2015-2016 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Waitlisted as well. Interviewed 9/18. Congratulations to those who have been or will be accepted and best of luck to those on the waitlist, too.

I'm not at peace, and I don't really care whether it's a waitlist or a rejection. Either way it blows.

Sorry folks, I don't mean to rain on your parades...I really am happy for everyone who got the call; part of what I loved so much about my Davis interview was the group I was in on interview day and I'm stoked to think of you guys going to school there!

So did you end up getting waitlisted?

Thanks for your reply, its fresh to see somebody in this thread with real answers amidst all of the chaos in the application process. So essentially, you guys look back into the waitlist pool and reevaluate applicants to figure out which ones fit best and go from there?

I imagine you basically would be competing with clones of yourself?

For example if a white male with good research withdrawals they would then accept another white male with good research... that's what I've heard at least.

Who told you this? I highly doubt it works like that, it just doesn't seem very logical lol. If anything, I would imagine they would go by numbers, not race demographics. IE, if someone with a 3.9/35 withdraws, they find someone with similar stats to take their place. Doing it by race just seems absurd (and probably illegal)

I always thought this is mostly how admissions worked. I was told this by a medical student at another of the UCs. It might be untrue, but at least it somewhat made sense to me. Why else are most classes exactly 50/50 male/female? They must do that on purpose...

I just got the following:

"Delay in Decision Notification:

Dear UCD SOM Applicant,

If you are receiving this email it is because your final decision notification post-interview will be delayed. The Committee is continuing to review files and you will be notified once a final decision has been made. Thank you for your patience."

Is this waitlist? Because it doesn't sound quite like waitlist. 😕

Gorramit, I was just starting to accept my lack of acceptance, this is just torture, only I'm begging it not to stop because damn, that renewed hope tastes so good!

Seriously, though...if this is for real it seems a little odd to wait so long after the official decision date before telling us this, especially the way they structure the notifications. Unless they just haven't sorted out the waitlist/rejections yet?

Sounds like a final pool situation

Unfortunately I have no idea what that is...it certainly doesn't fit in with what UCD told us of their admissions and what I've seen so far.

Other schools use the final pool as a place to place interviewed candidates that are neither accepted or rejected (or wait listed) until potentially March-ish when lists are finalized. Technically, you're still in the running as they compare you to other applicants in the final pool.

Edit: I can't say this is what Davis does, but it happens elsewhere.

See, that'd be weird considering the office specifically said there'd be a final decision made by the 15th...obviously this email is saying that they didn't meet that goal for me, but having an entire pool intentionally set up like that and not mentioning it seems...weird.

I got the same email. It gave me some relief as at least a its not a flat out rejection, which I was preparing myself for. Fingers crossed!

I wonder if we can send updates? The email post-interview specifically said that they don't accept updates but the FAQ section on the portal says they do after interviewing. Any thoughts on this?

I was thinking more an email going "soooooo what's going on, folks?" only far more official sounding and whatnot. They do give us someone to contact if we have any questions about this...

How many acceptances do they usually extend to people on the waitlist?

@mehc012 you and me both, and I feel weirdly at peace.

I'm just hoping for a waitlist. From the materials they sent out, ~110 acceptances go to the waitlist, which I think is even more than they give out post-interview!

If I get rejected, then I may start worrying about my application/interview skills.

Haha, you can thank me by not calling me (or probably anyone other than a 6yr-old boy, but I can only speak for myself) champ again. Deal? 😛

*note not actually upset at ALL, but it's worth a mention*

Lmao...didn't mean any offense. I call everyone champ.

Thanks 😉

This is med school admissions, if we weren't crazy before this process, we're definitely all crazy as **** now.
Man, I thought I'd retained my sanity, but this "no call, you didn't make the cut...PSYCH we haven't actually decided anything yet!" seems to have done a number on me. Whiplash, owwwwwww :meh:

+1

Did anyone not get the email? Or did they send them out to everyone who hasn't heard anything?

With medical school admissions that's usually the case. It's so common to get contradictory information, vague and poorly worded emails, and incorrect deadlines, you just gotta roll with it, even though it's really ****ty.
Eh, I figure they just overlooked some folks or got behind and caught it when they went to send out emails. Ah, well, it will all shake out eventually.

Hey guys. I'm sorry I haven't been more involved in this thread. I am a first year student at Davis, so I went through a lot of this stuff last year. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to answer.

It's that + what I said. This sort of stuff is the nature of the game.
True. I guess I'm not bitter at Davis though, because they've been so cordial throughout the entire process.

Congrats on all the acceptances!

.......so who else is waiting for a secondary invite...?

Primaries verified 9/1
Me 🙁 but if it gives anyone any peace of mind, I talked to admissions and they are FOR SURE still giving out secondaries...

This is hilarious. I found you on every thread I checked today. I think you and I are both waiting for secondaries from the same schools! UCSF, UCD, and UCLA PRIME for me..

Did you call Davis already? I was about to do the same. Glad to hear it's not over (...yet).

LOL, I did and basically it was a "be patient, we thoroughly review each applicant" response. So..no news is good news?

I had lost all UC hope until I received UCLA Prime...the rest will come...(hopefully)

Is UC Davis at all receptive to updates?

Just got my secondary!! Hope you did too!! 🙂

Davis doesn't accept updates at all. Not even if you are invited to an interview.
Well then they are lying the through their teeth on the secondary portal

I apologize, they must have changed their policy this cycle. When I applied last cycle, there were absolutely no updates accepted.

Congrats!!! I haven't yet :/
I haven't even received the primary confirmation e-mail that the UC's usually send out before secondaries.
Hope you get an II soon!

Haven't gotten a secondary yet either 🙁. Got a confirmation email that they got my app back in July. I feel like not receiving the primary confirmation is strange however. Have you called?

Congratulations everyone who's accepted already! Anyone who interviewed on 9/04 morning?

Good luck everyone still waiting on a secondary or II.

I'm almost wanting to call them or email them about not receiving a secondary if it hits November... but at this point I don't know... maybe their screening process is more intense here than at other schools and they want me to save my money 😛

I received a secondary nearly the same minute they sent me a confirmation of receiving my application, some people received theirs weeks after. It all seems so random...

Does UC Davis review applications in the order that they receive them? Do we still have a chance at an II if we were complete mid-July?

You've most likely been silently rejected. UCD holds onto people rejected till late February "because they can", even though there's no real reason for it.

This.. I wish more med schools would just come out and tell you when they've decided to no longer consider you.. there's still a significant portion that does not, and it is endlessly frustrating for the applicant.

Makes it sound like there is some magical formula for screening in, and then they manually do the others.

Ah :/ Bummer. Thanks for the info. Really wanted an II here 🙁

This isn't true. When I applied last cycle, I was complete early July, and I didn't hear anything from Davis until the middle of February. I was offered an interview in the middle of Feb, interviewed beginning of March, and was accepted in the middle of March. It is waaaayyy too early in the cycle to start talking about things like silent rejections.
