2015-2016 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't even been immunised against Hep B, so I'm going to have to start that one from scratch. And I never got varicella, because I had chickenpox when I was 6. This is going to be such a pain to get done. Especially given that it can take 2+ months to get in to see my GP..

Just go to a Walgreens clinic. You should be in and out in about 15 mins if you go early enough on a weekday.

On another note, did anyone else apply for UMed? I applied a few days after my interview, got the confirmation that they received the application about a week after, and now I'm wondering if I should send an email saying I was, indeed, admitted? Does anyone know how frequently they have interviews for UMed? Much appreciated.

I believe the UMed interviews are on second look day.

For the blood tests themselves, or the Hep B immunisation?

Almost all school/travel related immunizations can be delivered at a Walgreens clinic. See the below link for more info:

https://www.walgreens.com/pharmacy/immunization/all_immunizations.jsp

Walgreens can also draw blood; however, it looks like they are under contract by region. If you go to Walgreens clinic for blood, make sure that the offsite diagnostic lab is covered by your insurance. See below link:

Nah, I just checked the portal occasionally:
"A final decision was made on your application on . Please allow two-weeks to receive the correspondence in the mail. If you do not receive this correspondence in two-weeks, please contact the Admissions Office. No decision will be given over the telephone."

There's no date so I'm not sure when it changed...

Yea I'm not sure what to think of the conversation I had with the lady over the phone. My status still says "applicant in process." The lady yesterday told me "looks like a decision was made on my application." Don't know if that meant an interview or a rejection. I called in today to ask for those who get interview invites, does their status change immediately. Was given a cold shoulder. What do you guys think? I know its leaning towards a rejection but some inkling of hope still remains since my portal status hasn't changed yet. I dunno! Ahhhhhhh!

They don't do the blood tests but they do offer hepatitis B and chicken pox vaccinations. The hepatitis B costs 89.99 per shot and its three shots total. The chicken pox vaccine costs 149.99 per shot and its two shots total. That's the cost without insurance though so if you have insurance it should be much cheaper.

I'm totally lost on the immunizations thing so help please?🙂 On the certified profile thing, are we just supposed to upload a pdf of our immunization record for each one? Isn't that repetitive since the record would show them all?

Yes, you have to upload your record for each one individually so I just used the same file for each one. Yes it is very repetitive but I guess that's how they do things lol

Interviewed 02/05 in Peoria. Status changed 02/22 to Final Decision + Additional Correspondance. Fat packet today. My first acceptance.
Guys, I have been relatively reserved throughout this process, both online and in my personal life, but I just want to say if you are struggling to keep the hope alive, keep going. It's not over until it's over. This is such a dehumanizing and at times irrational and often infuriating process. It may take a couple of months or even a couple of years, but if this is your passion, you will get there. Maintain your hunger.
Out of college for three years now, I have been working in an incredibly difficult blue collar job in the healthcare field these past two years. Every single day has been a challenge, but also a privilege. A privilege to interact with patients and staff directly and to learn about their amazing though often difficult lives. This is truly an amazing profession. I sincerely wish you all the best and fiercest of luck. I will finish with one of my favorite quotes by Susan Sontag:
"Do stuff, be clenched, curious, not waiting for inspiration’s shove or society’s kiss on your forehead. Pay attention, it’s all about paying attention. Attention is vitality, it connects you with others. It makes you eager, stay eager."

Does anyone know if post-interview rejection letters are sent at the same time as the acceptance packets?
When I called, the lady told me that I should expect something in the mail since a decision was reached but my portal still says 'Decision Pending' and I got nothing today in the mail. :/

Beautifully written. It will be a privilege to have you as a future classmate! Congratulations!

no idea, but if it makes you feel any better, i've been at decision pending since like oct-nov-ish

So do we assume we are rejected? This is the only school that hasn't made any kind of post-secondary decision.
I know somebody that was accepted in June 2 years ago so I am not assuming that I am rejected as of yet. I've seen many people get pre-secondary rejections so I still have hope 🙂

Does anyone know how many spots are left in the Chicago campus? Also, how filled up are the curricular programs at this point?

Just to be clear, the site preference card will be mailed to us in the coming weeks?

Same for me. I sent mine back in January, but haven't gotten a reply yet....
I just got my site preference in the mail today. I got my first choice (not Chicago), so I'm happy about that.

No such luck here, hopefully today🙂 But I don't want Chicago either so I have that going for me.

Anyone know how many weeks it takes for you to be notified of your campus?
Chicago is my number one choice based on where I want to practice, volunteer, etc., so in the event that I get placed at Urbana, would an appeals process (as hit-or-miss as they are) be able to take into account my background/motivation in working with populations in urban environments? Or is the appeal process mainly looking at convenience/personal/family reasons? I realize I'm getting way ahead of myself here.

It took me about a month to get back my campus assignment. I sent in my deposit and site preference card at the very beginning of January, and I received the letter notifying me of my site yesterday. I have no idea how many places Chicago has left, as I didn't select it at my first choice. You'd probably need to call the admissions office to find out exactly what they're looking for in the appeal process. I would imagine, though, that people with families or other such reasons would get preference over those who just prefer Chicago.

I believe appeals are more for family reasons/extenuating circumstances. However, you sound like you'd be a great fit for the UMED curricular program, from what I understand about it, and students accepted to UMED are automatically reassigned to the Chicago campus. Applications for UMED and other curricular programs are being accepted through March 14th.

Here's the link to UMED info and application: http://chicago.medicine.uic.edu/cms/One.aspx?portalId=506244&pageId=30503866

Thank you! Yes, I actually applied to this early February (before I was even accepted to the school) and got confirmation that they received my application a week later. I really hope I can get an interview with the UMed committee!

received my placement card today, interviewed back in december.
Got the M1 Urbana, M2-4 Rockford combo. I doubt any chicago spots are open. I won't be matriculating anyways so this spot will go to somebody else

Do I have to wait to see what my placement is to appeal to Chicago for family reasons? Also, does anyone know when UMED/IMED/etc. applicants will hear back for interviews?

I interviewed in early January at Peoria, but my app status has been "Decision Pending" since then. My gut feeling is that each passing month makes an acceptance less and less likely, and I do wonder what proportion of recent interviewees have been accepted/postponed/denied. It sounds like a bunch of others here are in a similar boat, and there isn't much to do other than wait and keep our fingers crossed during the next committee meeting. Here's to you guys and gals. :xf:

Called 2 weeks ago and they told me that a decision was made and to expect something in the mail. Called today and they told me that my decision was (once again for the billionth time (read:5th)) pushed to the end of this month. #UICpls 🙄

I'm a November kid with the same pending decision :highfive:

That sucks 🙁

At this point I am just praying that I get off the waitlist elsewhere...

Would you wait another year before reapplying? Or would you reapply starting this summer? I remember reading your posts when it came to the extended pending decision notice since I had a similar issue.
It seems so insane to have to potentially re-apply as soon as one finishes waiting for the full extent of time on a waitlist. Process is exhausting

I would consider doing a 1 year post bacc premed program to improve my gpa since it is a bit on the low end (3.6) but at the same time I feel like my app was the strongest that I could possibly make it for this cycle so it'd be difficult to significantly improve it for future cycles... Idk, if this is a door that's not meant to be open then it's futile for me to try to force it to open. Everything happens for a reason and there is no coincidence so for now I am going with the flow. Who knows, maybe God is putting me through the ultimate test of patience haha c: It's definitely a long and exhausting process but I'm not stressed because I know God's got my back. 😀
