2015-2016 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Keep your head up! Davis occasionally reaches out to students on a funny timeline (I know current students who interviewed late Feb and were accepted) and they do have a pretty set list of things they like to see in applicants (other than metrics). Are you IS or OOS?

Ugh I'm sorry if I sounded crazy. Anyway it's good to know all hope is not lost yet! I personally didn't know anyone who was on that timeline with secondaries so yeah I freaked out. I'm IS with a demonstrated interest in underserved populations (although not the rural underserved...so maybe that's why?) so I've been confused why I haven't received a secondary.

Davis isn't solely rural, so you should feel better about that. They also have the TEACH-MS program which is geared towards urban underserved and ACE PC(although these are for primary care specialties). Good luck!

I didn't apply for the Rural and didn't have experience with rural. Hope that helps. Pre-write it, I am sure you will get a secondary.

Hey everyone, I'm low key freaking out. I submitted my secondary a while ago but my committee letter is taking days to finish (still hasn't been submitted to AMCAS) and my secondary due date is tomorrow! Am I screwed out the wahzoo? Should I just take the L?

I would say go ahead and submit the secondary first and you can wait for the letter later. Davis did say that the deadline does not apply for LORs so I think you're good for now.

For everyone that is interviewing tomorrow, best of luck!!!!!

Davis is amazing and most importantly the people here are so warm and welcoming.

Enjoy the experience!

First II!!! No interview dates available though :/

Complete 8/5
Complete email 8/6
MSTP applicant

Did your interview invite specify for the PSTP too or was it just MD? There's that little blurb at the bottom that says specific tracks will contact the applicant separately but according to the website, its just one interview invite?

I've only gotten one interview invite. I saw the note in the email too, but I don't have any details about the MDPhD interview yet.

Does Davis do silent rejections? no secondary here but recent primary verified (8/18).

They're probably having a backlog right now so I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's still early to say anything...

To those of you who have received an interview - are you seeing any available interview dates? I've been checking consistently, but haven't had any luck since I received my invite (~2 weeks ago).

I checked every couple hours for about a week until I saw anything. I also called the office, and they told me when to expect new dates to show up, so that might help! Good luck!

I can't decide if this is worse than waiting for an interview at all... that's torture!

Okay thanks! I just called and they said they're already filled into December :x

Nooo, screening hold (interview waitlist) like 3 min ago. At least I'm not totally in the trash...

mind sharing when you were complete? I was complete 8/16 and haven't received a hold, rejection, or II.

I was complete 08.01 and still not a peep. It just says "Complete" on my portal.

Complete 8/25
Interview invite 9/14

First available date is Jan 8. Really? Is it worth calling to see if anything earlier opens up or is it pretty set in stone once you are signed up?

Complete 7/15 and still no secondary! I heard they sent out a bunch of secondaries at the start and then stopped because they had some computer malfunction? hopefully they start sending them out again

I wish I could call and ask what's up and why I haven't received one yet either but on the FAQs they specifically ask you not to call and ask about your status. -__-"

Wow, checked today and finally found an opening on Jan 29th. I think spots are filling up fast. =/

Is it really necessary to have a "neutral" expression in the photo we send in, or can I just use the smiling one I've sent to all my other schools?

Dress shirt + tie would be standard, but nobody is going to take note if you drop the tie. I'd say 60% won't notice if you were wearing a t-shirt. 20% won't notice if you aren't wearing a shirt.

In short: dress shirt +/- tie is fine. Well trimmed facial hair + hair cut and smiling.

I dunno. The example site they specifically link to IS the U.S. passport photo site.

I went with the smallest close-mouthed smile possible. Like the Buddha. At least that's what I would like them to think. *crosses fingers and panics*
I've got a big ol' grin in mine and I'm interviewing tomorrow, so don't sweat too much!

They say neutral expression, so just do that. From the photos I saw at my interview day, everyone had a neutral expression.

They put the photos onto stickers that you give the people at each station. The major thing is that you want to be able to match to your usual normal face.

Oh man, I hope the resolution is workable...they said a cell phone pic would be OK, but I've tried printing those before and it doesn't end well...

They're like an inch square so I'm sure your resolution will be perfect. 🙂

Haha, it's just I saw the printout of my application at my first interview (I used the same pic for all schools), and my interviewer and I actually sat there joking about how terrible the picture looked...it was basically a black blob with hair (and I'm a very pale person, that's how off it was) and they jokingly asked if that was me, since you couldn't even tell!

That was a last second printout, though, since they forgot to schedule my interview, so it's probably crummy formatting and printing for photo purposes.

Any rejections out yet? I'm pretty sure I am going to get one, so want to feed my neurotic side.

Anyone have an interview invite in January book their flights yet? Is it a bit too early? They didn't release their PSTP interview schedule yet but flights now are pretty good deal...
