2015-2016 University of Colorado Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The last go round that I applied-in 2013 for the 2014 matriculation-I didn't receive an invite for an interview until mid-January and the interview was for mid-February. Try not to let your worries get the best of you! 🙂

Thank you, that helped me feel a bit better. I've been worried that my personal statement and/or my secondary may have got my application put in the shredder (I mentioned being gay and cuban in my secondary). I sure hope the admissions committee means everything they say about diversity and isn't just secretly using that "diversity" secondary as a ploy to pluck out the minorities ;-P lol jk... sorta.

I can assure you that diversity is highly valued in my class and there are several openly gay people in the school.

Hi all! I have an interview coming up this week, super excited!

I was wondering for those of you who interviewed, what kind of questions did they ask? High stress? Low stress?

Thanks! Good luck to everyone out there!

It varies. I got some softballs about my app but also got asked about the healthcare system. I definitely recommend being conversationally fluent in the ACA.

Hey guys! Does anyone know if there is an accepted student Facebook page? I tried searching for it, but didn't find anything. I'd love to socialize with my fellow (future) classmates!

From the previous year's thread, I think it was set up by the office of student life and current med students in Feb/March. I could be wrong though.

Hi all! I'm posting just because I used to check this page constantly, and nobody has posted yet that they made acceptance calls yesterday.

IS, LizzyM ~70, II 11/20, 2nd time applicant (top priority wait list last year)

Good luck to everybody on here🙂

Are you saying you got an acceptance call yesterday?

Hi guys,

This is my first post on SDN. I just wanted to let you all know that the admissions committee met within the last few days. I interviewed on November 20th and was accepted yesterday by a personal phone call. So, I hope this information is useful to those of you waiting to hear back, wondering if they have even evaluated your interview performance as a committee.

If you're planning on interviewing soon, my advise would be to relax and spend some time beforehand remembering why you truly want to be a physician. My interviews were both relaxed but you do need to display passion on your own, as I wasn't asked specifically "why do you want to be a doctor?" Don't waste your time learning intricacies of the affordable care act the night before - just be able to have a relatively informed discussion on it (this didn't even come up for me.) One other thing that helped me was to do some deep-breathing exercises around 30 minutes before my interview while a presentation was being given. This really helped me to relax and is super easy to do.

And remember that you are being evaluated until you finish both interviews. So, be social and engage with your fellow interviewees. This makes you seem like you would be a great class member. Plus, be sure to be formal with your interviewers. Address them as Dr. So and so or Mr./Ms. if they aren't doctors. I recall a fellow interviewee addressing her interviewer - who was at least 75 and gave an impression of traditionality - by his first name. I could tell he had already formed a negative opinion of her before they even got started!

If any of you are wondering about my stats, I'm an in-state re-applicant, 23 years old, with an MCAT of 32 and a 3.85 GPA. Remember that, if you've gotten an interview invite, they already believe you could be a student there. All you need to do is prove you can interact well with others in person and you're good to go! One of those spots is yours - if you want it, use your interviews to take it!

Congrats! Just so you know though, TOS require all posters to remain anonymous. Just a heads up 🙂

Again, congrats on getting in! It's a great feeling 😛

I just found an email in my junk mail saying something like :
Dear MerYangBey,
our records show that you haven't confirmed your interview for (specific date in January) please reply to this email to indicate whether you can attend or not.

Is this a real thing? I never received an interview invite. Also does this school assign applicants one interview day? Could this be a mistake or a very sophisticated spam mail?

I would check the application portal and see if you have an invite there. They only send one date, and if you need to change dates you have to request it.

Congratulations to those who were recently accepted!! Very much looking forward to having you as future classmates! Feel free to PM me if you'd like to chat :highfive:

Does anyone who interviewed more recently know when fall interviewees will know their status? I saw some things on here about December/January, but I also know from experience that it could more likely be March. Any input?

I interviewed on December 18 and they said that the earliest we could hear back would be their next adcom meeting which is January 8. If I remember correctly he said that's just the earliest, our app could still be passed on to a later meeting.

