2016-2017 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
when people say complete does that mean secondary submitted?

It means the school has received all their materials (i.e., secondary, lors, transcripts, mcat, etc...)

Thanks! The week has been off to a good start, I'm still paranoid about my MCAT falling a tad below the 10th percentile at most of these schools that have sent me an interview so far 🤔

can I ask which other schools extended II's to you- given the below 10% tile stat for mcat? Are you are trad student?

Re-applicant since last year (only 1 DO interview). Current MD II's at TCMC, Penn State, SBU, Loyola

Probably a stupid question, but...When it says "To designate paragraphs, please double-space." Do they literally mean hit the space bar twice, or "enter" twice? (I realize this was previously asked, I just want to confirm.)

Also, in regards to LOR's... If I have the two science faculty letters, but my other letters are from experiences/jobs (but the writers are not faculty from my school) should I just not count any of them as the non-science faculty and just explain why I don't have it?

Any input is appreciated!

Press 'Enter'. At least that's what I did. I suppose you could also try to indent.

Oh wow. Were you given any feedback regarding your first application cycle? I am a non-trad applicant, 30, majored and work in business. Work full time- and volunteer/ no research in my experience. Very new to this process and I do not have a network of advisers from a school to tell me what I need to do- or what im doing well. If you can speak to what you did differently, that would be extremely helpful. I don't want to come April and feel completely lost if I'm unsuccessful this round- Id like to start managing this possibility and start preparing- even though i'm still filling out secondaries.

I didn't call schools for feedback, but I definitely knew what I was missing from my application. My MCAT was on the low side so I wrote the exam again. I applied late September last year because of a late committee letter, but I turned it around by applying the first day AMCAS opened and I submitted secondaries within 2 weeks of receipt. I have a strong research background so that might have worked in my favor. You definitely do not need research to get into medical school but it is highly recommended you have some sort of research exposure. In terms of volunteerism, it would be best if you can balance clinical and non-clinical volunteering (I had >1000 clinical hours but almost no non-clinical volunteer hours which puts me at a disadvantage for service based schools). My last piece of advice would be to make use of updates to schools that accept them (ie. publications, awards, new experiences, etc.) Good luck and be patient!

Quick question, which may be dumb. I submitted my secondary today and on the front page of the portal it says...

"We have received your secondary application, however, we are missing the necessary letter(s) to be uploaded to our system from AMCAS in order to complete your file. Please refer to your AMCAS application for more detailed information on their progress. If AMCAS is verifying receipt of all your letters, we should be receiving them with the next week."

I'm confused because all my Letters have been marked received by AMCAS. Am I missing something here? Or should I just wait a few days to see if anything changes regarding that message?

Believe it just takes a few days to process and update

Same thing happened to me, they were confused about a letter I canceled on AMCAS. A few minutes after I ended the call the status changed to under review.

The exact same thing happened to me, with a letter cancellation.

What's up with this person running around putting period-only posts into every other school thread?
Pretty sure this person is trying to subscribe to the threads. I've seen a bunch of people do this. He/she could just hit the subscribe button...

Did you get interviews last cycle? So your applications was not avail for review until late sept? Also- did they immediately reject your application or wait until March? trying to get an idea on when they update status- in general.

My application was not complete at most schools until the end of September. Rejections are school-dependent. Some schools rejected me shortly after receiving my app but some waited until the end of March or April to reject me. Some schools will not even update your application (Yes I'm looking at you LECOM! My application is still under review from last year on their portal). I applied really late to a few DO schools (December?) and got an interview in January. Long story short, each school does its own thing and all you can do is wait.

So, it doesn't look like much action has taken place yet? I've only see a couple of "II" posts so far. Heard great things about this school.

May I ask why people post "."?

A simple, "bump", would suffice and get your intention across.
Usually it's someone trying to delete a post. For instance, I did it myself earlier in this thread because I had contributed to someone's question and then later realized it was pretty much a verbatim of an answer that I gave on my secondary and I didn't want some troll to lift it off for their own application (it happens sometimes i'm told) and make it look like my work was plagiarized . So I edited my post and simply replaced it with a '.' since it can't actually be deleted.

Hey, I got an email (of course it sat in my SPAM folder for two days) inviting me for an interview. To schedule, the email says, log into your application. I log into my application, behold- no link or notification about an interview. Being Saturday, I cannot call obviously, but freaking out that I missed the window to sign up. Any insight?

I cannot imagine you only get a couple of day window to schedule your interview so I wouldn't think that. If your portal doesn't tell you you've been given an interview then is it still reading "under review"?

That is good to know, obviously I thought the worst!
Yes, still reading "under review" as it has since being completed.

Then I would sit tight! See if your portal updates within a couple days next week and if not I would call. Or call Monday if you're too worried! But for now I would just be happy about the II! Congrats 🙂

Congrats!! Mind sharing completion date/stats?

SS 7/22, received this update in portal:

"Your file is currently undergoing a review by our committee. Thank you for applying to Loyola University Chicago-Stritch School of Medicine."

Based on other replies, an interview invite may come in the next 2 weeks.

Sorry but I think the consensus is your status could say that for the next few months. I've had that for like 6 weeks. What did yours say before that?

Nothing, just that my secondary was submitted. When did you complete your secondary?
Weird... Last week in July and I don't remember NOT having this status haha

EDIT: it's also strange because I could be on hold, but they have a specific hold status...

That's just the automatic status you you get when you have a complete file.... the one about undergoing a review that is.

To my knowledge, I was not on hold for anything. All my docs and requirements were submitted and verified, it just updated this morning. So, yes... weird.

From lurking last year's thread it seemed that that was the status you had if they have not reviewed your file. After reviewing, you either get put on hold or you get an II. I could be wrong though, hopefully this gives some people peace of mind!

I just submitted my secondary app this past weekend. I live in rural Idaho and have a 3.77 gpa, 507 MCAT. I have loads of volunteer hours (non medical) and 100 hours shadowing. Very interested in rural medicine. Is my timing okay? Started to get nervous when I realized people have submitted secondaries up to two months ago. I really want to go to school here.

Earlier is always better, but that doesn't mean you don't have a chance! You submitted before the deadline, and if they really like you, they will choose you for a II!

do you guys think they will raise their mcat 2015 average? last year was 504 and im applying this cycle with a 504 so i'm curious as whether I am competitive or not for an II invite

I am pretty sure a 504 was their average applicant MCAT score while a 509 was their average matriculates' score.

It was actually the average for the matriculants, if I remember correctly from one of the pamphlets I received during my interview. I was pretty surprised to see that it was lower than that of their old MCAT.

i hope it gives me a shot for this cycle!

Do all applicants receive a secondary application or are they pre-screened?
Also, I know I asked this previously, but how favorable does coming from a Loyola undergrad look? The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to decide if I should continue with the secondaries this late in the game. I really don't want to waste money and time on schools I have no shot at this late in the cycle.
My new MCAT score is coming out October 12th, by the way, so I can't answer that question yet!

I believe it's not screened
