2015-2016 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
January.

If it's helpful to anyone, I submitted my secondary in August.
I got the secondary on like the last day of July, submitted early August, interviewed in February, still decision pending. It seems like there are far more people left on decision pending after the most recent meeting than usual.

They don't needto accept as many anymore. Simple as that

Yeah. They're definitely going to be pickier now that it's March. It's awfully discouraging; I thought that my interview went really well. Fellow "decision pending" people, what do you think our odds are at this point?

I'm 95% sure it's a waitlist for me, but at the same time, I've been decision pending for much longer than you

I think that if we get pushed off again in March, our odds will drop dramatically.

My Site Preference card and other materials were received a week ago and I just got my placement in the mail: UPR (Peoria). Does anyone have any input on how the appeal process works? Is it done by email?

I was told on my interview day that you could not appeal until final decisions are made on April 27th but I don't know how you would go about doing it.

Hello fellow members. So last week I made a post (top of page 35), about how I called into admissions and someone in admissions told me a "final decision" was made and I would hear what that is soon. Well, guess what?!?! That final decision was an INTERVIEW!!!! lol Sorry for the excitement but as someone on this thread said, NEVER GIVE UP HOPE!
Anyways, my interview is coming up in Peoria. I know there is a panel interview in Peoria vs the 3 one on one interviews in Chicago. I was hoping someone could fill me in on any interview day tips for the Peoria location along with questions they were asked. I would greatly appreciate your help!
Did you get the II by email or by mail? also, CONGRATS 🙂

I submitted my placement preferences a week ago and heard back yesterday. Surprised by quick that was and happy I got Chicago!
(January 29th interview)

I guess that answers the question about whether Chicago is full.

How long have you been "in progress"?

They put me complete early November. They had a problem with one of my letters, didn't tell me and I had to find out by calling. Should have been complete October due to MCAT.

Hi everyone,
I'm interviewing super late (3/25) and was wondering what my chances were? Am I interviewing for the waitlist? This is so incredibly late.

I am so grateful for this interview though as it's my first one. My mom and I literally both cried even though it doesn't mean much haha

Aww 🙂 UIC interviews very late so I doubt you're interviewing for the waitlist.

I absolutely cried when I got my first interview, just for the record.

I think that "interviewing for the waitlist" is a myth. Pretend that you are on an admissions committee. You have reviewed literally thousands of applications, conducted months of interviews, and made a lot of decisions about who would be best for the class. You already have a long waitlist for the upcoming year. Would it really make sense for them to go to the trouble of setting up a whole interview day if they knew they would just be rejecting you or putting you on a waitlist? I think that if you have an interview, you have a real chance!

However, I kindly request that you act like a complete fool in your interview so that I have a better chance of getting in 😉

Anyone have an idea for the location appeal process? Do we really have to wait until April 30th?!

Does anyone know if you can go from "Applicant in progress" straight to getting a rejected email or does the portal status absolutely change to "Applicant in process" before getting a rejection email?

I think you can get rejected from either. My friend got rejected from "applicant in progress."

I recently called admissions for other reasons, but the guy I spoke with mentioned they haven't started making a waitlist. The impression I got is that the waitlist won't be made until they're totally done interviewing, and I think they still interview a bit in April. Chances are worse this late in the year, but even if you're waitlisted, I've heard that UIC accepts more off the waitlist than other schools.

That said, I've a question of my own. Does anyone know the rough probability of being accepted from "Decision Pending" limbo this late in the cycle based on previous years' threads? I've been in limbo since January and am starting to seriously consider plans for next year (finding a better paying job, preparing to reapply, and prepping a plan B in case that doesn't work out either).

No idea what the probability is (I am in the same situation). But regardless of circumstances, if you don't have an acceptance at this point it is definitely appropriate to make gap year plans.

Is it common place for people to bring guests (parents, significant others, etc) to Chicago's second look? I found it interesting that there was an option to bring a guest and wanted to get a feel if that is something that people typically do? Thanks!

I feel like it would be weird to bring your parents, but an SO sounds like a good option- especially if they're moving with/for you, they might wanna see where you/they are spending the next four years!

For anyone who applied to GMED/UMED/IMED: are interviews for these programs scheduled on second look day? If you get an interview, are you asked to go to the Chicago site for second look, regardless of other site placements?

Pretty sure there's a silent waitlist lol, like there are silent rejections. I think they said no waitlist yet as a formality and legal safety. Rejections/admissions go out post-interview, and people who are left in decision pending are probably on that indefinite waitlist and then formally placed on it after interviews finish. Or maybe they're re-reviewed every meeting, who knows.

Then again, I am one of those stuck in decision pending and I'm jaded/biased/sad/terrified/wondering if I can flip burgers well. Cry with me brothers/sisters

I think applicants are *supposed* to be re-reviewed every meeting if a decision isn't made but idk if the adcoms actually have time to do that... I remember a few people mentioned that they received an email post-interview telling them that they would be held for spring consideration or whatever so I guess we're just in limbo rn...

Yeah there have been a few posts where people got an actual "hold" email where they would be reviewed after all the interviews. I'm guessing that just being in decision pending isn't as bad as that. I mean @Lannister has a 3.9 GPA and got an interview invite decades ago, and she's decision pending so we are in decent company.

applying to the UMed program just now...the day before its due. I doubt I'll get in since its so late but I couldn't resist; it is such an amazing program and will prepare me for EXACTLY what i hope to do in the future!

If nothing else, it will show them that you're serious about UIC.

Ha me too! And I must say, that #9 question kept me guessing on how to answer for a while....

I applied to the UMED program early this month and a week later became applicant in process. I hope that speeds up the application review lol.

Anyone who has already been accepted and applied to UMED or GMED hear anything back from those programs yet? I'm trying to figure out if it matters when you submit your application.

From what I understood you have to have an interview for UMED and the interviews are doing second look day in April. Not sure how it will work if you have not been accepted into the medical school or haven't even had an interview yet.

I also applied to UMed yesterday. As long as you submitted it before the deadline, I see no reason why you shouldn't be given just as much consideration as anyone else for an interview.

Just got my financial aid award. Hello 62,096 dollars in loans lol
Same here! I'm kind of sceptical that housing + food is supposed to be $14464. My total rent each month is just $400, and I spend maybe another $100 to $150 on gas/electric/trash/internet/etc.

Do you currently live in Chicago?
