2015-2016 Tulane University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oh gosh that sounds risky!

i mean, it's not unlikely - there were MANY rounds of interviews given before mine, so i can understand things filling up. i distinclty remember clicking through the months and not seeing anything available to select until Dec...

but now i'm getting paranoid that i just clicked haphazardly! @monkeygirl92 when did you receive your II? did you see these sept dates recently or a few weeks ago?

I'm just speculating but it's possible that they only have parts of interview dates open at once. Considering what someone said earlier about getting an II in September and interviewing in October or something like that, they might just have certain dates open at any given moment? Just guessing and also using that reasoning to justify the fact that I still have neither an II nor rejection haha.

yeah could be!

I got an ii today! I'm in shock. 10,000 applicants for 500 interview spots! I may have shed some tears of joy :biglove:
congrats!! what were your potential Interview date options? 🙂

Hey, I received mine on July 27th, I was trying to select an interview through my phone and the earliest was October 13th. I think that the admissions might do it on purpose by selecting specific interviewees for a certain period of time? I am not sure, but there were people who got interviews in August and were able to select September interviews.
I even e-mailed the admissions office, they were super nice about it, but told me that there wasn't any date available prior October. I tried !! 😀

maaan that makes it sound like i'm less worthy because theyre like 'yeah...just interview in december. when we've already accepted a bunch of people. that'll do'

I am sure you have a great file, that's why they want to meet you in person. We should give ourselves a break and not be too critical. whether it's in October or December, it's all about rocking the interview and getting an acceptance.

YOU RIGHT.

The rate limiting step in the Tulane process is getting the interview, not the acceptance. We aren't going to turn down a great candidate at the end of the interviewing season because we are "full". Like most schools, Tulane over-accepts on the assumption people will turn us down.

Planning on taking a week off work so I can take a New Orleans vacation 🙂

This candidate gets it. Taking a week off to see New Orleans is exactly the attitude gets interviewees accepted. The interview itself is almost superfluous at this point. Be sure to mention your vacation on your interview, and enjoy your trip!

Almost every thread I've seen on SDN analyzes the month you interview and how that affects your chances, and trying to make sense of it all - I just got swept in that. Of course I'm ecstatic to have an II, whether it would be in September, December, or even February. I'm grateful for any consideration by Tulane.

Jeez, just spent 30 mins reading through the entirely of this thread. Kind of depressing. Complete email 7/15. Dead silence since.

Maybe people are getting some earlier dates, which weren't available in late July, because other applicants have canceled or rescheduled interviews due to getting interviews at other schools that are important to them? It would make sense that anyone getting an II at the end of July is scheduling ASAP since they haven't heard back from other schools yet, then maybe rescheduled to prioritize? Also, flying around for interviews is really expensive! If you got a bunch, you might cancel some! Think about it, it would be really complicated to only offer certain dates to certain applicants based on their relative candidacies

I thought everyone voted that the Mean Girl portion of this thread makes it fun and cheerful?!

Cheer up! You guys do realize AdCom members are PEOPLE and it is the end of summer right before labor day and people take vacations AND the same people who are judging your application are helping the brand new MS1s throughout the crazy process of beginning medical school.

Just breathe. If you're rejected, you're rejected. If you get an II then you get one. I know the wait sucks BALLS but cheer up, mate! Or at least go drink some tequila. 🙂 <3

My first rejection today from my top choice school. Buh bye dreams of living in NOLA. LizzyM 71-73. Submitted 7.22, complete email 8.10

Was hoping to hear good news from this school but guess not :/

Rejected: Submitted and Complete on 08/05

Damn, more brothers have been martyred. Honestly, at least you know. I've been in purgatory since 7/15, I'd rather get my rejection out of the way :/

Hey guys, is there some sort of student housing thing you can do at Tulane during interviews?

Got the boot from Tulane today 🙁 Goodluck to everyone!!

dittos. been complete since 7/20 and a response would be nice.

How long after being complete did it take for them to send a "complete" e-mail? I've been complete for 2 weeks now and haven't heard anything :/

I never received a complete email after submitting everything, though my portal has green check marks next to "Application File Complete" and "In-Progress"

I'm taking about 5 days to see the city. Any sites/restaurants you recommend as must sees/must eats?

Depending on your budget and tastes:
Dick and Jenny's-contemporary creole $$$
Dante's Kitchen - contemporary creole $$$
Boucherie - contemporary creole $$
Cochon-contemporary creole $$/$$$
Dooky chase -$$ classic creole. go here!!!! The truest of New Orleans restaurants, you know the Disney movie the Princess and the Frog? Ok maybe you don't but the chef at this place was THE inspiration for that movie. She's around 80-90 years old and still cooking
Domilise's -$ poyboy shop. Shrimp and oyster poyboy!
The Joint - $ really, really good BBQ, kinda out of the way however
Near Tulane uptown campus:
Jaqumois- creole $$/$$$
Maple street patisserie - French bakery $
Camilla grill -American, historical diner $
Bachi canteen - Vietnamese $
Adam street poyboy - poboy shop $
Near bourbon street:
Vuexcarrie pizza: $3-5 a slice and it's amazing
Pat O's: $/$$ they have a piano bar and good creole staples and ofc hurricanes.

If you're into music this site has all the live events happening in New Orleans on any given day:

If you like burritos you need to go to Felipe's, it's uptown. Definitely Camellia's for breakfast one day.

Handsome Willy's! That's the dive bar next to the med school.
Domenica has great pizza and is half price during happy hour, but happy hour ends at 5 🙁
Lots of great places on magazine street if you're staying uptown.
Downtown in the quarter there's Deanie's seafood, kind of pricey. Red fish grill is excellent and a little cheaper than Deanie's. Acme is good but they over-salt everything at the location in the quarter.
Get some oysters at Luke during happy hour in the CBD. All their specialty cocktails are half price during happy hour too.
Basically all the John Besh restaurants have great happy hour specials.

Sorry to hear that.

You have the same stats as me except with a better undergrad GPA....better EC's and a mean girls avatar. Still waiting on that rejection.

It's not about numbers and who's better, though! You might be exactly what they are looking for to fit their mission! I wrote on my secondary that I love that they invented Popeyes....

Jk..

but seriously, don't let anyone's rejections/IIs concern you. We are all different and are rejected from medical schools because it wasn't a good fit for them or us. If it's meant to be, it will be.

That also might be the tequila speaking... <3 Good luck guys!

Excellent suggestions for a carless visitor near the downtown campus. My only change would be instead of Acme, when you are in the French Quarter and in the mood for oysters, go across the street to Felix's. Same great product, but the line is shorter and you won't have to pay for the Acme marketing / advertising campaign.