Do you guys think it's worth buying a $500 ticket to interview this week. Don't forget hotel expenses, etc.
I submitted my app in July and got an invite a couple days before Christmas... Can't help but feel that if I had a decent chance that I would have gotten an II way earlier. Also ticket prices went up for Christmas and New Years that's why I didn't buy earlier.

Everyone who wants your interview spot is going to tell you it's not worth it....

This is totally your call. What is this school worth to you and where does it rank? Are you set on your #1 choice already or is this still an open race. While $500 may seem like a big chuck of money out of your pocket today, what is it really in the long run?

What I can say is CU doesn't interview for the waitlist. If you have an interview you have a shot. Odds are probably slightly lower vs a September interview but you definitely have a chance.

I decided to go 😉.

Well folks, tomorrow is a big day for a lot of you. I bet it's one of the last times the admission committee needs to meet to fill up the entering class. From what I've read so far, mid-January may be the latest that they'll be sending out interview invites (probably only to fill cancellations), so my chances are pretty much zilch at this point. I'm slightly regretting making CU the only school I applied to...

I retract this statement... Interview Invite!!! 🙂 I'm ecstatic! This means I have a chance~! I've never been so excited for a chance at something.

Does anyone have any tips, secret intel, etc.? I'm going to spend this whole week preparing for my interview.

Congrats.

Tip: Don't spend the whole week prepping. You'll just psych yourself out.

Not sure if you're a guy or gal, but if you're a guy..... for the love of god where something other than a black suit! Not to get all fashion police here, but seriously, you look like you're going to a funeral when you where a black suit.

Personally, I don't think it matters what color suit you have. Like at all.
The interviews fly by, and I don't think the evaluator is at all concerned with whether you picked blue or black or grey. Just look nice, and don't be too bold with the color scheme (like an orange suit).

Good luck!

I wasn't saying that as any sort of interview advice. I know they don't care either. I'm just being a diva.

There's an adcom meeting today, right? Any chance we hear something?

Congrats!! What I've found to be most successful in my interviews is to just be genuine and sincere! Smile, be happy to be there!

If you're serious about spending whole week preparing for interview I read 2 interview prep books that i think helped a lot. they were of varying lengths (one super short takes like an hour to read, the other is like fairly lengthy look me like 2 days to get through reading it at night)

The short one:

The Medical School Interview: From Preparation to Thank You Notes: Empowering Advice to Help You Succeed

The long one:

The Medical School Interview: Winning Strategies from Admissions Faculty

Well I think it makes an impression even if they don't consciously care. If you appear very cold and serious as in a black suit, you are less likely to be treated warmly. Look up "power colors" for suits. There are certain combinations that make a good impression, others that do not. How big of a difference? Probably minimal. But I think it's still worth it...

They said we will hear next week at the earliest. It's contingent upon when the dean has time to make calls to those accepted. But hearing nothing next week is also possible.

this.. guys... different type of suits.. something that shows your personality.. stand out from other people instead of blending in

Unfortunately I don't have the money to invest in a suit :-(. I was a fee assistance, if that gives an idea of where I'm coming from haha. I have one pair of dress clothes that fit me and its a black dress shirt and black slacks. I have different color ties though. I'm hoping they don't think differently of me because of how I'm dressed, because they shouldn't. As long as they get the impression that I'm dressed to the best of my ability for the occasion I think I should be okay... I hope.

Thanks for the resources! I'll see if my library has them, or I might be able to get a PDF online.

Yikes. According to MSAR they offered 675 interviews last year so we're getting super close to that mark. Also a pretty substantial jump in the number of apps this year (~6200 last year).

While I do understand this I highly recommend putting aside $100 for a Macy's suit or even try thrift shopping. What you are describing WILL make you stick out like a sore thumb and not in a good way. The general expectation is that all interviewees wear a suit.

Any word on if/when acceptances might go out this week?
