Do you all know if re-applicants are put into another pile? I am a re-applicant who interviewed last year. Its been over a month since my secondary was complete so I'm losing sleep over here. Should I just brace myself for a rejection?
I remember reading last year that reapplicants get sent to another pile

+1

I remember reading last year that reapplicants get sent to another pile

What does this mean? We will be scrutinized more? Reviewed later?

How long does it take to hear back after submitting secondary? I submitted mine on Aug 25th

Last year I submitted in September and got rejected in February. It could be two weeks or six months

By complete email, what do you mean? I have yet to receive anything other than an email explaining the application process

I guess complete email was the wrong terminology. I received an email basically saying thanks for applying to UNC SOM, and then it went on to explain pretty much how the application process would work there. I wouldn't sweat it if you haven't heard anything yet! I got that email over three weeks after I submitted everything!

Edit: I can't read lol. You probably got the same email I was talking about!

There is another pile (current MS1, was a reapplicant last year). They basically scrutinize reapplicants' files more extensively than first-timers to see what you've improved since the last time, if anything. So it usually takes longer to hear back either way. Personally, I had all my stuff submitted/complete/whatever by early July and didn't hear about the II till mid October, then interviewed in January. It's easier said than done but be patient, the reapplication process is just longer and silence definitely doesn't mean you're in for bad news!

Hey all,

Longtime lurker here. This place has helped me so much (and made me nervous in equal measures).

Got my II yesterday! OOS applicant!

Excited and jittery, its time to prep, prep, prep!

Congrats! What are your stats if you don't mind me asking?

URM
cGPA 3.6
sGPA 3.52
MCAT 502

Not the greatest undergrad stats but I have a Master's degree and a couple thousand hours of research and a couple thousand in consistent volunteering.

Good luck to you all! A current student told me that once you're in the interview here everyone is on fairly equal ground. So prep hard and prep early.

Hello!
I very rarely post on these but I would like to dispel this egregious rumor that seems to be circulating due to misinformed MS1 or MS2 students. You are absolutely NOT on "fairly equal ground" once you get an interview. UNC is one of the far more lax interview experiences and your application stats are still heavily considered post your interview in determining your acceptance. My husband was a medical student at UNC who served on the student board of admissions during the interview season. I don't mean to discourage you and congratulations on receiving an interview invite! However, I did want to make you aware that whoever told you this was speaking without accurate knowledge of the process and I've seen this same sentiment disseminated from previous years threads and it is simply inaccurate.

By 'fairly equal ground' I in no way meant to imply stats don't matter. However, it was someone involved in their admissions process that told me this when I asked. By 'this' I only meant to say that if your stats didn't prevent you from getting an interview and you impress on the interview, that you have a shot.

UNC values all parts of the application. People with stats lower than my own do regularly make it through and the interview (plus ECs, etc.) plays a part in that.

Thanks for the comment!

I had my interview. It was not stressful at all! Dr. Bashford is hilarious! There were no "got you" questions. They just ask you to explain the parts of your application they didn't understand. I believe today is the second day of interviews for them! LizzyM 71 complete Aug. 1.

I would have to respectfully disagree. The interview is more of a preventive measure for UNC to make sure students don't have a glaring personality error rather than a tool used to further you in your application. If a student with lower scores has a stellar interview and is compared with a student of higher scores with a mediocre one, it has been my experience seeing the student with higher scores chosen over the student with lower ones. You are absolutely correct that UNC values experiences and other extracurriculars. That is certainly true and students with lower scores have been accepted due to that reason. But the interview itself as a diagnostic tool is weighed very little. Hence the very lax atmosphere of the interview. It is also quite uncommon that students with "lower scores" than you make it through "regularly." Again, just trying to provide insight into a process that I am quite familiar with. Dr. Chesnutt also regularly meets with students who were denied post-interview and has expressed similar sentiments if UNC faculty would be more credible than a random person on SDN.

II just now! First one of the season. Top choice by far so absolutely pumped. LizzyM 71-72. IS. Complete 7/14. Non traditional.

I think that covers all the questions others may ask. Congrats to those who got one and good luck to those still waiting!!

Is there a way to check that your application is complete? The page that says "Application Status" doesn't actually say anything like "complete" or "incomplete"

Nope, unfortunately there isn't any way to know via the portal, and they never sent out a complete email. I'd call the office if you're concerned.

This post-interview waiting game is brutal 🙁
First acceptances go out Oct 15?
