2015-2016 University of Colorado Application Thread

Anyone know post-interview acceptance rates? Super stoked to be interviewing as an OOS, but I'm still super nervous about my chances, and this is one of my top schools!

Congrats. Don't get too caught up in the acceptance rates, it'll drive you crazy. I know you're nervous but just enjoy the interview and be yourself. If they feel that you're a good fit, they'll accept you. Good luck and have fun!

Weighing in on the interview experience. I saw some people post on this thread that the interviews were very laid back. This was definitely not the case for me. My interviewers made it seem like there was a list of questions they had to ask and could hardly stray from that list. I'm not sure if they were trying to test me more than other interviewees or what. My point is that it might not be good to expect one interview style then discover that it's the opposite. I was definitely surprised.

I also had fairly scripted questions. My interviewers did make an effort to be nice and lighthearted but they told me they had to ask certain ones.

Finally withdrew from here today, had an interview scheduled in early December. Hopefully it goes to someone else who is waiting.

Best of luck!

I was wondering if colorado accepts updates? Like do I send them the update or through AMCAS?

Agreed. Both years I have interviewed here have felt like the interviewers wanted to me to poorly, as if they were looking for reasons to exclude me. Definitely the toughest interviews of the multiple schools I have been to over the last two years.
I would have to agree about this. Though the day as a whole was laid back and fantastic (everyone was incredibly welcoming), my interviews definitely did not seem as laid back as the rest of the day. Both of my interviewers said they had specific scripted questions to ask me, one just read through the questions and it didn't seem like they were really trying to get to know me. My other interviewer read my personal statement sentence to sentence, aloud, asking me questions and clarifications. They would additionally ask me questions, and look at me like I was crazy when I gave answer, and would question what I said. It felt like they was trying to make me question what I knew. At one point one even asked "Our healthcare system, good or bad?" and I replied with an answer in the middle, and they told me I had to pick "good" or "bad". It definitely seemed like they were trying to put the pressure on.

Dear all,

I will preface this novel-post hybrid with "I was accepted into CUSOM last week, and will be matriculating here in 2016." Now that I may have your attention, please take everything I'm about to say with a grain of salt. Oh the irony.

I have never posted here. I used to follow this website (earlier this year) until I realized that it was more stressful to me than beneficial. For this reason, this will be my first and last post. However, I will be available for personal messaging if you wish to contact me. I'm happy to help to the best of my ability!

To this end, I will attempt to share everything that trends among the SDN community, and perhaps everything you care to know about my life.

STATS (ughh): LM 72, in-state, non-traditional, 1st time applicant
Primary submitted: 6/2/15
Secondary Received: 7/29/15
Application Complete (processed): 8/10/15
Interview Invite: 9/14/15
Interviewed: 10/2/15
Accepted: 11/4/15

Possible voices in your head right now (many of which I have battled as well!):
"I'm excited this person is going to by my classmate next year!"
"Hopefully the writer isn't a boy, then I have better chances. Hmm, now that I think about it, what is the male to female ratio?"
"Darn I'm OOS with the same LM, might as well give up on this one."
"My LM was higher than his/hers AND I interviewed before him/her, but I haven't been accepted. My life is ruined, maybe I'll go into podiatry."
"My application has been complete for 6 weeks now, definitely not going to get an II."
"Wow this person is sooo well spoken, do I have to sound like him/her in my upcoming interview??"
"Uhh where's my secondary?"

Now, take a breath, and do your best to suppress the mind games. We're different people. Not knowing what's next is what makes life worth it and our future profession so rewarding. All you can do is be you, do your best, and hope for the best. We all will fail at times, and we all will triumph. There's no avoiding that - lean into it and enjoy the ride.

Try to relax through this process. If reading SDN is your way to relax, do it. If your heart skips a beat every time a new post is published, then maybe consider abstaining from it. You know you the best. SDN is truly a great resource, and it's an awesome way to connect (not compare) with and learn from like-minded individuals. As I said, take it's utility with a grain of salt, such as this post. You all are going to do awesome with whatever it is you do!

This happened to me at another school, where I got grilled on ethical questions and told where I went wrong for each one, and I was accepted to both programs with a personal phone call from the interviewer.... I think they probably like you enough that they were testing your mettle.....which in my view is a good thing 🙂 crossing my fingers for you Dr Acula

So, has anyone been able to retrieve the class of 2020 contract or contacted admissions about this? They still haven't updated the website. I will call today and ask what's up, I don't want to lose this acceptance on a technicality.

