2015-2016 Columbia University College of P&S Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I got a complete email a long time ago (7/22) but under the "status" page it doesn't have a green check and the "application is complete and under review." Should I ask them about this? I figured if my application were complete then it would have that just like the other apps that use that same software do. Just getting overly nervous about all of this :nailbiting:

I got an MSTP II yesterday! Complete 8/12.

I already mentioned this in the MD/PhD invite thread, but thought I'd mention it here too in case there are MSTP applicants here who aren't following that thread.

Did anyone with an II apply to the 3-year program for PhDs? I'm wondering if those applications are reviewed separately.

Did anyone who received IIs apply to the Bassett program as well?

Hey guys, I'll be flying to New York from Texas. So do you think it'd be wise to send an in the area email if I'm interviewing at Hofstra to all the NY schools?

I did this for Columbia since I'm interviewing at schools in NY and NJ during the same week, however, the response I got was pretty neutral. Basically said if we decide to grant you an interview we'll take this under consideration. I don't think it necessarily helps but if it makes you feel better do it since I don't think it hurts.

Hello everyone, good luck on your journeys, hopefully they end at the greatest medical school of all time and space, Columbia P&S. Now with 25% more phallic pronunciation!

This might be a dumb question, but would requesting this reflect negatively on my application? It is bad to show schools that you have interest in other schools?
I'm sure you have taken care of this already, but I guarantee, as a former interviewer, that this will not impact you application AT ALL

Hi guys! I believe this was already discussed earlier, but I couldn't find it so I apologize.
Columbia is receptive to "in the area for another interview" emails, correct? Has anyone sent those? Where do you send those to, and how did they respond? Thank you!

Doesn't say where to send it, though. I'd imagine the main admissions email.

Commenting because I do not get alerts from the watch button

Ah... I was looking much earlier. Thank you!! It sounds like it's not really worth it?
They want you to upload your request in PDF form on the "Update" tab. Then when they see it they'll send you a polite email that says they will take the date into account if you're offered an interview. No evidence that it does anything, but they are receptive to having the info on file. I say send it and forget about it.

I remember reading that they are reviewed together with the 4-year program.
I called the admissions office a while ago and spoke with one of the deans of the 3 year program. She said that the 3 year program is reviewed completely separate from the 4 year. So if you are a PhD applying to the 3 year program, you are only competing against other PhDs.

EDIT: She said they accept 5-6 students per cycle.

Hmm, starting to get a bit concerned. I've been verified for a while and still haven't received a secondary. My references haven't submitted their letters yet, but I'm assuming that doesn't matter. Should I contact the office? Pretty sure the message didn't get filtered.

Sorry I'm new to the conversation, just a quick question:

After being complete how long have people generally been waiting for II?

There's no set timeframe. I've been complete since mid-July. People before me and after me have gotten IIs, and will continue to do so throughout the cycle. Heck, I may even get one eventually. Trying to outguess the adcoms is only going to drive you mad!

I'd try and ask. Many of us got Columbia's secondary pre-verification.

I can't wait to visit New York and Columbia. I have never been able to visit Columbia, too busy w New York's attractions!

Just to verify, who hasn't received the Bassett email?

As for those that did, did it include this note?
"Please note: Your application is under active consideration by the Admissions Committee. Changing your program from regular MD to the Columbia-Bassett track will not affect your application to either program."

Columbia is a big reach for me and it was the first secondary I submitted, so it wasn't great. Hopefully I might still get an invite.

Happened to me as well. I'm so over these schools spamming us! (Duke inviting me to apply to their singapore program, case sending me info about their anesthesiology assistant program etc). Been complete with Columbia since end of July and still no word :'(
