations, but Yale blew me away with the thoughtfulness and the sensibility in everything they do. New Haven wasn't half as bad as how I imagined it would be. Rooting myself for the small chance of getting in! It's hard even post interview. They plan to accept only about 200 out of 735 interviewed.
I'm sure you did great ! I'm just hoping to get a chance to interview but I fear that ship has sailed... The curriculum there seems unreal. Definitely sounds like a great place to learn medicine!

Blown away by Yale.
I had the same impression! Yale went from being off the radar to my top choice!! (Or one of them) 🙂

Same same.

Interesting. When I interviewed, dean Silverman said closer to 250/700ish. Maybe they decided on less now.

He sounded very hesitant when we asked bout the numbers. He said a couple hundred-ish.

Not sure how I did when compared to other students. But it felt great. Mainly because there were a lot to talk about since the interviewers paid so much attention to review (I'm sure everybody's)
applications.
Good luck Willy! There should still be a few interview spots left imo. Since the last day is in Feb. The curriculum is super human friendly to say the least.

I'm curious to know the stats of anyone with interview invites.

Yale takes stats very subjectively according to Dean Silverman. Meaning, they take your stats in the context of your background. For example, they expect people who's native language isn't English to have a lower MCAT score overall (not just verbal). One of their best performing students had the lowest MCAT score of his class. He said it would be a mistake to assume that Yale has a cut off or if a high stats would warrant an II at Yale.

That's great to hear. I'm somewhat of a non-traditional student. My UG is in geography from a lesser known school in Alabama. I come from a medical family (dad's a DO and mom started med school but unfortunately didn't finish) and I've always had an affinity for medicine. It just took me awhile to actually accept that I could be a doctor, too. School was never my focus until mid-twenties. I've got a 3.13 cGPA, 3.65 sGPA, 4.0 PostBacc and taking the MCAT soon. I know Yale is somewhat of a grandiose idea but you never know till you try.

Just noticed their "Curriculum Rebuild" page. Not a lot of detail there, but they do have a vague diagram showing the shortened preclinical portion.

The page doesn't indicate a timeline for implementing this, but it will be in effect for next year's entering class, right?

Yes, I talked a good deal with the dean of admissions about the rebuild. We would be the first class to have 1.5 year basic science, but the current students have already tried out aspects of the integrated preclerkship curriculum. He also said he wasn't exactly sure what it will look like when the class of 2019's rotations overlap with those of the class of 2018, but he said that will get figured out.

Besides this informal discussion while I was waiting on interviews, it was never really brought up in my interview day that the curriculum would be changing (which seemed a bit odd because most schools seem to love talking about their curriculum). But I love the idea of a 1.5 year preclerkship phase!

The preclinical years being condensed to 1.5 years seems to be the trend now - a lot of schools seem headed that way.

I received an MD II yesterday after being complete (as an MSTP applicant) in late September.

I have attended a fair number of interviews so far this season, and I am trying to evaluate whether or not it is financially prudent for me to travel to New Haven for interviews... especially when I consider the costs of second look weekends (meep!).

Here are two reasons why I am doubting:
1) Someone on this thread said that Yale doesn't end up accepting many interviewees (when compared to other schools)-- Is this a valid stat?
2) I get the impression from the Yale financial aid website that Yale SOM does not offer merit-based aid, only needs-based aid. Is there anyone on here (perhaps someone who has been to an interview and gotten the financial aid talk) who can comment on financial aid at Yale? It seemed like a norm at other schools for them to offer merit-based packages to competitive students. I have no clue if I would be competitive for such merit-based aid, but I was happy to hear I would be considered for it at these schools. Just another factor I am trying to consider when deciding what to do with my invite...

First of all, if you can afford to consider giving up an Yale II for any reason, then your app must be in really good shape. In which case, congrats to your success! 🙂

Secondly, Yale this year plans to accept nearly 35% students outrightly. It's decent for immediate acceptances (I think I was the one who started the panicking. The dean said 250 out of 735 in the beginning of the season to others, he sounded just a little bit hesitate to say the same when I interviewed, but definitely more than a couple hundred) There were usually WL movements in previous years and the final chance is probably a lot better than that. So if you truly want to go to Yale, you stand a decent chance, probably not much lower than the other schools.