Does anyone know around when the next admissions acceptance decisions will be made/called?

When we interviewed two weeks ago they said that they'd meet either every other Friday or bi-monthly. Either way I think that means they met last Friday (and hopefully calling this week?) or will be meeting this Friday and calling next week. Only time will tell! 🙂

I am pretty sure they met last Friday.
The last time they had a meeting, they called the following Wednesday. So I would guess they would do the same this week.
Good luck!

Entresuspiros- Did you hear anything from the office by chance? I also have been watching the website and worrying about my 2 week deadline. Thanks!

I got an email from admissions saying to not worry about the contract until they update the website. I really wouldn't worry about it

Just got an II!!!!! SOO EXCITED!!

LM ~ 70; non-trad; complete a very long time ago

do you mind saying what date you were complete? I have similar stats and was complete in sept but haven't heard anything. Best of luck with your interview!

I looked on the portal and I submitted my secondary on 7/29 and they received payment on 8/24.

Is it impossible to obtain IS tuition if I don't have Colorado declared as my home state on AMCAS? Even if I have immediate family living in Colorado?

If accepted, could I defer a year and obtain IS by living in CO? Really excited about my II, but the OOS tuition is terrifying me.

Almost certainly no.

It's not about living in CO, it's about declaring residency for a full year. That means you either have to be claimed as a dependent or be working full-time. Although you'll be in the state, the main purpose is educational, not to increase the tax base.

Also a good thing to know is that the SOM has a different policy than other schools and the state of Colorado. You have to have have residency declared BEFORE they fill the class, which for some reason they define as the end of June.

This all or nothing approach to the tuition price for IS vs. OOS doesn't entirely make sense to me base on only one year of living in a state. I assume the point is to award those who have lived in the state and paid taxes or who had parents who paid taxes there. For me I lived in Colorado for 95% of my life and paid taxes there for 6 years and my parents have lived there for 40+ years. Yet, because I have lived in another state for a couple years I could somehow be responsible for $250,000 tuition vs. $145,000. Something doesn't add up there.

I understand your frustration, but it sounds like your situation is more grey than black and white. Where were you and what were you doing for the other 5%? Were you in school? Do you still consider your parents house your primary residence? Are you a dependent of them?

I'm asking rhetorically more than actually as these are the questions you need to answer.

While the situation is more grey it seems like the policy is black and white.

FYI- school for 1 year, work for the last 1.5+ years. technically an IL resident now. Haven't been a dependent for 4-5 years. Obviously I can't complain much because I get IL residency, but if we are talking taxes and family I'm far more a CO resident. Just seems like the process should be more individual based than an all or nothing scenario in my opinion.

CO is really strict on this. If you start your first year here as OOS - even if you BOUGHT a house and lived in it for a year, you are contracted to OOS tuition for all 4 years.

If it possible to declare CO as your home state if you have not filed taxes in other states (especially AFTER college). Many people leave CO to go to undergrad - and that actually doesn't make you an OOS. I heard 2 students who battled that and got IS tuition. If you worked in a different state after college... :/ Sorry.

Anyone know post-interview acceptance rates? Super stoked to be interviewing as an OOS, but I'm still super nervous about my chances, and this is one of my top schools!
My numbers are slightly outdated - but 1/3
Not sure if 1/3 is acceptance or matriculation.

Has anyone received calls this week? Super anxious waiting to hear...now that I think of it, my love for CU might be approaching unhealthy levels...

Nope. Just radio silence. I have no doubt the amount of times I refresh this page is unhealthy, especially considering it hasn't even been a week since I interviewed. CU got the best of us on interview day, that's for sure.

Did they speculate about the timeframe at your interview?

They said we could possibly hear back this week, and if not then in December or later. It sounded like they do decisions bi-monthly, but if you don't hear back you could still possibly be considered at later times.

So did nobody get a call this week?

If people did, they may not use SDN. Personally, I'd like to remain blissfully ignorant and pretend that no one got called, even if some did...

I thought that people would hear, given that they have adcom meetings at in the middle and at the end of each month. Maybe the calls will go out this afternoon? I got mine around 2pm MST.

There were quite a few of us at our interview date... it seems unlikely that nobody would have gotten called - here's to hoping they still have yet to call!

Perhaps they've decided to wait until next week?
