2016-2017 Southern Illinois University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am glad that you got accepted, congratulations! I was wondering if you had sent in some letters of recommendations, letters of intent or anything else? I was planning on sending in some things also. I have really loved SIU and it is my top choice for furthering my medical education so if there is anything I can do to increase my chances of acceptance this year, please feel to share. I will definitely attend if I am accepted also!
You're welcome to do so but it will NOT change you place on the AWPA list.

I am wonder if AWPA movement has already slowed down (or even started). Has anyone asked Beth recently?
From previous years' experience, people like to hold on to their spots until the last moment, so the movement on the list starts on/after April 30, with a few here and there beforehand. Keep in mind any new acceptance they send out, the recipient has ~2 weeks to respond as well, which can lead to a delay between further offers.

I have a question about finding an apartment for next year. Could anyone who's been through this process before tell me if June or July is too late to secure an apartment for August? Or any other information about how that process goes down?

Certainly not too late. Just be aware since it's a college student area some places will fill up faster than others. You will absolutely be able to find a place to live regardless of when you decide to sign a lease, but it may not be your first choice if you wait too long.

Some people go down in August with their moving truck and find an apartment to move in that day. Others go down early summer, find a place, and sign a lease to start in August. Most properties have websites you can check out beforehand. I went down with a few places in mind from online, toured them all, signed a lease with the place I liked and moved in before school in August.

Is anyone on this thread accepted into the MD/MPH joint degree program? Was accepted a while back but still undecided if I want to get my MPH degree right now.

For everyone still on the AWPA list, like myself. I hope you guys and gals are continuing to take care of yourself! For me, everyday is filled with so much anxiety, but I'm marching on! We're gonna get through this!

Fellow AWPA-ees! I hope your significant other is as supportive as mine!

Are there a decent number of students from Chicago accepted to SIU? Or is it southern ill dominant?

There is no available data on the number of applications/interviews/acceptances by region, so I can't provide a quantitative answer to your question. However, the general consensus based on applicant experience and matriculant data is that the better you are able to show that you are likely to eventually help serve the mission statement of the school, the better your chances. This would seem to favor central/southern IL applicants over Chicago applicants with no ties to central/southern IL.

Is there going to be a Facebook group for the incoming class? I'd like to have a roommate or two who are also med students but there's no way to reach out to anybody right now who may be interested as well.

A Facebook page was just created last week. You should have received an email with a link to the page. If you haven't yet, you might want to reach out to them. It also includes all the relevant information for the upcoming pre-orientation, housing, and orientation.

Interesting, thanks for the heads up. You got accepted a lot earlier than I did, so I'll wait a bit and see if it comes. I just got my deposit confirmation last week.

I'm thinking of taking a trip down to Carbondale for the first time ever this weekend to scope out the area and tour some of the apartments you guys mentioned earlier!

Hi everyone, I am actually planning to apply to SIU for the next cycle, so I apologize for possibly posting in the wrong forum.

I know a lot can change in a year, but with no budget in sight, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this recent article on the Illinois budget impasse and its effects on SIU: $2.2M more in budget cuts could be coming to SIU medical school.

I did read some previous comments about how the budget impasse doesn't seem to be affecting SIU very much but those were posted before this article, and this article makes me slightly concerned due to layoffs, physicians/surgeons resigning, pay cuts, etc. Just hoping for a little more clarification, considering I really like what SIU has to offer in terms of location, tuition, education, and other factors. Thanks!

I've got to say, I'm a little surprised at how little movement there has been so far this week.

Like I said before, it will most likely affect support / ancillary staff before it affects any educators as most educators are practicing physicians or retired physicians. SIU is extremely proud of their school and education. It will likely, from a student perspective, just change the people sending you e-mails.

For those of you in need of a little hope...I was just accepted today after TWO long, long years of waiting. TWO AWPA placements and a massive amount of anxiety. Stick with it and pray!
Congrats man! I'm in the same boat as you. What were your stats?

This is my second time on the AWPA list and I am feelig more anxious than last year but still staying positive! Elizabeth Heker just emailed me and said most of the movement happens AFTER the multiple acceptance deadline so there is still hope for everyone!

As a heads up, the current Facebook group is up for the entering class of 2021: Log into Facebook | Facebook
You must be accepted into the class for the admins to accept you. This is a great place to find roommates / ask questions before orientation.

So I won't be able to join it until I send in the deposit and this initial paperwork? I need to re-activate my FB!

If you really want to be on the group asap you may be able to call Beth and have her work something out for you

Anyone have any updates? Doesn't look like there were any sdn students accepted on traffic day last year.

I could be wrong but I would guess it isn't an immediate thing and it takes time to get everything in order and send out the acceptance

That would make sense. I've seen some other schools sending out quite a few acceptances today, but obviously every school is different.

It takes time. Usually a couple weeks after as again applicants have 2 weeks to decide after this point as well.

I just withdrew my acceptance to SIU. It was a very tough decision. SIU was my first acceptance and very close to my heart, but I will be matriculating elsewhere. This is a freaking amazing school and I hope that one of you beautiful people on the AWPA list can take my spot. Thanks SIU, you da bomb.

Perhaps me :angelic:

FYI, 57 in FB group currently, 4 admins and a bunch of upperclassmen so probably mid-high 40s in terms of incoming M1s. Congrats to those accepted and good luck to those still waiting.

Edit: ACCEPTED/RISING M1S: I highly recommend those who have been accepted and do not have (or have inactivated) a Facebook account get back online, at least until class starts. It's probably the easiest way to find a roommate (they have a spreadsheet going currently), and common questions are answered there by admins and upperclassmen. This is also useful during the year for hearing about and advertising volunteer opportunities, organizing class events, and probably most importantly because some more organized person usually posts reminders about upcoming deadlines that everyone has forgotten about. There should also eventually be an unofficial students-only class page (for obvious reasons).

Hi everyone, I've been lurking on this forum a while. I wanted to let you know that there is waitlist movement happening. I got accepted today. Beth says to expect movement throughout May! Good Luck.

Congrats! For those that are insane like myself, could you please post your stats?

I also received an acceptance Friday and am starting to look at at apartments in Carbondale, does anyone have any recommendations?
