2015-2016 University of Southern California (Keck) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it bad that I am completely indignant about my rejection e-mail today? I mean, there is NO WAY anyone was cleverer than I was on the secondary. nm the fact that I am terribly underqualified to live in a community of attractive/smart people. But at least give me a chance to SHOW you that personally in an interview. </s> #sourgrapes

Hahaha
I'm sorry to hear that, but this post made my day

#sourgrapes for solidarity

Wow what an interview. Absolutely love this school. Let me in please 🙂

If any of you guys come from a diverse or multicultural community and are hesitant about applying, don't be. This school has got culture on lock. They do want the best of the best, but having a track record with the underprivileged is something the institution really takes into account and by extension wants to see in its student populous.

I have a monster MCAT, but a really crappy GPA that I thought would lock me out. There is still a floor to everything, but you truly miss all the shots you don't take.

Wow. Crazy turnaround time but congrats!
Well... their committee letter wasn't submitted until 8/31, and submitted the actual application like 7/10 so it's possible they were just waiting for the letters and then offered an II.

II just now! Complete yesterday, LizzyM 75
Not nice to freak people out by saying you got an interview a day after being complete without the back story, brah! <3

I mean I don't believe most schools read my app before letters were in...

I don't think they do either; I submitted everything the same morning and received an II later that afternoon. I think this adcom sometimes just picks out apps with good numbers, not that everyone with great stats gets looked at that quickly or that they aren't getting to others apps.

II today as well!

OOS LizzyM 75, complete on 7/16

The last couple of us have had similar LizzyMs so I wonder if we all had the same reviewer given the info from earlier in the thread...

Does anyone know what to bring on interview day? Could not find specifics

General consensus seems to suggest bringing one thing: your A game.

Anything else is optional and a matter of personal preference...but should be as minimal and professional as possible.

Gotcha. Thanks, looking forward to it

Here we go again with premeds "thinking" something about the application reviewing process. No one knows, brahs. I've heard AdCom members say they don't even know (not necessarily here).

Maybe we are all assigned a number when they get our AMCAS application. Maybe they take our AAMC number and divide it by how many testicles you have and then determine if it is an odd or even number and then put you in a "later" pile to review now.

I hate this application process.

Any USC Med students willing to chime in?

What is the best Airport to fly into for the Interview. It looks like LAX is 20 miles away while Burbank is 15 miles. Yet it seems like there is better transportation to/from LAX. I plan on getting the the night before and hence traffic may not be an issue coming in. I have to head out of LA after the interview, that evening and was wondering what the evening traffic is like to the different airports. The ease of getting out of LA is probably a big factor in choosing the Airport to fly into. Flying into Long Beach or Orang County Airports a good idea?

I'm not a med student, nor am I from LA, but let me take a stab at it.

From LAX, you can take a Flyaway bus to Union Station for $8. From there, you can Uber the last 2mi, take public transit, or if you get there in the morning there are weekday shuttles to the med school according to Keck's website

LA local here- Burbank is a smaller airport and certainly easier to navigate, not to mention deal with lines and getting to by car. LAX will certainly be easier to get to USC by public transit as Burbank is in the Valley. I would do what @mehc012 says and use the flyaway bus to union station then uber it.

I got an early interview here last year (was waitlisted). Haven't heard anything yet and complete early July. Their process seems random...but really hoping for a second chance!! I loved it last year.

May I ask how many interviews did you have last year?

Is it worth scheduling an interview a week later to avoid conflicting with work?
How much of a difference would a week really make?
I can get out of work easily if I needed to though...

You're probably on better footing at places you didn't interview at last year, so don't let USC get you down!

Edit: just saw that you have 5 IIs already...yeahhh, you're going to be just fine!

You're probably right.... buuuuut this is one of my top choices.

Thanks for the reassurance. Getting rejected from medical school sucks! This is all a very humbling process. I probably learned more about myself last year applying to and being rejected by medical school than in my 4 years of college (seriously)! Good luck everyone 🙂

don't give up hope guys, I got my first interviews today and thought like most of you that they passed over my app. I was complete like the 1st or 2nd week of July. Slots open are mid/late Oct

Congrats! Did you get an email or a phone call?

via email, and when I checked the portal afterward, it updated with an interview button option

*Wildly refreshes email.......*

Still radio silence from Keck over here, which I guess is a good thing since so many rejections have already come out? Just going crazy here seeing so many people with later completion dates get both interviews and rejections :dead:

Do you think radio silence = still deliberating or simply haven't reached our app yet? I'm getting all hopeful right now but maybe I shouldn't be..

Ah you were being PC in just picking later completion date. I go 'Gulp' when I see a lower LizzyM than me get an II but them I tell myself, three things. 1. The school hasn't rejected me as yet, 2. The people with lower LizzyM have a far better EC, and 3. The school just doesn't think I am a good fit for them. All valid reasons in the the way this whole process works 🙂

When I see a higher LizzyM then me get a Reject I wonder when the Ax is going to fall on me.

I'm trying to be optimistic in thinking that silence is a good thing because people who have submitted way after me with similar stats have already been rejected, but honestly, no one really knows. All I really know is that I'm just thankful to still technically be in the running for this school I've started growing more and more fond of as I've done more research about it.

This is why I am just spending the radio silence enjoying my tequila and wine and doing nothing and waiting until I receive an II from any school before I do anymore in depth research on them. In the case I do receive a rejection to a school, it will sting more if I have fallen in love with it. :arghh::arghh::arghh:

I prefer to be pleasantly surprised on how much I like a school 😉

I am starting to like @MissKitty2868 more and more 🙂

Rejected just now! Completed 7/20 !

Good luck for everyone!