Thirdly, Yale do gave out merit based ones. But the need based ones are already really good. I'll update you on the exact figure and stuff if you need it. But the unit loan is on the low end.

Fourth, not that there is any incentive for me to encourage you to go, but I was a bit hesitate due to many myth I heard before I went, but all were cleared and I now really love Yale and how they do things there.

I finished my application on 9/23. I am just wondering if there is any hope at this point or am I simply waiting for the official rejection once they send those out.

Any insight would be really helpful!

Don't give up hope ! I submitted my secondary around mid July and just got an II a couple days ago. I think the prevailing wisdom is ya never know til ya know. That is until you get a rejection or their interview season ends. There's just no way to know how various schools handle the whole admissions process. Best of luck to you though!

That is quite a bit of time. Thanks! Good luck with your interview Willy38!

Anyone with a recent II know what dates they're currently scheduling for? Wondering if there's any more invites to go out. Thanks!

How is the interview day structured? Can anyone tell me if booking a 5:10 flight out of Hartford would require leaving the interview too early? It probably would mean taking ground transportation that leaves at 2:10 (next is 4:10, unfortunately). Are interviews in the morning and just financial aid sessions, etc. in the afternoon? Thanks so much for any info. Not sure whether to stay a second night...

You will have to leave early but the interview office is generally accommodating and the airport is not busy. I believe they would be ok with you leaving early.

I left at 4:10 for a 6:30 flight and ran into stand still traffic and arrived at the airport at 6. Barely made it. I would try to book a flight for after 6 and leave at 4:10. If not you could stay an extra night. I regret not getting a better feel for new haven while I was there.

+1
I stayed for about 2.5 days, but due to the bad weather I couldn't get out to really enjoy anything. At least I got to eat out a few times. Not as bad as I thought how it would be.

Does yale have student hosting ??

Fingers crossed, morning and evening prayers facing in the direction of New Haven... (noontime prayers in the direction of another school; have to keep my bases covered, of course.)

Love it. Anything at this point would be nice. Good luck with everything!

Thanks for walking me through that! I looked into Yale more and decided to bite the bullet and buy the planes tickets for an interview. Woo! After reading all morning, I'm very excited to see the school!!

Interview dates available were through Friday (2/20).

I was completed on Sept 6 (LM: 76) and have had no updates on my status. Guess I'm out?

Is anyone out there interviewing on Friday, January 9th? My accomodations fell through last week and it is a short turnaround for student hosting. If anyone needs a room or has a room, please PM me. Good luck everyone!

There are a few really good options for Airbnb around the med school when I was looking for my interview stays. Highly recommend. You can find great rooms for about $50.

Anyone complete in early August gotten an II?
@paperbackwriter, I was complete July 27 and just got an II today. I began by being floored, then started bouncing off the walls, and am now dancing on the ceiling. (I'm so happy that I live in a room without a roof! 😆) Past experience warns me that I will be asked about my LizzyM, which, if my calculations are correct, is somewhere in the low 70s. It is too much to hope, I think, that I will be accepted. . .but I'm honored by the II--and I hope that you will soon be a fellow honoree.

That is the sweetest post ever and congratulations! I'm so excited for you!! I hope it goes well! That's amazing.

Guys, What is the most convenient way to get to New Haven from Bradford airport (and vice versa)? And what time should I leave the interview if my flight is scheduled at 5:50pm?

CT Limo is the easiest choice. 80% of time it's reliable, depending on the driver. Not cheap by any means, though.

I used CT Limo for the easiness factor. My driver was 2-3 hours late picking me up from Bradford, then turned around halfway through our drive to go back to the airport to pick up another passenger. I also thought it cost way more than reasonable. Return trip was uneventful. 3/10 would only use again if I was too tired to plan anything else.

EDIT: I was more irked at the time than I am now. Looking back on it, my trip to Yale was just a sh*tshow all around, and the CT Limo was just another thing that went not-according-to-plan-or-expectation.

Unbelievable! I can't believe the driver put you through that AND expected exorbitant payment. Sorry things didn't go well.

In a state like Connecticut, short of finding a cab that will take you all the way from Bradley to NHV (40 min drive, no traffic), a sh*tty service like CT Limo is one of the only choices to get around. For convenient public transportation, LGA/JFK is the choice.
