2016-2017 University Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The science courses (3 semesters biology - 1 with lab, 1 semester biochemistry) must be finished by the time of application.

The behavioral science/psychology/sociology semester must be finished by the end of this December.

How will you know if our behavioral science will be done by December (I am currently enrolled in a psychology class that I will use to fill that prereq)? I submitted my primary, and am waiting for secondary. Am I to provide any sort of documentation for my proof of being enrolled in a behavioral sciences course?

How I felt when I received the secondary application...

Still hoping for the interview invite!

I emailed them about receiving a secondary and got a very terse one-liner about how they are still going through primary applications. By terse I mean no greeting, no signature, simply one sentence. I think some people got lucky and were automatically sent one by UNLV's system but they've since fixed it. Either that or they have someone who can review an app in 2 minutes and make a decision. I may be overthinking it, but that is the impression I get from all of the above posts and my personal experience.
Yeah same, here, I literally received the exact same one-liner. But it was signed.

If there is a question about your application you will be contacted. If you feel that the behavioral science class is the only element that might be preventing a secondary then you may send an explanatory email to [email protected]

@UNLV Medicine Hi, I forwarded AMCAS application to UNLV on October 31, 2016. I am a California resident and based on your website's information I meet the OOS criteria and the admission stats; however, I haven't received a secondary yet. I am wondering if the process for OOS students takes longer or should I contact the admission office?

I am from Cali and received a secondary.

Congrats! Do you mind sharing your stats?

if you read the UNLV medicine newsletter (def sign up) you'll realize stats aren't the only things they're looking for! They're really focusing on fit. I wouldn't worry too much about stats as long as you show you fit with the mission and have all the other attributes as well (good overall picture) you should be good 🙂

We are meeting with the College Net folks this afternoon to make sure this problem is addressed. Sorry for any difficulty.

Do you know if the problem was fixed? I'm also in the FAP and didnt see anything on my secondary indicating that a fee was waived. (I didn't know if that meant that everything was approved and the fee was waived)

OOS applicants are not guaranteed a secondary, even if they meet the minimum GPA/MCAT and course requirements. Many medical schools have established revenue streams from secondary application fees that are paid by individuals with no realistic chance of admission. We have decided not to go that route. The catch is that we could only make semi-educated guesses as to the depth and breadth of the IS and OOS applicant pools, so this is an evolving process as we get a handle on things. In short, no news is good news.

Is the secondary application an essay? Specific questions? Would love to get a start on this if II's are already being sent out!

It's been quite lately... Any more news from anyone about UNLV??

There's that AAMC meeting from the 11th to the 15th that they probably went to so it's been quiet for some other schools because of that as well.

I submitted my secondary earlier this week, but I just want to be sure. There were boxes in the secondary that were greyed out and cannot be filled out right? (i.e. AMCAS ID and AMCAS State of Residence). I'm second guessing myself! 🤔

Yeah, the data from AMCAS gets transferred onto your secondary.

Great article from the Las Vegas Sun! Everything I read gets me exponentially more excited about this school.

I'm OOS, but if I received an II from this school and got accepted, I'd definitely withdraw my applications to every other school I've applied to.

I feel like this school's mission fits what I want to do in health care.

@UNLV Medicine what are your thoughts on what competitive stats are going to be? I know many schools have thresholds for consideration, but most are 507 and up and 3.7 and up to be a strong candidate.

Everyone who receives a secondary is competitive. Our minimum thresholds for GPA and MCAT were chosen very deliberately, as they predict a high likelihood of unimpeded progress toward graduating in 4 years.

Has anyone OOS received an II invite? I submitted my secondary on 10/31 and haven't heard a thing...
I'm guessing they're probably super busy interviewing and accepting IS people first.

I received an II around Nov 8. Applying OOS but meet criteria for IS, so I'm not sure how they have grouped my application.

Watching this gets me hyped...

I know it's a long shot, but, as a first generation college graduate and a Latino, having the opportunity to come back close to home and help a community that needs more people like you would be a dream come true.

Hoping for an II soon!

So would the people that interviewed last week mind sharing your experience at the UNLV interviews? Any insights into what the school would be like, new timeline developments, interview formats, likes/dislikes, or how the whole process is coming along?

I interviewed on the 14th. The staff is incredibly friendly and down-to-earth. Nobody was pretentious or rude at any point, and the entire staff was clearly excited about the prospects of the school and having actual students to interview. Considering there is zero history and the building itself is still unfurnished, the staff had to paint a picture with their vision of the school, and they did so well enough that I barely realized I was touring a mostly-empty building.

They were able to thoroughly explain their internal debates and decision-making on things like cadaver-less anatomy, and show that they already had opportunities ready for future surgeons that needed the experience. They also talked a lot about how they really want an open discussion on what is best for the school and its students, e.g. the pros and cons of pass/fail versus high pass etc., and definitely will be looking at the first year’s advice for how to make the school as great as it can be. The staff really seemed genuine regarding the school’s message, as well. They really stayed on point regarding the value of improving healthcare in southern Nevada, and they are already reaching out and connecting deeply with the community.

For what it’s worth, my interviews ended up being largely friendly conversation despite the fact they essentially prepare you with the script, and I ended up liking my interviewers a lot. They're pretty on schedule with what they've planned: 700+ applicants so far, 300+ interviews planned, ~20 interviewees on the 14th.

Basically, everyone seemed friendly, genuine and excited, and the school seems prepared to become something great. I’ve been excited about the school for a long while, though, so maybe someone less biased can present you with some cons.

Thank you for the thorough review. Makes me even more excited about this school. Absolutely love how supportive the community seems to be of this school as well.

However I am not really thrilled to learn about the cadaverless anatomy class... I have used computer programs before to study anatomy and I feel like it just won't be the same as being able to see and bring everything together in person. Thoughts? Anybody else agree/disagree?

Wait 300 interviews for a 60 person class? 20% post interview acceptance??? I'm gonna go cry now
