2015-2016 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
These requirements were also there last cycle. They aren't new FYI.
I say "new" because a lot of schools are considering integrating behavioral sciences after the MCAT change (albeit at a more gradual pace). They may not necessarily be new for this school in this cycle, but they are new in terms of general premedical requirements.

hello all,

i just submitted my secondary on 7/28 and was wondering if that was considered late or not. also, would anyone have any idea as to how soon UIC tends to decide on interview statuses? i've been checking once a day and it's kind of busting my nerves. thanks for any replies!

Please refer to the bottom of this page to see the UIC College of Medicine timeline: http://medicine.uic.edu/cms/One.aspx?portalId=443021&pageId=19888504. Interviews are given from August-March.

I applied this past cycle, and I received an email about an interview about a month after submitting my secondary

Do you all think a Statistics course in Psychology would count as my second course in Pyschology?

It probably depends how it was listed at your University. If it's listed as a Psychology course, I would bet it's acceptable. However, if it is a math course, I wouldn't be positive.

My school had a two-semester sequence for majors: "Experimental Psychology I: Statistics" and "Experimental Psychology II: Methods". They both had course numbers in Psychology. In this case, I would say go for it.

On the other hand, I opted to take Statistics for the Life Sciences -- which double counted for Psychology and my hard science major. Its course number was listed under Applied and Computational Mathematical Sciences. In this case, my gut instinct would be no. I did not choose this class as my psychology pre-req. But, give the school a call. I know they are infamously unavailable for status checks, but should be pretty open in terms of general questions.

Did anyone else have their apostrophes turn into upside down question marks after submitting? I have seen in other school's threads that this can occur, but I had not experienced it until I submitted this one. :/

Edit: I pasted from Word to Notepad to the app FYI. So apparently Notepad is not enough to remove the incorrect formatting.

yea i believe there was a disclaimer in the supp app (i forget exactly where but i believe it may have been at the top of the first page) that stated copy and pasting would cause some data errors throughout the app. i actually ended up copy pasting then just changing the apostrophes and quotations back into the appropriate punctuation.

I saw that warning on the experiences page. I was assuming they were referring to formatting errors if you tried to copy paste from the amcas application. I typed those all in manually.

**REGARDING PSYCH/BEHAVIORAL PRE-REQS!**
I finally got to talk to admissions today on the phone and they DO NOT ACCEPT language courses to satisfy the cultural requirement HOWEVER if you have already graduated, then you are not required to take 2 courses that are from within the same field.

If you are unsure whether your courses satisfy the pre-req requirements, you can still submit the app with courses that you think would work and you can still be considered for interview & acceptance. After you are accepted, if your pre-reqs do not satisfy the requirements, you can take a summer course or online course to fulfill it, as long as it's completed before matriculation.

Hopefully this answers the questions a few of you had regarding this issue!

Thank you. I wish I had waited a couple more days to submit. I would have listed all three of my behavioral science courses that are from different departments. Oh well. At least if I get accepted I won't have to take another class.

I wonder if they will accept philosophy...
The guy I spoke with on the phone kept emphasizing a study of culture so philosophy might not count. I brought up an 'American Cultures' course I took that studied Native American interactions with Europe and he said that even that didn't sound like it would satisfy the requirement, but you can always put it down just in case 🙂

That's so bizarre. What you just described sounds more relevant than Econ...

Haha I know right? Their requirement seems very strange but if I can substitute with my AP Econ then I'm not complaining... just hoping that they'll honor my Native American culture course....

Any ideas from previous years when UIC starts sending out IIs?

I think they start sending them mid July. I got mine on July 20th and ended up submitting it on the 28th.
I'm also "applicant in process." Its nerve wracking, thinking it might change to "lol denied sorry"

When they ask about employment history during freshman year, sophomore year, etc., are you all only listing employment during the actual school year or are you including summer employment too?

Is the first status after primary is submitted "Process Complete Contact Admissions at..." for everyone?

They only want during the academic year

I personally included all employment, otherwise my hours wouldn't add up.

My current status is:
- - Recommendation(s): 4 received from AMCAS, expecting a total of 4, awaiting Admissions Officer letter review-

Does anyone know what this means? Should I call admissions?

I had three faculty letters.. This is terrible, but after 18 secondaries, I'm having trouble remembering this specific one.. Did we designate who are letters were from?

I called and asked what they wanted and they said to put employment hours for academic year only. Not sure if they care, you might want to let them know to be safe.

No, I submitted 7/29, the day after i received the secondary.. but letters are not populated with names as of today. Is this abnormal? how long did yours take?

I apologize if this has already been discussed here, but how optional is the "Educational Environment" question? I know there's sort of a spectrum of optional (from "truly optional" to "optional but strongly recommended"). Does anyone have a clue where UIC falls?

Are you talking about the diversity essay at the end?

Where are you all seeing these status' at? My status page just looks like this:

What does applicant in progress mean?

"Applicant in progress" generally means your requirements are in line but admissions is not currently looking at your app for interview. It will usually switch to "Applicant in process" when you are under consideration, but this can come and go as the committee reviews and re-reviews over the year.

Word of advice: I know that this is a stressful time with secondaries and initial interviews and so on, and status pages are tempting to check; but for schools like UICOM who send you a notice when your portal is ready with a decision (who doesn't do that? I think I've only heard of Drexel doing that from a friend, but I don't know if that's what they always do or what...weird), there's really no need to constantly go on them. Funnily enough, it was always when I stopped checking that the good news of interviews etc. came in 😛

The point being, it really only adds extra stress and takes time out from doing other more beneficial things, like studying / working / applying / whatever-it-is-you-do-ing. You can't control the process. The most you can really control at this point is how good your secondary is and how quickly you get it in; so if it's past that stage for you, just sit back for a bit, and maybe pat yourself on the back a bit for getting this far. 🙂

I have only received an email linking me to the status page.. No invitation to access the secondary. Should I have gotten another email for the secondary? Are they still deciding whether or not to send me one? My MCAT scores come in Saturday, so maybe that's a factor. Thoughts?

Is anyone applying to MSTP program? Do you get secondary application? I didn't and I'm bit worried. Thanks!

What do they mean by advantages? Did they mean to write disadvantages?

Also how does the campus assignment work? How many people end up in Chicago vs the more off the grid locations? I just assumed the school was in Chicago, didn't realize I could get stuck somewhere else if I were to get in and enroll.
