2016-2017 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Non-science major here. I took two semesters of general biology and one semester of biochemistry (upper-division class). Can I count that biochem class as my third semester and 1 upper division biology course for the pre-reqs? The only other biology class I have to my name is human anatomy/physiology, which at my school was a 200-level course.

I also completed the full year of gen chem and organic chem for the chemistry requirements, but I'm not sure if I can also list my biochemistry class there as well. Any insight is much appreciated!

Congrats!! When were you complete/submit?

To tell the truth, I'm not sure. I submitted on 7/15, and all my letters were there at that time. The next time I checked was 7/28 and it was complete...but it could have been earlier for all I know.

Haha got it, yeah they had some issues with downloading letters, anyways congrats and hopefully you kill the interview! Hoping to hear soon from them myself

After application complete, do Under interview status and interview date lines appear in everyone's status?

Mine still says application incomplete even though I emailed the office and they said everything is complete... Their system is kinda buggy...

How long did it take UCI to receive your letters? I submitted 8/1, but they still haven't downloaded my letters...

Did they send you an email saying you were complete?

Did you ever get an answer for this? Kinda in the same boat as you...

Still haven't gotten the secondary, although on 7/15 I got the 'AMCAS application received' email. All my letters are in to AMCAS too. Should I contact Irvine and ask about the secondary?

I just called UCI, and they said that they were doing orientation for their med students currently, and that they were a bit backlogged on applications.

My letters of rec have not been received even though they were turned into AMCAS in June. Anyone else having this issue with just UCI? Has anyone talked to admissions about this?

ty!

Hey, dental15...I never got an email saying I was complete. After submitting the secondary on 7/15, I received an email the same day saying that they received my secondary, and it would be complete once the LORs were received. The next time I got any notice from them was the II. Good luck to you all.

Thanks for clarifying! Best of luck on your interview!

Hey, I e-mailed them weeks ago, and they said that they expected to download the letters "that week." I still have a bunch of red exclamation points, despite the fact that under "reference status" it says received. They're probably just backed up.

For the question: Have you participated in service to an underserved community/population for at least a year

Does this mean that each activity we list has to be done for at least 1 year? I ask because I started one of my activities pretty recently (~ 6 months ago) but it serves the same underserved community as another one of my another activities (2.5 years).

I'm guessing yes, but I just wanted to be sure.

"This essay is only for applicants that have already received their baccalaureate degree. Please clarify for the Admissions Committee your activities (school, work, and/or volunteer, travel, etc.) since receiving your undergraduate degree. You may list them in chronological order or you may incorporate them into an essay, stating why you chose particular activities."

Quick question. Does this mean that if we graduated this spring, we don't fill this out? Or are we supposed to talk about what we're planning to do this upcoming year? It feels kind of odd to only state the very few things I've done since I've graduated 2 months ago.

Generally if there is a gap >2 months between your graduation and matriuclation they want you discuss what you are doing or plan to do in your year off (other than work on your applications )

Oh alright, that's kinda what I figured. Thanks! 🙂

If you don't mind me asking, what are the available interview dates?

I can't access the dates anymore since I'm already scheduled, but from what I recall: 8/30, 9/20, 9/30. There were some October ones too I think.

Imo, you should still complete it since it'll be a full year until your actual matriculation. So in your case, talk about what you have been doing since graduation, especially noting anything ongoing that you intend on continuing into the next year.

Sounds good to me. If you are ever unsure call the admissions office, I have had good experiences so far with all of them.

Thanks for answering! Yeah, I called them about this and every activity you list must be done for at least a year. I ended up leaving it out. I'm sure they'll see it on my primary.

for the personal accomplishment essay do you guys think it's okay if i write about a submission of a first-author manuscript to a high ranked journal? I was hoping to hear back soon on its acceptance but I dont want to delay the submission of my secondary for that either

given UCI's research focus i am certain that will be highly valued. go for it

@Dr.Panda So edit to previous post: I contacted admissions again (second time) and this time it got fixed -- application complete! It's just frustrating because I submitted my secondary the day I received it from UCI (almost a month ago).

Late post but II on 8/3!! Stats: 513 MCAT, 5.78, CA resident. Secondary sent in 7/22

Wow I have no chance :/

I am rather certain that they heavily take into account ECs and the essays. It's worth mentioning that I did a lot of obesity prevention research in Latino communities in Los Angeles, helped run physician activity workshops in Spanish, and I speak Spanish. Since it is a Latino Community focused PRIME, I am certain those experiences helped way more than my numbers.

Did you apply to PRIME?

Read the post again aha

I bet your MCAT is from the old scale as well

Definitely envious of those who are OOS with secondaries/IIs... IS here with no secondary 🙁 Being a Californian is rough for this process. Going to move on from this school/this thread, good luck with the rest of the cycle, everyone!

Has anyone gotten a secondary later after receiving only a received application email?

I didn't get an email saying that UCI received my application, just an email with the secondary the day after my AMCAS was verified.

Does anyone know if UCI does yield protection with regards to high stats? I was told this would be a factor for not getting much consideration from certain schools. I'm in-state, with a 3.8-4.0 GPA and 40 MCAT.

I really want to go to this school (parent's house, close friends/family are all close by)!!

Probably not. There's at least one Lizzy m of 80 b being reported with an invite. I know they're really mission oriented. Meaning you need to match their mission to get in
