Can any current students comment on when first year and second year begins/ends (like month wise)? Need to know for apartment lease terms and I would really appreciate help with this!

Did anybody hear anything today? I don't see an update in the portal for me and I didn't get any emails.

Anyone hear anything so far? I wonder if they’re going to send an announcement to keep us in the loop about delays.

EDIT: Got an email & waitlisted 🙁

Placed on hold. Is there a chance to be moved to waitlist?

Placed on hold via email this morning. Doesn’t that mean they basically haven’t finished reviewing you so who knows? I wonder when the next adcom meeting is....

Yeah, it could still mean a waitlist or an acceptance. They definitely get back to everyone who is on hold by the end of April. Adcom will probably have their next meeting in early to mid-April. You'll know where you stand for sure by the end of next month.

Hi, I've found this forum really helpful so wanted to create an account to post my data point.

I'm a Canadian applicant who just received an acceptance to CMU for the class of 2022. Submitted my secondary Aug. 15, 2017, received an interview Nov. 20th, and interviewed Jan. 19, 2018. After that I was put on hold on Feb. 7th, which went directly to acceptance (i.e., no waitlist) today.

Hope the info is helpful to others applying.

Does anyone know what second look weekend consists of? I know its April 12-13 this year, but I really don't know if I can make it due to family obligations - but I will definitely be attending CMU COM in the fall. So I guess i'd like to know what will be going on during SLW, if it reflects poorly on me for maybe not going, and if I need to contact the admissions office and excuse myself if I am indeed not able to attend.

Usually it’s a deeper look at the curriculum, financial options and costs, more perspectives from current students, a look at the campus, opportunities to talk to current profs and maybe the dean...

I’m sure it’s OK if you can’t attend. You may be able to have them send you any printed materials they hand out that day if you ask. It won’t reflect poorly on you if you’re unable to attend.

Also, welcome to CMed!!

First things first: welcome to CMED! We are thrilled to have you!

I was one of the student hosts for Second Look Day in Mt. Pleasant last year, and will be hosting again this year. Second Look Day is an optional event at which they discuss things like class organization, small groups, SIGs, and financial aid. (I found out about my scholarship program while at Second Look, for example.) The first day is entirely hosted in Saginaw, and you tour the clinical education facilities and the sim lab; the second day is in Mt. Pleasant and covers the pre-clinical curriculum. You also have the option to go to dinner with current students and learn more about CMED behind the scenes.

You don’t have to submit a written excuse and it does not reflect poorly upon you for declining the invitation, but if you can make it work, Second Look is a lot of fun and a great opportunity to see our school in a bit more depth than you get on interview Friday.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Usually the email goes out a couple of weeks before Second Look. Look for it to arrive this week or next. (Also note, the M2s are currently on spring break and OSA is just recovering from the craziness of Match Week, so I wouldn't be surprised if things are a touch delayed.)

Speaking of match, does anyone know what the match rate was this year? I heard it was close to 100%

Wondering if the fact that this second class almost fully matched would mean that the medical school is 'fully accredited' now? If not, when will they know by, and is there a chance that it will not be fully accredited? I know someone on this thread said earlier this year that the school was in the 'final stage' of accreditation - have there been any updates? I am seriously considering CMED as my first option but don't know what to make of all of this.

@Traumahawk may have a good reply for this... 🙂

Thanks, @star.buck ! Spring Break was indeed a well-deserved and much needed respite before we all go into the diving bell that is Step 1 prep. :bookworm::writer: Hopefully all of you have had a good week as well!

To answer @coolinit25 's question about accreditation, CMED is currently provisionally accredited. (This is an accepted status for scholarships and the like, including military scholarships - you won't get dinged on an application for being at a new school versus an established school.) We have had our final inspection from the LCME and are waiting on results. We won't get those results till June, but everything we have heard from CMED administration indicates that we will be fully accredited. The only thing that's in doubt is for how long our accreditation will be good for - whether they'll give us the full 8-year period versus a shorter re-evaluation cycle (anywhere from 3-6 years). Since we've turned over a lot of faculty and we're making a lot of changes to curricula, it's a bit more likely that we will get the shorter period because LCME will want to come back and see if what we did is helping.

Hopefully this information is some help to you. Best of luck, and we hope to see you here soon!

Question for any M1s or M2s at CMU, where are the best places to live as a medical student. Every place I have looked at seems to be crawling with undergrads who are in the party phase, and I would like something slightly more low-key

Check out the Health Professions apartments! They are exclusively for CMED students and are away from all the undergrad housing areas. Plus, it’s like a mile away from the COM.

There’s a lot of good places to the east and north of the med school, I’d suggest avoiding most places south of the main campus, as well as the larger complexes.

This year there are many complaints from my fellow classmates about the noise levels in the health professions building, it’s a good place for community and is updated and a great size for the price... but don’t move there counting on an always quiet location.

Stonecrest is nice, expensive, but luxury style. Woodside is a good option, quadplexes with in unit laundry, central air, and nice sized. Oakridge is also nice, and kind of hidden, these are older but do have full size washer/dryers and are nice sized. Canterbury is all right, expensive in my opinion for the size and don’t have washer/dryer in unit.

There are also a number of current m2’s which will be moving out of graduate housing, so there will be spots open there this upcoming year.

Hope this helps!

Franklin Village is also a good option, it's right across the street from the health professions housing. Two bedroom units, so great for if you want a roommate or just a lot of space.
Country Place is owned by the same people who operate Stone Crest, more expensive but pet friendly and there's a pool.
Oxford Row is another good option with solid amenities.
You can also look on sites like apartments.com and zillow for independent properties in the downtown area, typically dated but private.

Is anybody out of state? It has just come to my attention that I will need to purchase my own private health care insurance, and I am not sure of any, and would love some feedback/advice

I want to offer a heads up to accepted students considering CMed, regarding the location changes in 3rd and 4th year. There is a chance for special considerations, granting students specific sites (Detroit, for example) without having to go through a lottery process which gives all students an equal chance at getting those sites.

However, special consideration criteria may change from year to year, depending on how many students request consideration, as well as how compelling the consideration is. For my year (graduating class of 2020), consideration was granted based on health needs of the student, children, and other considerations I am not aware of. A spouse with meaningful employment was NOT a granted consideration.

As I understand, during interview days there has been a bit of vagueness regarding this as well as a potential mis-information. There is no longer a “chip” process where you can weight your preferences, it’s more of a ranked lottery.

I hope this helps some people make decisions best for their lives and their education.

Hey everyone!

I interviewed Feb 23 and at the last Adcom meeting I was placed on hold. I know this means they haven’t looked at my application but I am still worried my application won’t be looked at. Giving that the last meeting is coming in April, I just assumed that they class might be full. Just wondering about my chances and if my application will actually be looked at! Anyways if anyone has any insight about this that would be awesome!

Hi,
If anyone went to second look, can you please let me know what you think of the CMED. I couldnt make it and I really want to know how you guys felt about it.

If anyone has any specific questions about CMed, curriculum, community, etc... feel free to send me a message. I just finished year 2, currently studying for Step 1, and have gone through the process of our CCC selection. I'm also a highly non-traditional, married, Michigan native student. I'd be happy to offer insight or assistance to questions you might have. Best wishes to everyone!

Same! I am one of the M2 ambassadors who attended the Second Look events. Please feel free to ask either of us on any questions you might have about CMED. We are happy to help!

Also happy to answer q's/offer my perspective as a current M1! Hope those who attended Second Look enjoyed it!
