2015-2016 Pennsylvania State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I looked up their med form.... Looks like this isn't a joke.
I'm confused. Is the medical student receiving a rectal exam or giving a patient the rectal exam?
If the former, ...why?
If the latter, ...why?

Much needed humor in this arduous process of waiting. How many have sent updates (transcripts, etc.)?

haha I wish I were joking, but I am completely serious. There is a rectal exam on the medical form accepted students have to have filled out by a physician before matricuation into PSU. Take a look at http://www.pennstatehershey.org/web/studenthealth/home/incoming/step2 and click "physical form" to see for yourself.

Anyone have any ideas as to why they would like us to get anally probed before starting classes? I am seriously considering defering this but am worried I'll run into some problems.

Have you gone to your physician and subsequently returned the paperwork to the Health Office? I have already completed all those forms, and there is no "formal rectal exam". For females they ask for the last pap smear. The Health office called me after reviewing my paper work stating I'm missing one shot and that is all. There is no rectal exam, just call the office yourself if you are still unsure.

If there were a rectal exam, it would explicitly say so...

"Hi Penn State Health Office, how may I help you?"
"I was wondering if I need to get a rectal exam before starting medical school?"

That's too embarrassing to call and ask haha. I'm glad you didn't have to go through with the rectal exam but did you give your physician this form to fill out: http://www.pennstatehershey.org/doc...tion.pdf/85a9da5c-3418-4a7d-af41-c77799eaff20 ? What did your physician do for the last item? It clearly says Pelvic/Rectal, which is why I was assuming there is a rectal exam. Just wondering whether there was a different form that you used or whether your doctor just skipped the rectal part.

Well, considering that the Health Office has reviewed my paperwork, they would have probably told me if I didn't use the correct forms (the same forms you keep linking too). I really thought you were joking, but you seem to thoroughly believe that there is a rectal exam. Take some time and google the rationale for a rectal exam. Also, if you are too embarrassed to call the health office in regards to confirming whether there is a rectal exam or not I do not know how to further help or contribute to this post as those were my intentions. Since you want to keep affirming that there is rectal exam, at least call the office to confirm instead of making everyone on this forum believe that it is true. Who knows, I could definitely be wrong and some how have made it past the Health requirements without having a rectal exam, but I highly deem that unlikely. I hope you figure it out!

Just to be clear, I am not affirming that there is a rectal exam because I have not actually called their office or taken the exam myself. I am simply pointing out that there IS a rectal exam section on the form that we have been given. Again, I'm not saying you are wrong, I'm simply pointing out what is present on the form we are to have filled out. Everyone here is free to look at the form for themselves and decide whether they think there is a rectal exam or not. Thank you for your input, and I'm glad you didn't have to go through with the rectal exam - hopefully the rest of us have the same experience.

Let's pray for better movement next week fellow waitlisters! It seems like from last years thread, there were 7+ sdn members accepted from the waitlist during that week. I don't know if that is saying much but this thread has been very quiet (with the exception of rectal exams) so I expect movement soon. :|

Any accepted students have information on the accelerated family medicine program at PSU?

Up to four students a year will be offered admission to the accelerated program.

Have they already offered this program to 4 accepted students?

I just called them and they couldn't tell me anything, and to just keep contact info updated. It doesn't sound good, they couldn't even say if there was movement.

I think there was at least one person accepted from the hold list and a couple of others withdrawing for the SDP thing. Maybe they haven't had a chance to have adcom meeting to decide next batch of acceptances. I'm sure we'll hear soon about someone being pulled off the list.

Accepted off the waitlist about an hour ago via email. Interviewed in January. Beyond ecstatic. Even if I have to do a rectal exam. 🙂

Very jealous but congratulations!!! Can I ask how long it took you to hear back from your interview date in january?

4 weeks. I thought I was doomed. Interview didn't feel right and they hit me with that wait list really quick. There's hope everyone!!

If you don't mind me asking, when in January did you interview??

Another week come and gone. I've personally lost hope of coming off the waitlist for this school. Good luck everyone still waiting. And now my watch is ended.

I just got in off the waitlist this morning. Interviewed late Feb, put on hold early April. OOS. Hella stoked! Never really used SDN much but I wanted to post bc I had legit given up hope on school this cycle and had already prepped everything for this next cycle to reapply. So don't give up hope!

Happy to see people getting of the hold list but still sad at the relatively low amount of movement this cycle. I guess it's basically over in terms of getting of the hold list.

Did everyone just snail mail their deposit? Doesn't seem like there's any online payment system available. Also, did you do check or cash or...?

Sorry this is kind of a preposterous question and I'm being crazy does anyone know if there is a pre-matriculation drug screen here? Bc I was going to shave my body hair completely before we start for a religious custom (that I can totally skip out on if I need to) but don't wanna look like I did that to avoid like a hair test or something haha

There are many ways to screen for drugs and no medical school is going to discriminate against you based on your religion. Common sense tells me you're good to go.

True- it's just a situation I can easily avoid and if they do hair test I don't need to/want to go through that hassle of explaining all that. Just wanna go to school lol

My understanding is that all schools pretty much do a standard drug test and urine sample would suffice.
If it doesn't hurt you anyway, just delay it.

So I'm still on the waitlist...and AMCAS opens tomorrow. Is it kosher to submit a new application while you're already on the wait-list?

Thanks in advance.

I'm also still on the waitlist. I hate to be pessimistic but I don't think it looks like it will be moving. It's been like this for ~ a month now.

Found out there are 3 spots available, unless they moved class size to 145

Yesterday they sent an email saying they had 131 responses to the accepted survey, and were waiting for 14 more. Maybe they lowered the class size

That is interesting, since this year's MSAR shows 149 matriculated students. Not sure how common lowering class size is versus denying waitlist. Either way thanks for info.

Has there been any movement at all from the wait-list lately?

I saw a few people post on the Facebook group in the last 2 weeks that just barely got in. Can't imagine there will be too much more.. Orientation starts Wednesday.

Hi guys!
i've been working on the secondary for this cycle and was wondering if you guys have any feedback on this prompt:
"Briefly describe an experience where you had to navigate a complex system (e.g. personal experience, group activity, or development of a project) to achieve an end. Reflect on the qualities and attributes required by you to achieve success in this experience"

i wanted to write about preparing a manuscript as first author-what do you guys think?
