2016-2017 Florida State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was wondering, doesFSU takes notice of updates sent after primary applications? I am volunteering at a clinic that serves immigrant families and those without insurance at a lower cost than many places (in south florida) but I won't start until august. This is after my primary applications will be submitted. I didn't want to put that on my primary applications because I feel like that would be jumping the gun.

Yes, they accept updates. Also you're like 4 days out from August, by the time your primary is looked over by AMCAS and released to FSU, it'll probably be August and you'll already be volunteering. I would just put my anticipated start date thru present (i.e, August 2016 - Present).

Is their definition of "rural" having the R on your primary app? I would consider where I grew up to be rural, but I don't have the R...

so we have to pay the $30 fee before we can even start filling out the secondary?

additionally, has anyone's status gone past "application under review by office of admissions"?

@Saxappeal1 thanks a lot for taking the time to answer all of our questions! Do you know when II's will begin to be sent out for regular decision applicants?

On the travel, fun and diversion, etc. portions of the application is it implied that we talk about medical related activities as much as possible? Or are they trying to figure out if we have a social life outside of (pre-) medicine? This is confusing and I don't know which direction to take!!

flo-grown regular decision IIs usually go out around late August early September for those that applied quickly 🙂

Be human. Write about what's important to you. Not everything has to be about medicine. I think in mine I wrote about my love of the outdoors and trips associated with that, along with the travel aspect of going on a mission trip. I wrote very little about the mission trip itself (mainly just stated it's why I was in the area I went to in the first place) and focused on the "vacation" portion outside of the actual clinic.

No status as of yet. Submitted 7/20/2016. When did you guys start getting "application under review" statuses and when did you submit?

That seems odd. I submitted my secondary 7/28, and I was both complete and under review on 7/29.

Yeah it is odd. Just to make sure I'm looking at the correct thing- you're seeing this under "Review Status" correct? My last status is 7/20/2016 which says Secondary Application Received

Yep. Maybe they're missing a LOR or something. Maybe give them a call tomorrow.

I went to FSU and graduated with a 3.0 and did a masters in biomed (I'm not sure if this counts as a SMP because I've seen varying definitions of what an SMP is but my program has successful sent people to medical school and to FSU's COM as well). I got a 3.97 in my masters program (after reverting my academic pattern back to how I was when I first started at FSU). How does this look in regards to reinvention to FSU? I hear so many different opinions on grad school so I'm really not sure where I stand as a graduate student. I haven't gotten my MCAT scores back yet so I know that factors in as well.

From what I can tell, the admissions committee is forgiving to applicants who may have had some academic bumps or bruises along the way. I found the stats below in the forum for last year's application cycle. The user's name is @cjc78 and he was offered an acceptance after reapplying as an Early Decision applicant. Maybe you can privately message him for additional answers! I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck.

"In state, ED, MCAT 29 (P 9/V 10/B 10). I did a post-bac b/c I'm a non-traditional student (i.e. old 🙂 ) gpa 3.94 all science. Undergrad gpa too embarrassing to mention!"

Does anyone know the percentage of OOS applicants they accept/interview?

I have a 3.6 and a 504 mcat=28 old scale so I'm in their averages but I'm not sure whether to apply because I'm OOS

"The average GPA for the 2016 entering class was 3.7 and the average MCAT score was 28 or 505 for the MCAT2015 exam."

FSU accepted 2 OOS last year and 1 the year before.

Save your $30. Unless you have like, the best personal statement or your parent(s) went to FSUCOM

Ahh, the classic OOS question. Unless a) you have STRONG ties to Florida, b) you fit the mission statement EXACTLY and c) interview REALLY well, I wouldn't hold your breath :/

Can anyone possibly post the secondary questions? I want to start and I still haven't received mine. Also, what do you think my chances are if I am OOS but my dad has lived in Florida for 4 years and I have a lot of family down there?? Thanks 🙂

Hey guys. M2 here. Just checking in to tell you all to not get psyched out by other people. Sdn is a great resource but for those of you who check back here everyday, dont be intimidated by other people. Do you. 🙂

Another random piece of advice. For the question that asks about your hobbies, don't put volunteering. 😛

Hello @Gymnast123, I think that @Saxappeal1 mentioned some pretty solid criteria for any OOS applicant who is interested in this school. You do have familial ties to Florida, so that is definitely a start. The admissions committee likes to see that these ties are not bogus (e.g. I have plenty of family in California, but I have never even visited the state). Also, your application would be more persuading if your family was concentrated in the Florida Panhandle. I hope this is helpful!

I apologize if this has been asked already, I tried to go through the thread to make sure it wasn't. The FSU secondary questions have a 500 word limit, however I feel that I can sufficiently answer most of the questions in 200-300 words. Is this okay? Or will it look as though I didn't put a lot of effort into the answers (which I definitely have).

Some of the secondary questions warrant just a few sentences. However, you should have plenty enough to say about your Practice Vision and Self-Critical Essay.

Is anyone else in love with the fact that they ask so much about our families?

I agree with my learned colleague @Beachgoober . FSU COM wants to see that you have a balanced life. And they actually might ask about hobbies in the interview

Does anyone know when they start offering interviews to regular decision applicants?

I answered some with a sentence or two. My personal statement was probably 300 words. Keep in mind the admissions committee is reading alot of applications, so if you say what you need to say in a short and sweet manner you're not harming anyone.

I heard they start sending II out in September, not entirely sure but judging from how quiet this thread has been, I wouldn't worry too much

Last year II started sending out on 8/13 for ED, on 8/18 the year before. I assume that if interviews were going out anywhere, someone would post here, so they must be behind schedule from the prior years.

I agree ^ last year my friends who were ED heard back mid August so this year is strange that no one's heard back yet.
