2015-2016 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From what I remember, they don't take into consideration ITA emails.
Oh, ok thanks. Bummer. Is this inside scoop among current students or?

Edit: nvm, lots of prior year threads saying the same, that they just tell you to wait your turn. Bummer. Ah well they're gonna have an extra II spot if they invite me/can't see me in January! lol

Just got a secondary! Wasn't expecting one to come at all to be honest.

New to how UCSF does things, but why are they giving out secondaries so late? I know they're selective, but isn't this pretty late in the game to be giving secondaries?
Also is there a good secondary to interview ratio here?

Since I'm new to their application and process, can someone please explain to me how their MD/JMP/PRIME sections work. For instance, if you apply for any of the 3, but do not get selected by one of them to proceed to an interview, does that disqualify you from the others? I.e. is there a risk applying to all 3 ?

Also just received a secondary, so confused... anyone read last years thread to see if people who got these late secondaries actually got interviews? I will read later if no one else has.

I think ucsf interviews super late

Secondary finally received LOL complete around mid to end of July!!!

Admission to PRIME and/or JMP only happens after you've been admitted to UCSF. In other words, they won't consider your placement in the PRIME, JMP, or JMP-PRIME programs until after you've been offered admission to UCSF. So, there is no risk to applying for all three... It probably goes without saying, but you better have a good reason for wanting to be in PRIME and/or JMP (e.g., experience with, and commitment to, working in underserved communities for PRIME and/or preferring small, project-based learning of pre-clinical curriculum over traditional lecture format for JMP)

Congrats on the secondary invites, y'all! So happy we get a chance to let UCSF know more about us. There are interview days all the way up through the last week of February! My MS1 friends say a lot of the cool kids in their class were interviewed in February (assuming we get interview invites), so hope springs!

That seems contrary to what someone posted before.. I saw someone saying they were rejected UCSF, but considered for JMP.. or something to that effect.

Either way, I think I'll call admissions tomorrow and just clarify.. don't want to do anything that jeopardizes my chances - I could go into any of the programs, but my chances are better for regular and JMP than for PRIME given my background/experiences

Rejected yesterday pre-interview. Was complete the first week of November 🙂 Received a secondary invite late October. Obviously a super reach school, so I'm just as surprised as everyone else that I received a secondary invite. Good luck to everyone still in the running or with an interview in hand!

I also recall some getting rejected from regular but getting JMP IIs. Best to call and check! And post what you learn!

Person on the phone said they are in fact separate admissions after you select what you're interested in, and you could in theory be rejected from UCSF but get an II from JMP. Tried to ask how many secondaries they are giving out this year but she couldn't/wouldn't tell me, except that it is many more than last year.

Called the school today! They estimated that about 4-5000 secondaries were given out this year, which compares to about 1500 in the past. Also, they're interviewing through mid-March. After secondaries, each application goes through two more screens -- letter of rec are extremely important at this point -- before being selected for interview.

The same number of applicants are being interviewed, so that's about 4-500. If you've submitted a secondary, you now have a roughly 9-10% chance of interviewing, compared to 25-35% before.

Crazy. I'm guessing the school is in need of more $$$ after budget cuts from the California govt.

Obviously, I can't vouch for this but, yeah, word on the street seems to be that they're giving out way more secondaries this year and interviewing the same relatively small number of applicants.

I believe I have heard through the grapevine that in previous years they released secondaries to 1/3 the applicants, and this year they are aiming for 2/3 the applicant pool. I am not certain whether this is privileged information (though I don't believe so, as it came from an individual in the UCSF offices whom I do not know personally and I was not under the impression it was meant to be kept to myself). Peculiar that the office wouldn't just repeat the same info to you...

In either case, I suspected that the admissions to the programs was separate (which would be consistent with anecdotal data on here where some got rejected from one program but IIs to another), but it's nice to have confirmation!

Also, really happy for you bear, I know this is one of your top choices. Good luck! 🙂

Like me 🙂 I received a JMP interview and was rejected from UCSF in the same email, it was confusing at first.

Rejected just now, complete 8/6. Good luck to everyone still waiting for news!

Rejected yesterday as well. Interviewed here two years ago so this one stung quite a bit :/

II today!! I am out-of-state so I am excited to visit San Francisco for the first time!! I have heard great things about the city and school 🙂 looking forward to it!!

So if you get rejected from UCSF but get accepted into JMP that means that you will still technically get an MD from UCSF...but that it is mandatory that you do the JMP in order to get that degree. Getting accepted into both would mean that you have the option to do either. Right?

Yes you get to choose

ucsf seems to give out secondaries later than any school. do they interview later too or have we missed the bulk of slots already?

Earlier in the thread, someone said that they interview through mid-March. I can't find any info about interview timelines on their website. Can anyone confirm or deny?

They screen quite heavily it seems, so that's probably the reason why it takes longer or goes until later.

Got an II here for both programs a few days ago pretty excited. Find it hard to believe. 74ish lizzy and primary complete early aug.
Good luck everyone. It's still possible
Congrats!! What interview dates were available?

Rejected pre-secondary 🙁 crushed but also totally not surprised.

Just hot a secondary. Primary submitted on late June. Are they really interested in me, or they did not meet there $ quota and are sending secondaries to people like me and messing with my feelings ??

Maybe they just put all the "nontrads with interesting stories" in a pile to look at later and it has taken a while to go through them. At least, that is what I am telling myself. 😛
