Current students: does anyone have advice for finding an apartment / recommendations on areas that would be good for students? I can’t do campus housing as I will be bringing my pet with me. (sorry if this is the wrong thread for this post!)
There's a giant booklet on housing, it will be handed out at MS0 weekend and made available electronically as well. It will have everything you need in there to help you make your decision. A lot of students have pets, so they can't live at MedPark, but all the other apartment complexes around school allow pets (with a fee).

I already live in the Dallas area and my lease is up next month so I already found a new place to rent that’s 6 minutes away from the school! Check out Locale apartments. They’re beautiful and I found that they had much better prices than the other comparable surrounding complexes. They also offered me a waived application/admin/deposit since I’m moving there to go to UTSW. They also have units with private yards if you have a dog!

If you google UT Southwestern housing survey it will pull up results for a page that UTSW does so you can look at housing and opinions from current students. I would check back occasionally because they haven't put up the 2018 one yet, but here is the 2017 one: http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/education/medical-school/assets/ms0-housing-survey.pdf
If you are going to MS0 weekend I think they will discuss it there as well.

I'm OOS so I didn't have a chance to look at apartments in person before moving here. I have a pet too so that ruled out medpark, but I used the housing survey extensively to narrow down some options and compared prices/reviews on Google and apartment hunting websites (apartments.com, rentler, etc.).

@idontknowwhatnametopick @almostMD2015 @talltee that makes sense that there would be more info at MS0 weekend, but the mstp revisit isn't until April and we have to start with lab rotations sometime in June, which only leaves a couple months for me to find a place and move across the country 😵 so I was just hoping to get a head start looking at places (but maybe I'm just overeager lol). I'll check out your suggestions. Thanks!

I was accepted here around December 20th, after having interviewed December 1. I think that OOS acceptances are done on a rolling basis. I'm not sure how many (if any) acceptances go to OOS applicants post-match, besides those that come from off the waitlist.
There are a lot of apartment complexes literally surrounding med park (the "on-campus" apartments), such as the southwestern. But if you google "apartments in medical district Dallas", you'll get a list of options. Some students live in uptown, which is a little pricier. And I know of a couple that live in downtown, which is a slightly longer drive. You can also check out west village and oak lawn.

Not a current student but have lived in Dallas. The Vibe and Century Medical District apartments are right across the street from Parkland. Apartmentlist.com has a great search tool where you put your budget, how far you’re willing to commute, and what features you want then it gives you a list of apartments.

The updated apartment guide should be available Friday, so there isn't much longer left to wait, you definitely don't need to wait until MSTP second look for that document. If I can get my hands on it before it gets posted online, I will send it to you.

Nothing keeping you from contacting a realtor and asking them to pick out a few places in your price range and geographic area. Make a long weekend trip to choose a place.

So how'd everyone enjoy MS0 weekend? Who all went?

Anyways @almostMD2015 I visited the Locale too, those apartments are great. The one thing putting me off them was the cost was slightly higher than other places, but if you have a dog the private yard is worth it!

@squishablecat Let me also recommend the Southwestern and Vibe apartments. Both very close to campus, reasonably affordable (it's no med park, but not too bad either), and pet friendly. Idk about Vibe, but the Southwestern units are really nice (washer/dryer, new appliances, etc) and they have a lot of amenities in their leasing office plus a mini dog park area. Also, MSTP specific advice, April is the perfect time to look at places and you can just take an extra day after the revisit weekend if you want to go around looking at apartments. I actually brought my parents to revisit (they didn't bother me during the activities, just chilled out at their hotel) and after the official stuff ended we went apartment hunting. Also maybe the current students can give you suggestions or tours of the places we live at, just ask.

Has anyone who's on the UT Southwestern waitlist heard from them yet? They told me I was on their waitlist like two weeks ago but I haven't heard anything from them since then. Thanks!

There's typically no movement until May from what I hear.

I think it starts slowly in April. Maybe a few lucky ones in very late March if Baylor accepts people around then and they (wrongly, obviously) choose to go there instead of UTSW 😉

Question: I’m taking a really hard upper level math/engineering class my last semester and may not get the best grade (i.e lower than a B or even a W if I decide I can’t handle it at all). Would this have any negative impacts on my acceptance? Also which option is better overall (a C+ or worse vs. a flat out Withdrawal)?

My GPA otherwise is close to a 4.0 but I just have a really hard non-science major and decided (perhaps wrongly and masochistly) to challenge myself my last semester.

(Edit: I’m contemplating a W because I want to stay in the running for Latin honors but obviously won’t do it if that could jeopardize my acceptance.)

