2015-2016 Florida State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Last update I got from this school was about the email to update my secondary, I am getting very worried, ive only had 2 II and both OOS I will probably be waitlisted for both =[

hopetobedoctorsoon don't worry so much, I was in that same boat even before I got my II for FSU COM last year. Keep that hope alive, friend.

Morisseth to answer your question:
Likes: Professors. They are for the most part so awesome. Clinical exposure. It is so incredible what they have you do at the time that we do it! Summer is intense but I loved summer too! Anatomy was great, just kind of packed and we didnt know what to expect. Everyone thought they knew how to prepare but none of us did haha.
Dislikes: THE WEATHER. x10^10.

Hey for those who've been accepted this year, how have they notified you?

Same over here, have you ever tried calling about an update?
When I called, I just got a really rude response from the guy I spoke with. Can't say I was left with a favorable impression, but since the application was free, decided not to withdraw right after.

Oh, he basically just told me to refer to the "application complete" email that says you may not hear from admissions until June.

Does anyone know if decisions come out on Fridays?

I know this school isn't that receptive OOS, but any good news for any OOS applicants?

Guys, I know this will be hard for you to hear, but OOS is a really hard fight to make for FSUCOM. I think we might have a total of like, 3 in our class of 120. I'm not saying you won't be successful, and I really hope you are Cyril and Snazzy, but just realize that it is an incredible uphill battle.

Has anyone heard of people being accepted off the waitlist before interviewing season is done? Or is it only after the decision deadline?

I have only heard of people being accepted later on in April/May not sure if they periodically review the waitlist though. Were you waitlisted recently I am anxiously awaiting a decision? Did they email you?

I was wait listed in November, and yes they contacted me via email

been complete since 9/24, sent updates, (including update on upcoming international mission trip) and still radio silence. FL resident, LizzyM >70. is there still hope?

Yes there is still hope. Interview season is long and is not over yet. I would be patient, but also update the adcom as you see fit. Every time you have an update go ahead and send it to them. They must be getting a lot of emails, but I am sure they read them.

The waitlist will move most around April when people have to decide which school they are attending assuming they hold multiple acceptances. It's also hard to estimate because it depends on the year and how many people are going to commit to the school.

Congrats! When did you interview?
Thanks! I interviewed 10/26, was placed on "Hold" 11/6, then sent in an update 2 weeks ago with my Fall semester grades (currently doing a MS). Seems like they respond well to updates!

That's awesome! Is hold like a waitlist?

Probably? I received an e-mail stating the admissions committee had not made a final decision yet so my application status was on "hold," and I should send in my fall semester grades as soon as they became available.

Just got placed on hold... Guessing this is the same as wait list? Interviewed on 1/11

Well, today I received an email that reminded me of the dedication and effort that I've placed into the accomplishment of this dream. I feel blessed in all aspects. January 29th, 2016 is the date when I get to visit my dream school for the first time. Good luck to everyone and believe in yourself! If you don't do it, who's gonna do it for you? No one.

Current students - what complexes do most of the med students live in? In an ideal world, I'm looking for a furnished 1/1. Thanks! 🙂

If you don't mind sharing, what are you getting a MS in? DO you think it significantly improved your undergrad stats?

Doing an MS in Medical Science. It's pretty much a less intense version of the first year of med school. And yeah, I absolutely vouch for it! My UG GPA was a solid average, but I've maintained a 4.0 GPA in this MS. If you're worried about your academics, an MS is like a second chance to prove to schools that you have what it takes. Every school I interviewed at seemed to be very receptive to MS programs.

Same. That's been my experience too.

I am a 2013 FSU graduate. Words cannot express how upset I am with the lack of professionalism for my first and only choice to attend medical school.

I got out of the military in 2014, and I had an opportunity to move my family almost anywhere in the world. I chose the Tallahassee area because I wanted to be close to FSU. I spent two years and thousands of dollars out of pocket on post-bacc work and MCAT prep so I could apply to FSUCOM. Their website says they require four (4) credit hours of Organic Chemistry, which I have. It has not changed in over a year. I used their published pre-req requirements to plan my post-bacc coursework. I was surprised that Orgo II was not required, but many allopathic schools are moving away from Orgo II in favor of Biochem (which I took last year at FSU). Nevertheless, four (4) credit hours of Orgo is pretty explicit. There is no ambiguity whatsoever in that requirement.

I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER MY APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED TO FIND OUT THAT ORGANIC CHEMISTRY II IS REQUIRED!!!

Applying to medical school is no simple feat. Sacrifices need to be made. It is not a low stress time in peoples' lives. If my emails *and* voicemails were returned in a reasonable amount of time, I may have been able to register for an Orgo II course in Jacksonville (which I would gladly drive every week for a chance to go to medical school). Alas, the best FSU could do was fix their erroneous requirements for next year's admissions. People can spend up to a quarter of a million dollars to get an MD. This is SHAMEFUL!

I will apply to the University of Queensland School of Medicine this year. If accepted, I will sell my house and move my wife and daughter to Australia. Thank you for listening to my rant, and I hope no one else has to deal with such bureaucratic rigidity.

Sorry to hear all that you had to go through, this road is tough as it is without all the hidden obstacles that sometimes pop up. However, just to play devil's advocate, I don't know too many people who've gotten into med school without having to take Orgo II. Did you check out the MSAR? Because the MSAR clearly states that FSU requires 8hrs of Organic Chemistry. I was under the impression that was a requirement at most schools anyways...if not an undergrad graduation requirement for most science majors.

Going off your post it sounds like you only applied to one school as you would've encountered this obstacle at many other schools you applied to whether it be MD or DO. It seems a bit extreme to have gotten this far only to move across the globe and become an IMG (assuming that you wanted to come back to the USA one day for residency/practice). None of my business but, why not just take Orgo II w/ lab, make sure you meet all the requirements and reapply next cycle and more broadly at that?

While it sounds like communication could've been better, it is ultimately up to the applicant to make sure you have everything ready and meet all the requirements for the programs in which you have chosen to apply to.

Best of luck.

Does FSU offer any scholarships to its med students?
Yes they do. You'll hear all about scholarships in the summer. The big one, "the-free-tuition-if-I-commit-in-blood-to-primary-care" scholarship application goes out during the summer term.

Quick update: I spoke with the Dean regarding my situation. It appears that the staff miscommunicated with me that 8 hours of Organic Chemistry are required. The website is and remains correct: FSUCOM only requires 4 credit hours.

My application was given a fair consideration. Unfortunately, I will not be joining the FSUCOM Class of 2020.

While a 31 (10/11/9) MCAT may have been sufficient, a 3.07/3.07 GPA/sGPA killed any hope (as well as going off on the admission staff over the phone... lol). While a SMP/M.Sc. may be suggested, I am not getting any younger. I am already looking at finishing residency in my mid-late 30s. Even if accepted to grad school, I would probably have to move and dish out tens of thousands of dollars. So UQ-O it is.

Congrats to all the new MS1s. I hope you enjoy FSU as much as I did.
