2016-2017 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Under interview status (still has a red !), there is a new line that appeared today that says interview date (also red !). Does this line appear in everyone's status?
Mine has that too but still has the "red !" next to letters of reference and application complete. Does anyone else's still say "application has not been submitted" next to the letters of reference and application complete?

For you guys that received secondaries, did you initially get the "We perform a holistic review of all applicants and due to the volume of applications it may take until late February to complete the review of your application" email? I was just wondering if they only sent this to applicants they believe might not be that competitive and would rather review much later in the cycle. Thanks!

My status still says LOR not received. Not sure if I need to contact them, but it seems like other people have the same thing.

My secondary invite was the first communication I had with them, but I also was verified really really early in June. YMMV! 🙂

FYI guys, I emailed them through the app about my LORs and they updated them for me.

So if you're LORs are not showing up correctly I'd try emailing them.

Thanks for looking into this and letting us know. Hopefully we're not "pushed back" when it comes to reviewing our apps because of this.

For the employment section, would I check the "Academic Year" box if I worked year-round including the academic year, or does that box mean that I only worked during the academic year?

For the prerequisite section, are you guys only listing the bare minimum? I'm a science major so I could technically list all of my upper-div bio courses, but that would take way too much time. TIA

Hey so did you put activities like shadowing? I don't know how to list that.

How did you guys end up listing shadowing? I did most of it during school breaks so the hours/week were very variable.

Also, how should we be listing sports or other activities that we are apart of that don't fall under "school activities"

For the "person achievement" essay what do you guys think about me writing about becoming a leader of my volunteer organization?

I don't have a full year of community service with an underserved population. Does anyone know if this will be a significant issue for Irvine?

Anyone know if service have to be volunteer or does paid healthcare work count?

Probably not. You could probably list it under service or employment, but I assume that most would list it under the latter. Either way, your activity will be seen.

Thanks, but was specifically wondering about the 1 year service to underserved checkbox, not the activities list. I've worked in a number of critical access hospitals in rural underserved areas.

Ooh got it. I would assume volunteer, but I could be wrong.

Hope there's some movement soon, based off last year's thread it seems that they are slightly behind:whistle:

Did anyone else have trouble listing one of their activities under the provided categories? One of my most important experiences does not fit :/

One of the essays asks for "What personal accomplishment".

Do you think a first author publication would fit under this, or should I choose something else?

That would work. Definitely something to be proud of. I wrote about something along the same lines.

Has anyone not gotten the secondary yet? I'm IS, LizzyM 75, verified 6/14. I'm hoping they're still sending them out and this isn't some mysterious screen that I've failed :/

You're not the only one 🙂 I'm IS, verified 6/9, and still waiting too. Maybe they're just running late?

I didn't get that in the initial email, but after I submitted my secondary, I got the same message in the email saying my application is complete

I am visiting a couple medical schools in southern california next week (Mon-Wed), is there any medical student who is willing to give me like a tour of the campus and answer some of my questions? I realized just today that med school admissions are nothing like undergrad admissions where you can schedule group tours anytime you like. So I am requesting if anyone is willing to show me around for part of the day (30 min or so). I can pay you for your time!

Also advice: is visiting med schools before you've received a secondary or interview a good idea at all? I wanted to use my experience to craft my secondary if I get one...but would it be a waste of time?

My status says "Complete" online but I never got an email saying my application is complete...Does your status say the same thing?

IS, verified 7/26, secondary received 7/27, LM~72

Verified 7/12, received secondary 7/15 as first contact (IS)

For the question: "Have you participated in service to an underserved community/population for at least a year?" are we allowed or will it be looked down up to mention something we did in high school?

Have you done it continuously since high school? I would not if that is not the case.

Yes I just checked and my status says Complete. I submitted it only last week, so maybe the email was to tell me that they already have a lot of apps now, and it's just going to take super long to get to me.

Nope, it was just for about 1.5 years in high school. In which case I'll just mark that answer as a "no". Thanks!

I would do it if you did that and also serve in college. Maybe not in the same place but as long as you show continuous commitment. But if that was the only thing you had to show you serving the underserved, then I wouldn't.

Sooooooo if anyone is curious how they screen for secondaries I have a hunch it is not very holistic. I was verified 6/26 but just added UCI last night. They sent me a secondary this morning at 5:40 am. EST. No way they looked over my app. It must be stats... even though I fall well below their medians :/

Interesting. I wonder if they send them automatically for ~LizzyM 6_ - 7_ and then screen the rest??

I don't think so. About half of their applicants don't receive a secondary, with a majority of those applicants being IS with decent scores. I would think that the screen is automatic, but it involves more than just stats. Maybe they send them to people who satisfy certain AMCAS activity categories that fall under their mission?

Hi,

I wanted to ask. Under the Semester Hours when inputting the classes, did you the unit? i.e. "4.0" or did you calculate the total hours spend in class? 4 hours x 10 weeks = 40 hours.

Thank you!

For quarter/semester classes, I referred to my AMCAS verified app and copied the value listed under "Sem Hours" to the right.

I think so too. I was at work today and thought just this... maybe the computer screens for specific categories on the work/activities section.

I used the amcas quarter to semester conversion, which they listed in the Gpa calculation guide. E.g. 5 quarter credits = 3.3 semester, 2 quarter credits = 1.3 semester etc

Hmm I wonder why UCI is so delayed this year. There were 2 batches of II's based off last years thread plus some rejections by now...

Maybe they have more applications to sift through?

Maybe, but my guess is they've been having technical issues. I know they just changed over to the AMP system and were slightly delayed on the LOR's download, you would think they wouldn't be this delayed though:eyebrow:

Would it be worth calling them if I am IS and haven't received a secondary?

Not trying to be mean, but probably not. It won't get whoever is on the phone to give you one. It's a holistic screen so if you didn't get an automatic one, you might still get one later.
