2015-2016 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
IS, verified 6/23 and still no secondary (regular MD).

FWIW, I am a reapplicant and interiewed here two years ago, so hopefully(?) they're just moving very, very slowly this year...

I think it's a little less than 50% but the biggest cut of course is from secondary to II.
Really?

Because I've seen the same numbers over and over: ~8000 applicants, ~1500 secondaries, ~500 IIs. i.e. ~20% of all applicants get a secondary. ~33% of all secondaries get a II.

I think on the first page of this thread, @hellanutella shared the stats with us, where it was like 7500 applicants and 2500 secondaries. 500 II's.

Yup, these were the numbers I got during my interview day.

If I recall correctly, they increased the number of secondaries last year. During previous years it may have been 1500. 🙂 Not sure if they're keeping with the trend this year (or even sending out more?), but the screening process pre/post secondary is still pretty tight. Post-interview your chances get much, much better.

Once again, best of luck!

Verified June 23rd and still no secondary 🙁

Have you guys with no secondaries received any email communication from UCSF?

I don't have secondaries from UCI or UCSD either but both at least sent me emails to confirm they received my app. I haven't heard anything from UCSF (and yes, I confirmed I applied through AMCAS!)

As far as I know, UCSF does not send "app received" emails. (I haven't received a secondary or any emails either, but that's what I'm gathering from this thread.)

Curious. Do you think UCSF looks at Letter of Recs for the secondary screen?

Answered before but I don't believe they do. I received a secondary earlier this week before my committee letter was in!

anyone verified on or after July 1st out of state get a secondary yet?

Just got a secondary... I am considerably below their averages and burnt out on secondaries, but I am IS and since they screen pretty heavily, I guess I can fill this one out just in case haha.

Secondary received just now! UCSF is my biggest reach school and I had almost given up hope..OOS, verified 6/5.

From someone with a sub-70, it is interesting to observe the craze over just secondary invites in this thread. I'm freaking out over potential tejection at mid tier schools

If it really is a 20% shot from here, atleast its better than blackjack.

So I'm guessing that they are now sending secondaries in batches? Because I got the SS# request and I submitted to them on July 21 so....

Received today! Will try to get back in less than a week (but still haven't written the JMP prompts).

If UCSF gives me my secondary this week I will change my picture to whatever you want. It's the last one left. I just want to be done.
Whatever is not that demented Magikarp is fine lol. You can stay Magikarp is you want, idc

Anyone verified after 6/22 get a secondary yet?? I'm in that awkward state where I can't figure out if I want another secondary on top of the bajillion I still have left... But secretly I want one hahah

If you're not doing JMP/PRIME, this secondary is just a "do you have anything else to say" type. Super easy. I'd want one

I would like a secondary supplemental application from this school.

To my knowledge, UCSF, as with the majority of schools, does not. However, you will need to have all of your letters in before you are considered for an interview.

To address a recurring question from several posts:
You will most likely not be screened out based on GPA/MCAT alone unless they are abysmal and there is no sign of hope. The process is more holistic than you would think, as there are a few gems to be found in the pile of applications with "low" numbers. Even if your numbers aren't stellar, if you think your ECs are superb, don't give up your hope just yet!

General advice re: the UCSF secondary: Try to provide new information. Something that is not evident in the primary application. Maybe it is a new independent study you are taking on in your lab or a manuscript you just submitted for review.

General advice re: application process: Try not to get too caught up with all of yours peers talking about how they get a secondary/interview if you haven't. It'll only make you sad. If you get it, you get it. If you don't, you don't. On that note, try not to get attached to any one school. I obviously think UCSF is the best medical school in the world, but there are a number of other fantastic schools.

G'luck everyone!

I know there's not much point in worrying, but I can't help wondering why I didn't get a secondary yet (my stats are: 3.8 GPA, 40 MCAT, verified early in June).

I certainly don't feel entitled to one of course, but I would love to get one from UCSF!

Did UCSF send out secondaries to people who had taken the old MCAT prior to July 2014? I called admissions last year and they said something like they weren't going to accept old MCAT scores once they've aged a year...

I took the MCAT in 2013 and their website says they accept scores from 2013 to September 2015

Yep, I took my MCAT in June 2014

Valid for 2 years until submission (3 years until matriculation) unless otherwise mentioned by the school!
