2015-2016 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@thatwouldbeanarchy

1) Thank you!

2) Yes. It was a funny email. I started jumping out of my chair because the first paragraph was my II for JMP. Then, my eyes went to the second paragraph, which was my rejection from UCSF. Thank god for the JMP II or I may have started crying.

The first post-secondary UCSF rejections went to me and someone else with a JMP II. I don't know what that means in terms of how the programs co-release decisions and try to synch up their timelines, but for your sake I hope you are still in the running!

I see that it's possible to get accepted to JMP but rejected from UCSF MD. Is it possible to get accepted to PRIME but rejected to MD?

EDIT: Disregard. After rereading the email, I can see that applicants have to be accepted to UCSF before being considered for PRIME.

They said around Thanksgiving so I'm getting anxious...

Oh, spirits don't like asians?
It's a silent truth that medical schools have racial quotas for asians and we generally need higher numbers to be considered. In a vacuum, if 2 identical applicants (1 white, 1 asian) were considered, I bet the majority of the time the white student would get picked. Us asian students constantly have to deal with dispelling stereotypes and pidgeon-holing. It's been a countless number of times that someone assumed I'm becoming doctor b/c of my parents, or I'm just an academic robot, or I'm not interesting.

I'm not saying this is why I didn't get in, as I had plenty of weaknesses in my application too I'm sure. Just saying it is a factor that Asian-american applicants have to deal with

You had a 77 LizzyM, strong EC's, a few pubs, and went to an ivy league...so what could have been your weaknesses? What kind of numbers do you think they expect of AA's??

don't know if true, but kinda feels like it.

This is a conversation that could lead down a slippery slope, and I know is best served in it's own thread, but I wanted to share this data from AAMC so if people chose to share their qualitative opinions, there was quantitative data.

Total Applicants: 49,474
Total Matriculants: 20,343 (41%)

Asian
Female Applicants - 4,417
Female Matriculants - 1,917 (43%)
Male Applicants - 4,791
Male Matriculants - 1,899 (39.6%)
Total Applicants - 9,208
Total Matriculants - 3,816 (41.4%)

Black/African American
Female Applicants - 2,200
Female Matriculants - 712 (32.3%)
Male Applicants - 1,337
Male Matriculants - 515 (38.5%)
Total Applicants - 3,537
Total Matriculants - 1,227 (34.6%)

White
Female Applicants - 10,334
Female Matriculants - 4,831 (46.7%)
Male Applicants - 13,715
Male Matriculants - 5,778 (42.1%)
Total Applicants - 24,049
Total Matriculants - 10,609 (44.1%)

They said around Thanksgiving so I'm getting anxious...

They said "holidays," not Thanksgiving specifically, and as of this past Tuesday, no acceptances have been given for JMP. I was so excited that Thanksgiving had passed that I called :]

I know this conversation probably shouldn't continue in this thread, but I find the gender disparities /across/ races incredibly interesting. You have almost parity between male and females with Asians, significantly more females than males with blacks, and then significantly more males than females with whites. With this data it does suggest that white males have a tougher time getting in than their female counterparts.

I do hope AAMC uses this data when their developing their outreach strategies. It'd be an interesting task.

AAMC has 25 tables worth of data on the topic and I'm sure it gets distributed to all member colleges.

It gets even more interesting when you look at GPAs & MCAT scores of applicants and matriculants borken up by race/ethnicity. https://www.aamc.org/download/321498/data/factstable19.pdf

Rejected! Complete late September.

Not surprised with my LM of ~65. 🙁

To anyone who has interviewed here, would you mind sharing what the day was like? In particular, were the interviews in the morning or afternoon?

Thanks!

Thanks!

Day started early at ~8am. We then were introduced to Dean Wofsy (who was awesome btw), then given our packets and told how the day would go. Most people had at least one of the two interviews at a location other than the Parnassus campus and some left immediately at this point. Those that did not leave at that time sat in on a class and then went back to the first room to meet some 4th years that took us to lunch. After lunch, there was a fairly extensive tour. Both of my interviews were after the tour. The day was very relaxed and fun. I enjoyed seeing the campus and all of the students were very nice. The interviews were fairly relaxed.

To specifically answer your question about interviews: everyone's times are different. Both of mine were in the afternoon, while others had one in the morning and afternoon, and some had two fairly early interviews.

Are the regular MD and JMP programs receptive to post-interview updates? I interviewed the second week of November and would like to send an update if possible.

Is there a complete email sent post secondary? I submitted my secondary after receiving it a couple of weeks ago and don't know if I'm waiting for a complete email or a rejection email!

No, just the Secondary Submitted email.

Oh yeah. Like it says in your signature. Did you apply to a different dual program? I thought the regular MD just asked for any updates?

Ah -- yes, I applied JMP and PRIME... although realistically JMP is the better fit out of the two. That said, I'd be ecstatic with the regular MD program, and being older a 4 yr program might be nicer.

To those who interviewed already/current students:
I desperately want to return to CA for medical school...UCSF is my last chance of going back to CA (WL at SD and silence/rejections from all others). How "rolling" is UCSF? I have an II there in February for MD/PRIME. I want to enter the interview with a realistic outlook of my chances there.I will put my best foot forward regardless.

Thanks for your help.

A decent number of my classmates interviewed later in the cycle (Jan/Feb/etc.), so it's certainly possible to get in with a Feb interview.

BTW, Does UCSF provide all decisions at once (i.e. if you applied to all 3 programs, do you have to wait until they have all decided before you hear any decision back)? or does it come out as it's decided?

Rejected post secondary today, submitted secondary 3 weeks ago 🙁

and for my first post!.... rejected pre II today

Also rejected post-secondary/pre-II today 🙁. Best of luck to those still in the running

a little annoyed it took them over three months to send me a secondary and only three weeks to reject.... if you knew you didn't want me, why make me pay! rude
But not as rude as all of the other schools.?
