2017-2018 University of Arizona - Tucson

CONGRATS ON THE II's!!!

I'm sorry for the spammy post in the school specific threads 🙁 - but I wanted to plug my interview invite tracker! If you haven't seen it, I'm compiling data on the current application cycle to reproduce planeblue's exercise (Planeblue's Interview Invite Tracker) and get some info on GPA/MCAT, IS/OOS, and URM/ORM for those receiving invites. Maybe we can use it to help future applicants build better school lists!

If you'd like to add info on your interview invite to UA-Tuscon and any others and haven't already, fill out the Google Form here - 2017/18 MD Interview Invite Tracker

You can find the responses and various summaries in my sig!

If you have already - a tremendous thanks to you!

Also, for those who haven't received an II yet - hang in there! It is still incredibly early and there are plenty more invites coming our way!

II for August 29!! OOS, reapplicant complete 07/13, my stats are nothing special GPA 3.6-3.8 MCAT 500-503 but I have tons of EC's. I am extremely excited!!!

Anyone from Tuscon have any advice on closest airport to school/cheap hotels?! I have two weeks to plan this lol

Only Tucson international airport here. A cheaper flight would be to Phoenix international and then taking a shuttle or a greyhound down to Tucson. If you're looking to save on hotels, we should be sending out a student host list (email the admissions department if you don't receive it).

Is our status supposed to say anything along the lines of "sent to screening" or "under review?" Mine only says "secondary application file complete" and it hasn't changed for weeks.

That's what it will say until you receive an interview hold or invite. I e-mailed them and asked that question.

More importantly, congrats on being at the beach!

Two good friends of mine are here on the west coast traveling from New York; I promised them I'd take a day off from work and apps to show them around. Needless to say, spending the day with them on the beach and receiving an interview with them around was absolute bliss 🙂.

I was wondering if anyone could possibly help clarify this questions for me, "Describe the effect that your experiences with engaging diversity have had on your own growth and development. Provide an example and describe how it will impact your career in the medical profession." I was not sure if it was like a kind of disguised diversity question or what exactly is it trying to ask for ?

I wouldn't say it's a disguised diversity question. They are looking for you to give examples of interacting with a diverse set of peoples (through volunteering or work) and how those interactions have altered your perspective/world view. For instance, if you worked with an underserved community and now you better understand the challenges this population experiences when accessing healthcare.

Would any current students on here mind sharing a few reasons why you picked U of A Tucson to be the school you would study medicine at rather than any others.

You will not see when you are being screened. We screen based on when your secondary was received. There's a waiting period for us to get them screened.

Anyone interviewing on Tuesday?! Getting excited! I'll be at the reception on Monday as well.

Just got this email, complete 7/16.

"We welcome your continued interest in the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson. Your application has completed the primary screening phase for an interview invitation. Our medical school is currently unable to invite you to interview. However, we have determined that you are a competitive candidate and you will continue to be considered during this application cycle."

Do they reject people pre-II or is it just the hold email? Meaning this: "We welcome your continued interest in the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson. Your application has completed the primary screening phase for an interview invitation. Our medical school is currently unable to invite you to interview. However, we have determined that you are a competitive candidate and you will continue to be considered during this application cycle. If there are changes to your status, we will communicate with you via email. Our interview season runs from August to February. You may be invited for an interview at any point during this time frame. Final notification of your interview status will be sent no later than the end of February 2018."

I received a pre-II rejection email last year in November.

I just received an email saying " Our medical school is currently unable to invite you to interview. However, we have determined that you are a competitive candidate and you will continue to be considered during this application cycle."

Is this a kind way to say I'm rejected?

No, I think people have gotten interviews in the past after receiving this message. It's basically a hold, if I'm not mistaken.

I haven't heard anything yet. When were you guys complete if you don't mind answering?

Also got the "on hold" email. Holding out some hope for some love from my state school

yeah same...got the interview later on email. i really hope this one goes through.

Did anyone receive a pre-hold rejection today? Or did everyone just get a hold status?

Either they sent out a lot of holds today or UA-Tucson applicants are very over-represented on SDN

Lol when the subject line has " interview status" on it and you get put on hold. Cold move

@UAZ COM-T Admissions Just wondering if you could offer any information about the hold process/status. Once placed on hold, or once we get the email saying we are not receiving an interview yet but we are competitive and will be reviewed throughout the application season for possible interview, are our applications looked at frequently? Are we looked at with the next round of newly submitted secondaries, or how does this work? Thank you!

Note: I'm not a member of the adcom nor have I ever been, just an MS2 here. This is based on my past experiences and what I've heard/read.

Individuals with holds are re-reviewed every time the adcom meets. As I understand it, any member of the admissions committee can draw a person on hold and recommend them for an interview. Based on past admissions cycles, I think about 25% of individuals (though I don't know the exact numbers/percentages, it could be higher) who are placed on hold are eventually recommended for an interview and your chances go up towards the end of the season as people start to withdraw from interviews after receiving acceptances. You can look at past threads for UACOM-Tucson and see individuals who were initially placed on hold, later asked to interview and eventually are accepted. So basically hope is not lost!! Though, realistically, your chances are diminished somewhat. In the past people, get really incensed at this purgatory-like state and this is unfortunately a consequence of having a more transparent process.

My advice to all applicants is after submitting your last secondary, pretend as if you have been rejected from all schools (stop checking that email!!) and begin working towards strengthening the weaknesses in your application (we all have them). Regardless of what happens, you become a more impressive and confident applicant and that will really show going forward in the admissions process.

You won't see "sent to screening" or every little status as you progress through the cycle. We email the larger steps as updates.
