2016-2017 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got a II last week, hadn't been near a computer to post this. I believe Gtown offers student hosts, so that's my plan!

II! Now I need to know a cheap and affordable place to stay... accommodation is looking pretty steep out on capital hill🙁

Capitol Hill isn't close. Try Rosslyn and Arlington if you can't find anything cheap in DC. Right across the bridge for Rosslyn, can metro/shuttle/uber.

Yah i was super late on all my applications...I hope that doesn't handicap me for other schools I have applied to

Just for everyone wondering...looks like last year GT started sending out rejections pretty consistently/liberally at the end of July, so at least last year they don't leave you "hanging" too much. Could be different this year since we haven't seen rejections yet that I'm aware of, so the moral is no one knows.

I've been complete since 7/4. Is it safe to say that I'm out of the running here?

You're definitely not out of the running yet. I feel your pain because there are a bunch of schools where I was complete early, and people have gotten invites and I have heard nothing yet. We just have to remember that it's still pretty early and some people are still waiting on their first IIs. It's hard to remain clear-headed when you see all the superstars getting IIs to multiple top 20s and what not, but it's good to keep some perspective knowing that SDN attracts a disproportionate amount of high achievers. I'm sure invites are coming your way soon if you haven't gotten any already. 🙂

This^^^
Remember, LizzyM says not to worry unless you don't have any IIs by Thanksgiving. This process takes a long time, and a school like Gtown probably already has upwards of 1k apps to look through

Hey guys, just started my secondary for georgetown..I am trying to learn more about their medical school and how to answer the essays. Are they looking for more on experiences within diverse communities or would they like to see more on the research experience side? For the first question about contribution to the community/bringing educational benefits to the student body is it better to focus on my experience with diverse communities and various public service experiences both locally and internationally OR focus more on my providing educational benefits because of my extensive research experience... or figure out how to mesh it all together in 1000 characters..

I think you should focus on whatever aspect that fits into your vision as a physician, whether it will be practicing medicine and conducting research/clinical research on the side, or serving underserved communities. Georgetown loves either one, but it's how you present your experiences and your interests that will show how passionate you are about medicine and what you see yourself doing in the next 10-15 years outside of just treating patients/doing a specialty...everyone at Georgetown that I've spoken to has unique visions and interests but it's their passion and commitment to be active members of society that makes them Georgetown Students.

I second this. Your personal goals and vision go A LONG WAY for this school!

For everyone trying to find housing look into AirBnB. My Airbnb for 3 nights (I wanna explore DC after my interview!) is around the same price as one night in a hotel and my Airbnb is significantly nicer and right next to campus.

Thank you. very helpful

for those of you looking for private places to stay for your interviews the days inn in arlington (about 10-15 min uber ride from med school and less than 10 mins from reagan airport) is only 93 bucks per night.

I am writing my secondary essay and second guessing it because 1. It's already august 15 2. My stats are not pretty (58 LizzyM) 3. It is $130

Anyone else on this boat?

Do you fit their mission?

I think so. I am working in research and I want to be a psychiatrist. They have GORGEOUS psychiatric research, and a lot of other mental health work that I am interested in doing (and have been doing on volunteer basis)

They do? Don't mean to derail the thread, but I'm really interested in psych and as I looked through their site I couldn't find anything. Mind sharing?

Thank you! 64 Lizzy. Non-trad. Had a low undergrad gpa unrelated to pre-med, but high post-bacc pre-med gpa.

Awesome! Same boat with the undergrad GPA and then really improved with a Masters degree so I'm hoping to hear soon!

Anyone on hold and then got a II? if so, how long after? i know it's probably useless to ask and compare because the way of adcoms will always be mysterious, but sometimes the neuroticism just has a mind of its own.

Was it an email or an update through the portal?

i feel your pain. it is so frustrating and seems unfair

I really do think y'all will hear good news soon. However, the cycle is not about 'who gets there first' but more so about whether you strike them as a good fit on that initial viewing. It's very likely that many schools like your application but are choosing to interview other candidates sooner due to that fit. If you continue viewing everything as completely linear, this process will only get worse.
