2016-2017 Western Michigan University (Stryker) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got the axe. I'm starting to think that the only caveat to applying early to schools is that you will likely hear of rejections much earlier. Anyways, an organized and interesting school, good luck to all of you in the running!

Damn I'm sorry. Would you mind sharing stats? How far along were you in the process?

I was waiting for the phone interview phase to come because my file was reviewed. My stats are average, nothing that will have ppl jump over. I don't have much ties to western but the school is doing an excellent job with training. It is just one school out of the handful I applied but hearing an ultimate response has taught me to update schools about my current activities and accomplishments. Either way, I was going to hear from it now or till the end of march. Atleast I know earlier.

So I just got a call from a number from Kalamazoo, MI. Didn't answer as I am at work. Has admissions called for any particular reason instead of emailing? I have yet to be offered a phone interview.

Very true, but what else would you have updated them with though?

Being that I am nontrad, I was waiting on a job to add in light of new credentials I have obtained to seem more qualified in healthcare. But I must add that the 12-14 schools I've applied to are very community oriented so it is easier to lose interest in an applicant who is not of the same community structure or activity, though in recent years competition has increased heavily for admissions so I know it can be a number of different reasons. Now if the other schools will just see me as a special snowflake, that would make my day, especially with all the practice I've been doing in front of the mirror for the future 😀.

Hey! I will be flying into Grand Rapids around 7 pm on 10/6 for an interview on 10/07. Is anyone else traveling around this same time and willing to split a rental care/Uber? I'm running into some snags travel-wise, so any help would be appreciated 🙂

I'm interviewing the same day but flying straight into the zoo. see you on 10/7 though 🙂

Do they offer phone interviews by email or do they call to schedule?

Just got done with the phone interview, took 21 mins with intro and conclusion. A few of the questions definitely caught me off guard. And of course I thought of better answers once I got done :/ well only time will tell!

I felt the same way that you did.

Does anyone know what a structured interview is? Is that supposed to be similar to an MMI?

Well that gives me hope since got you an on-campus II! Good luck!

So there's no way to send an update about your app?

my experiences review started on 9/28, how long should i wait for a potential phone interview?

Experience review will be completed within 2 weeks. After that you are open for a phone interview until the end of the cycle

How did the first round of on campus interviews go yesterday? For anyone who interviewed, how was the experience?

We were made to sign a document not to mention any specifics. So I'll be really general. The campus is absolutely stunning, very high tech and modern. It looks even better in person than it did on the site (and it already looked amazing online). Everyone was super nice, and really chill. They genuinely seemed to care about their students, and the students we got to interact with all had good things to say. The admins give you so much valuable and detailed information about the school, and are really honest about what they're trying to achieve and where they see themselves . Since some care about this, the lunch was delicious. The interviews were low stress imo. My fellow interviewees were also really friendly, which made me feel less nervous. If you love the school and know yourself and what you want, I think you'll be fine with the interview day, kind of like at any other school.

Anyone interviewing 10/14 and want to split a hotel room? Pm me!

Very laid back. Being a new medical school, everything is new and clean.

Any more advice on how to prep for this interview?? Thanks!

Prior to my experience review being complete

Also, does anybody have any idea what the acceptance rate is post-II? I know they are aiming for a class of 84 and are interviewing 420 (=20% matriculation). Obviously they have to accept more than this to fill a class.. Anyone have any insight?

Just found out that not everyone moves into the experiences review portion of the application process

The going knowledge on SDN is that if you dont win the nobel prize dont bother them with an update. I too have wondered about updating the schools with my recent accomplishments. However, I will play the wait game let the cards fall where they may. Maintaining some zen about this process is the only way to stay sane until you get that first Acceptance or II.

Most schools accept 2-3x more than their class size.
It depends. Some schools do, others that dont. UMich just sends out 1.2 acceptances for its IS class and there is little to no movement off the waitlist.

Yeah that's why I was curious if anyone has an idea about WMed. I am guessing it is in between 2-3 since it is a new school

They have a decent MCAT median. I wonder if they offer scholarships. They also have a very interesting curriculum.

Yeah curriculum is really interesting... I'm not sure if I like the whole Step 1 thing during M3, but interested to hear about it at the interview

Any students want to weigh in on the pros/cons of the curriculum? @WMed UpToDate

Overall, though, I think the first 2 years prepared me well. I'll let you know how I feel about Step 1 after I take it.
