2017-2018 University of Michigan

I know from my interview that last year a number of students were asked to take scholarships and defer a year because Michigan overenrolled, which reduced the number of spots this year. I want to say over a dozen but under two dozen students. Not entirely sure how that influences waitlists and what not, but it's info I thought I'd share nonetheless.

sorry if this has been asked before but what is the expected attire for the pre-interview dinner? or if there isn't, what were most people wearing?
Pre-interview dinner was very casual! Most people had on jeans when I was there. Super friendly atmosphere and really good pizza.

Did anyone else get waitlisted? I am surprised and disappointed because I thought the interview went really well... and I want to know what went wrong if I am the only one haha
Did you get waitlisted or deferred? I too felt that I killed my interviews and I got deferred first round of acceptances :/ On top of that I have heard that there are a lot fewer seats this year due to deferrals from last cycle so our chances aren't looking too great.

So on past twitter posts in 2013 it says that approx 5% are deferred, 60% accepted, and 35% waitlisted.
I can't find the exact twitter post right now, and also that was in 2013 and they may have changed their admittance percentages to prevent overenrollment

Ok, so probably a small group of us. I’m so curious why we got deferred and not kicked into the accepted group, ugh!!

Michigan's post-interview acceptance rate is ~70-75%. I'd guess ~10% more are accepted from the deferral or waitlist if this ^^ is true.

Cos they never use their waitlist, apparently. But why are the stats on deferred admission top secret?

At other schools, they provide fewer statistics than what Michigan provides. I think Michigan is really transparent about this process. I don't think it is their responsibility to provide every statistics possible though.

True enough. But being deferred feels random to most of us, and just want to know what it means... Stats might be one way to guess where we stand, more or less...

Plus, the number of students they pull from deferral is probably pretty variable so they don't want to report something that isn't useful and may cause them clerical headaches.

So has anyone actually had their application closed then? Since they mentioned it in their twitter?

So its just that email for now right...my portal hasnt updated and ya girl just needs some more security here..
Portal now says:
Status Message
Congratulations!! You have been offered admission to the University of Michigan Medical School. No deposit is required. A seat is being held for you!

Just rejected! Complete 7/30 and no status changes until now. I wish more school's were as transparent as UMich! Good luck to the rest of you 🙂

Edit: OOS

NB: I got this info off a 2015 post by the school itself:

...After October 15th, admission decisions are released one month after the interview. The decision will be admitted, wait listed, denied, or deferred (deferral will delay the decision for one month).

As usual, the most important info is in parenthesis....
( and it may be completely different for 2017-18 .)

Keep the faith fellow D's. We are a special bunch...

We are the D-listers! But this info seems wrong. In the email it says we can hear anytime until march bassically. So it's probes gonna vary from one month or until March for a decision.

Hmmm. I hear you Longshot6. But wasn't it roughly a month after interviewing that we got the big D in the first place?
So I was thinking that they will continue to interview in batches, and tell us our fate a month after a batch are completed ...But you are probably correct. I am pulling this out of my... After all I am only a D-lister.

This is outdated as I got deferred first round and didn't hear back in second round :/

Is michigan receptive to letters of intent? I will be interviewing next month and want to know. Thank you!

Just had mine, the dinner the night before is very casual.

Withdrawing from Michigan. Just got accepted to Duke yesterday and to U Chicago today. Hope this opens up a space on the "deferred" line...Best to all!
Congrats!!! But isn't Umich ranked higher than those schools? Just curious why you would choose those schools over Michigan.

I might be wrong, but doesn't Duke send out acceptances early March?

Edit: whoops, didn't read the next page!

First I did not get into Michigan, just deferred, and no one seems to know what that means! (I mean NO ONE.) All the top 20 schools are excellent, and pretty much equally hard to get into. Its that "fit" thing. I like the city ( esp the theatre) and the diversity. I like being on the UChicago campus--Im thinking about a joint degree maybe. Why hold a place I don't want and someone else does? Best of luck to everyone.

LOL Not that I care about this stuff. Not me. Not competitive. HAHAHA but Just found this: Pritzker School of Medicine is More Difficult to Get In: (1.6% vs. 3.2% Acceptance Rate) Michigan Medical School Offers Cheaper In-State Tuition: ($30,150 USD vs. $45,835 USD) ... Pritzker School of Medicine Has a Higher Median MCAT Score for Admitted Students: (37 vs. 36)

Sounds like some post-purchase rationalization lol

It's interesting to see that UChicago is a little less than 2%more competitive to get into and has 1 point higher median Mcat. Most admitted students don't really think about those metrics so thanks for sharing! I wonder why that is considering UChicago is #15 in research and #34 in primary care ranking while Umich is top 10 for both. Im glad you aren't competitive so these numbers won't bug you so much. 🙂

I think this can be attributed to location and selection criteria. No one is going to argue the Ann Arbor is a more desirable location than Chicago. Lots of people like Chicago, so lots of people apply there. Chicago has a higher median MCAT because they're actively selecting students with higher scores. My guess is that Michigan is a little bit more lax on MCAT scores, and places more emphasis on other parts of application like research/leadership/service etc. Higher scores and stricter competition don't necessarily equate to better schools.
