2015-2016 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Soooo like, if I'm OOS and was completed 7/4 should I pretty much assume no II is coming?

For those who've already interviewed: when did they give you the tote bag? At the very beginning of the day, or after the interview portion was over? Just trying to plan my bag/purse situation. 😉

Is it a good idea to send a letter of interest to Umich at this time ?

Real talk, the fact that you haven't gotten an II makes me feel infinitely better...I was worried that I accidentally offended someone in my secondary or something...
Bah, I really shouldn't be used as a standard for anything. It's just not over till it's over! (Also, I have the same worries haha)

Withdrew from UMich yesterday, sad I won't make it to my interview day but best wishes to all who are applying!

Many applicants thank you for generously giving up an interview slot!!
Your MDAPPS is amazing, congrats on your many upcoming choices, then get some sleep (you must never sleep to be so accomplished)

Well, on the bright side, only 1 week left for new applications to come in.

Just upload it in your portal. Probably not going to change your outcome, but it makes you feel better to be doing something.

Thanks, I really appreciate the praise! And sleep sounds pretty great hahaha

Any comments about the interview day (e.g. closed vs open file, the MMI, the food, etc.), either from people who interviewed earlier or current M1s?

should i address it to the dean of admissions and make it look like a formal letter or just an update?
what should i include in the letter?
Thank you

So I have an II for MSTP and was wondering what is this Interview Confirmation Form with additional essays and this HIPPA form submission? What are the essays on?

"Please briefly describe your personal experience in a leadership position and the challenges that presented themselves in that position. "

"Please briefly describe your experience as part of a team and how you contributed to the success of that team and its goals."

Both are 250 words or less. Then there are opportunities to add application updates and explain poor grades or scores. The HIPAA submission involves reading a HIPAA training Powerpoint presentation and then uploading the certificate that you get afterwards. I'm also an MSTP applicant and didn't get these until a few days ago even though my invite was in early August. I hope I'm not penalized for not turning it in 4 weeks before my interview date since I wasn't given much time.

I would like to know this as well!

I replied to the address that sent the email (I got mine Thursday) and explained the situation and was told it shouldn't be problem!

They give it to you as soon as you arrive. And they also feed you breakfast, which I don't think is on the schedule.

I just interviewed yesterday, and I really enjoyed the whole experience. Everything was very well organized and they make an effort to make you feel comfortable. The two long-form interviews are open file, and I believe they had my grades and MCAT as well. My interviewers asked a lot of questions about my activities and personal statement. It was definitely a more conversational interview, and they talked a lot about themselves as well. The MMIs were super fun! 6 stations for 6 mins each, and none of the prompts were particularly challenging. The food was AMAZING. We were fed breakfast, lunch, and there was food at the end of the day, too. The tour was really cool, my group focused on surgery and we got to play with surgery simulation tools and learn basic suturing. Overall, I had a really great time! I hope UMich likes me as much as I like them 🙂

Any outright rejections here? Dead silence since I submitted first week of July. Assuming silent rejection.

Same. I haven't heard of any outright rejections. I'm assuming as we move further into fall they may start rejecting people. Or at least formally putting them on hold.

Does a 4-year curriculum map exist for this school?

Something like this: http://www.omed.pitt.edu/curriculum/overview.php

Couldn't seem to find one on the website.
They're changing their curriculum, so it just might not be posted. Clinical rotations will start in the 2nd half of M2 year, so more time for specialization during M3/M4. Normal/Abnormal organ systems will be taught together.

Yeah I saw that too but it looks like in the picture that they are going to 1-year preclinical eventually. But @lilyhgt suggests that it might be 1.5 preclinical for us?

At my interview I was told 1.5 years of preclinical. I don't know where that image is from, but it doesn't look exactly like what they showed to us.

HOLY MOLY!!!! So....I checked my email earlier and didn't notice anything huge (like from an xxxadminxxx sender)...so I just checked the email from AMCAS about the same old letter that has not come (-_-) and then checked here. I was about to ask if anyone actually could bring truth to this "Labor of Love" from UMich....but then my laptop died....

2 Hours later...I check my email again and was about to delete some junk mail (from Princeton review) and notice this random email from a Carol ...???Carol...

I GOT AN INVITE!!! I CANNOT BELIEVE IT>>> DREAM COME TRUE! ahhaha honestly this is so crazy! 😀

EDIT: LizzyM <65; Not sure where to check when I was completed/reviewed, sent secondaries/payment processed, etc. But it says sent: July 6th 4:14pm PST

EDIT2: OS 😛 forgot that too! No UMich ties at all!

I'm cheering for you out here.... this is the kind of story i would like too see 🙂
You would love it here! I have been working in the Hospital for about three years now and they do have the most amazing clinical's
Good Luck!! Hope you get in

I'm currently waiting on MCAT score and will be applying next cycle.

Talked to a med school student today. The new curriculum has been phased out with a 2 year pre-clinical calendar, but the next year will be only 1.5 years, leaving only a 5 week summer. Some M1's this year have expressed concern with this calendar since it leaves very few time to pursue opportunities such as intensive research etc so this could change. They're still guinea-piging the new system and lots could change from now until the next year.

Interesting...that's basically what I heard except for the 5 week summer part! I hope they can figure that out!

Been complete for months now. Nothing but silence. Am I to assume that I've been rejected?

They don't do mass rejections until Feb. Hang in there until then. They still have Dec, Jan and 1st week of Feb II to give out. The tracker should be updated next week, so you should be able to see what is left for OOS and IS Interviews available. At least U of M gives you some guide posts. Other schools are total mysteries.

I got rejected and I am still receiving the emails form Ms. Teener....thanks Michigan....haha
Wait, they already started sending out rejections?

Also, has anyone here submitted a pre-II update? If so, did you do upload on the portal or e-mail or both, and did you receive confirmation that they received it?

Before I got my interview, I did submit a pre-interview update through the portal. They acknowledged that they received it over email. So.....it could help.

Tracker updated as of 10/5/2015, winding down the Interview invites, especially for OOS.
