2017-2018 University of Michigan

Definitely seems like they really are moving more toward holistic admissions. I didn't get an interview despite a 4.0/526 in-state, working at Michigan Medicine, and with IIs at other top 20s. Even had an ex adcom tell me there was no way I wouldn't get accepted haha... Just a couple years ago I would've easily fallen into their auto-II category I think, so they don't do that anymore and their admissions philosophy truly seems different now
were you an undergrad here? Because a 4.0 is seriously amazing and extremely difficult to get so I would be shocked if you did undergrad here and still did not get an interview. Congrats either way on your amazing stats!

Did not get accepted here for undergrad either despite 100th percentile stats out of high school as well haha so maybe they just don't like me.

oh wow! Well, there is no doubt you will be successful wherever you end up because you have phenomenal stats!! I am sure you have a great med application now (and had a great app when you applied for undergrad as well). I am honestly surprised by this but you still may get one of the last few interview spots here so I wouldn't give up hope just yet...especially not with your stats

do you guys think they're going to give out another huge batch of interview invites that are mainly in state like they did last year?

Question for those who have interviewed: were you allowed to jot down your thoughts before entering the station?

But honestly I dont think you’ll need them. Taking notes was something that helped me a lot during MMI’s and I still felt really comfertable doing UofM’s without them.

I heard Vegas has set the Over/Under on UMichMonday II's at 3

"Happy to share that a few more IIs were offered on this #UMichMedMonday. We look forward to your 24 Hours in Blue!"

..the world will never know

There must be some mistake because my browser indicates there are no new emails in my inbox.... should I contact the Dean of Admissions or the Dean of Medicine directly?

How holistic is UMich, really? Any accepted students want to share?

I'd like to say they are very, very holistic and mission-seeking.
I have a 3.76 GPA, and a 512 MCAT, and almost did not apply to UMich because I thought I had no chance. Vaguely, the interviewers truly want to get to know who you are as a person, and I think that speaks well to how holistic their approach is!

IS? URM?

I second this! I have a 3.89 GPA and a 509 MCAT, IS.

Dayuuuuuum. When were you complete if you don't mind me asking? Did you contact them pre-II at all? I promised myself I'd never be one of those "LizzyM/complete/URM?????" people but here I am.

I submitted 7/5, but did not receive a complete/secondary received email until 7/27. Got my II mid Sept. I never contacted them pre-II!

Do you guys think there's a cut-off for receiving an II? Like, would an October submission have absolutely no chance?

When you emailed your thank you letters to the admissions office, did they reply back saying they forwarded the letters to the interviewers?

Not at all! It is always advantagous to submit as early as possible because that means they will look at your application before a lot of other people. But there are still people who will get II’s that apply later.

If you are deferred, do you recommend sending a letter reaffirming your interest to the committee?

Did anyone interview November 10th? If so, when did they say you’d hear back?

My advisor always says no. That the only letters you should send to schools are update letters if something significant has happened. She used to be on an admissions committee and said that schools do not care if you send them letters of intent if you are waitlisted. Some other advisors may think differently so I would definitely ask for other opinions!

does anyone know when deferred applicants generally hear back?
The end of the cycle. Usually late April/early May
I swear I heard Carol Teener say deferred decision applicants hear back around March...I don't have any notes to confirm that though. All I wrote down was "holding pool until others come to interview". Since the last interview date is Feb 2 and they take about 5 weeks to get back, I'd think late March or early April is when you'd hear back.

You could be right. You could always just call and ask. There not going to know it’s you calling if thats a reason you don’t want to ask them.

In the packet we got during interview day, it said deferred decision applicants would hear back in March.

it's really slowing down. is this it? is it over for me? how long do these go for?

No sista. It's not over. So what that it's slowing down? Nothing is over till it is over. You have other applications in other schools. Chin up and emerge strong. If not this med school, then your next choice.
Perhaps this is too much optimism for the pre-med people, but let us not forget the end goal: to be a physician (regardless of the school).

Hey guys! I submitted an abstract to a national conference and it got accepted recently. Does this warrant an update? I know it's just an abstract, but I'm the first author on it so I'll be the one who presents the poster presentation at the annual national society meeting. It's also ranked #1 in its clinical specialty. Is this significant enough to warrant an update?
Another thing is, I already have 4 accepted abstracts from a different lab (none of which I'm first author for or presented for though) so I was wondering if this would come off as desperation. For most schools, I was planning on giving this update after the semester ended so I could update them about my grades. However, it seems like Michigan is slowing down its IIs so I feel like I should maybe send this update for Michigan now. Thoughts?
