2014-2015 Yale University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ha ha, I've heard the same. I was being facetious.

I shouldn't call out lurkers, though. We were all lurkers once. To all of the lurkers reading this, we still want you to share with us what happens when your decision comes out.

I have also heard, from the Dean himself, that if you grew up in a certain city in CT or went to some random high school you were eligible for some odd weird scholarship. So maybe it's not entirely merit.....

It wouldn't surprise me if there were some oddball university-wide scholarships endowed by the estates of veterans of the French and Indian War that can go to medical students who fulfill certain strict criteria.

(Am I crazy for thinking @moop knows about this stuff somehow and could set us straight? RIP @moop.)

Best of luck, everyone. I particularly hope that you, @Willy38, and our other Duke marathoners are the first across the line here.

(Although we have to brace for the possibility that it'll be a lurker with a generic username who has never posted before and only posts once afterward to ask, "Does Yale give any full-tuition merit scholarships?")
Thanks breakintheroof, I hope so too. Best of luck to everyone though ! (I'm still betting on decisions released the 10th though )

I don't know...my fin aid lady Joanna? said that there would be merit scholarships given out not by fin aid, but by the admission office, during the interview. She also made a guess as to the total of merit award and said that it would be way under 10 and that it can be any where from one year tuition to four. However, it could also be the case that instead of the "merit award" in the traditional sense, those were special fellowships/scholarships given to students with certain background.

I tried to verify through MDApp. I've only found one guy with merit scholarship in the past several years. He's a super star+URM, who had a merit award from pretty much every single top schools but few that just never gave any.

I remember the number 5-10 coming up from the lovely lady from financial aid. I think that it was at the discretion of the Dean, though. Which Dean that is I have no idea.

Oh good. I wasn't hallucinating. However, judging from such exceedingly low appearance of this magical merit scholarship (on MDApp and on SDN), I think normal sinners like us should not count on it.

All of the posts on this and U Penn's thread the past few days have been driving me crazy... These next 2 weeks are probably going to feel longer than the 10 months since I started applying we can do it! We can hold out! We can cross fingers and be patient!

...I'm both trying to be encouraging and convince myself of these things haha

so has anyone called admissions to see if decisions are coming out early ?

Great idea! You should totally do that! 🙂

If no one has called, I can do it. I'm going to lunch soon.

Whoa. Déjà vu.

What do you mean? are you afraid that it turns out to be another Duke all over again? 😛

Just called.

"We don't have anything we can say specifically except that decisions come out by mid-March. Sometimes they're on the earlier side and sometimes the later side."

@FriendlyFH This felt familiar because I made the same call to Harvard yesterday!
Prop to you sir for trying! It doesn't sound like today....

A bunch of first years will be calling accepted students to offer congratz and other info on the evening of March 11th, which makes me inclined to think that the decisions will be sent out via email on March 10th. Good luck to you all 🙂

Thank you for letting us know. It does help a lot to know the precise date.
Now if only I can afford to go travel in somewhere without internet or phone for this entire week.

BTW, y'all who just got in NP at Harvard should come to Yale. I'm obligated by law to tell you that Harvard sucks.

Can't touch HST though...

^ No. You all should go to Harvard.

I don't know...if I were accepted out of a miracle, then I'd want to study with those super stars who somehow snatched double admissions from both places.
But if I got waitlisted, then I probably will have a bit more selfish thought.

The question is.. would you wanna study with those superstars as a part of the Yale System or not? I vote Yale System.

I think the Yale system will make it possible to study with those superstars without the crushing pressure of competition.

Yup, this thread is where the ppl have come to recover from that exhausting Duke process...glad there's a much more clear date over here 🙂

How could anyone say no to those eyes? That's what mine look like too. Take note, Yale!

Edit: @Willy38 , I just saw your post in the Duke thread (I did not apply there but I started following it in order to make myself feel better about having to wait for Yale). I am so, so sorry. I really hope you get in here.

@Willy38 Yeah, after getting disappointing news myself, I was really rooting for you and everyone else in limbo! Heres to hoping for better news on this thread!

Yale doesn't do the thing where you don't get reviewed by the committee if you don't turn in your post-interview survey, right?? Just realized I never mailed mine in.......

:wow: what schools would do such a cruel thing?? Pretty sure I turned mine in on the same day right after I finished interviewing...

Does Yale send confirmation emails when you upload an update? I uploaded one almost a month ago and haven't gotten any sort of confirmation (every other school I sent an update to acknowledge it in some way).

That paper survey? I don't recall them saying anything about that. You shouldn't worry.

I uploaded one recently too and did not receive a confirmation email. I do, however, see it on the portal under Document Upload.

Allow me to quote Duke thread:
Did all of you who were stuck in "limbo" complete your post-interview feedback survey? Dr. Armstrong said that was the only way our applications would go to committee to make a decision.

Haha yup, saw that on the Duke thread and freaked out a little...

I didn't mean to derail Yale thread or bring in anxiety from other place to here. We weren't there so we won't know why they chose to collect the post interview questionnaire the way it was. As strange as it sounds, there might be perfectly good reasoning behind it.

In any case, I am grateful for Yale. There hasn't been any confusion at all and everything was very thoughtful.

Their survey was electronic so we didn't have to mail anything like some people seemed to have to at Yale (though Yale admissions people just told us to hand it in before we left).

While we are waiting, can current student comment on any detail of the summer research program at Yale before the school starts in Aug? I heard about it from someone currently working at Yale and it sounded great.

The wait is getting to my head ... so I'm going to ask a silly question: the survey shouldn't have any effect on our chances, right? I didn't put a lot of effort into mine ... circled stuff quickly on the front and didn't write any specific comments on the back  I hope it's not taken as a lack of interest ... 🤔

Did we have to put our name on it? I don't remember...either way I don't think it will matter much

Paranoid much?

I mean I mailed my survey in because I forgot to hand it in at the end of the day...I really don't think they factor this into decisions! I think it's purpose is to see how their interview day can be better by hearing what interviewees have to say about the day.