If it’s not a required class a withdrawal is fine. However if you aren’t sure if you can get a C, withdraw. If you are sure you can get a C or better, it’s fine to stick with it. It’s not going to make a difference on your acceptance either way. Congrats on your acceptance !

The waitlist email says they'll assume that we'll consider attending if accepted off the waitlist and that a letter of intent isn't neccesary. Does that mean sending one would be useless?

They know your intent to possibly go there, otherwise you would have withdrawn your application already. That is why sending them one is not necessary, and I believe sending them a letter of intent after that email will only be negative for your application.

You can always call admissions and find out now that you got in! I don't think withdrawing would hurt in any way unless you needed this particular science class to meet the quotas. Just count how many science classes you've taken and if it's enough to meet the requirement, drop the class and don't look back, enjoy your life, med school is hard, don't make your last semester of undergrad hard too!

I sent one but I did it BEFORE they sent the email. I think once they send the email it just looks like you can't read instructions if you send one in anyway.

"After 5:00 pm CT on June 1, no medical school in Texas may offer a position to an applicant already accepted by another medical school in Texas."

I'm assuming this also applies to OOS students? Does anyone know? I'm hoping to get off Southwestern's waitlist and just trying to plan for the future.

Are your acceptances from Texas schools, or out of state schools? Applies to Texas acceptances.

If you've been accepted to another Texas medical school already, then yes this applies to OOS students. For example I got into Dell but preferred UTSW, so I planned on coming to either Dallas or Austin to look for housing the weekend after June 1st depending on whether or not I got into UT Southwestern. (book flights through Southwest that way you can just cancel/change flights last minute without difficulty!)

Edit: I just realized June 1st is a Friday this year... It was a Tuesday my year which made my fancy plan much easier I guess. You could always do the weekend after that, school doesn't start until early August so there's still plenty of time after June 1st.

Fellow Texas tech bound student here also hoping for utsw! I think everyone wants to go here lol. I’m a Dallas native (born and raised, never left) so that’s a big reason too.

When is there a bulk of the movement from the waitlist? I've seen some say April and some May. I know BCM is already starting to give out more of their acceptances.

Looking at the past threads and knowing that people are going to have to start dropping acceptances (e.g the large amount of Baylor/UTSW overlap) by mid to late April once financial aid decisions come out, bulk movement would most likely happen early May, then slow down to a trickle in June

If Baylor is moving, we will start moving soon too! There's always some die-hard Houstonians that get in here but prefer Baylor so they switch as soon as they get in.

When's the date by which you can only hold one acceptance this year?

The date at which a person with multiple acceptances must narrow it down to 1 is April 30.
Baylor and TCOM are also a part of this agreement, even though they are not TMDSAS schools.
See TMDSAS Rules page here: TMDSAS Medical: Acceptance/Match Information

TCOM is TMDSAS if I remember right.
Also, I heard they take 60-70 ppl off the waitlist. It varies year to year but that’s the general ballpark I heard?

you are right.TCOM is TMDSAS but if I left it off someone would say, "it's not an MD school, does it count?"

Does anyone know why it takes UT Southwestern so long to fill their classes? Most PT programs already have their classes full! I'm on the wait list as well and just wanna know if I will get accepted or not like everyone else! 🙂

are you applying to PT or MD?
MD waitlist action usually occurs in May/June, after people holding multiple acceptances have to narrow it down to one.

when do we expect a fair ammount of waitlist movement? I really hate the waiting game and would really like to be rejected if I am not likely to be accepted. Also, being accepted would be nice too

I don't think rejections come until 1. After June 1st if you have other TX acceptances or 2. Even later if you have no TX acceptances.
I'm surprised there hasn't been any waitlist movement reported at this point, but that doesn't mean there is no movement, just that movement isn't being reported on SDN (or maybe there truly is no movement).
Anyway hang in there, not that much longer to wait now! (but of course I remember that back when I was in your shoes every hour with no acceptance email in my inbox felt like a YEAR)

at least in Texas we have a definite end to this waiting game, although I think all of us UTSW hopefuls have gotten fairly good at waiting by now LOL. I do agree it is hard....everyday that there's no news is a mini stab to the heart

I was talking to a previous Admissions council member and said that there was minimal movement from the waitlist here. However, on the interview day, the students said a majority of the class comes from the waitlist. So confused now on the waitlist movement.

I don't see how there's minimal movement seeing how many people withdraw from Utsw for other schools especially the whole Baylor/UTSW overlap

That was what I was wondering too, but they worked on the committee for many years and said that they didn’t go down the waitlist as much. Weighing their word againist what I’ve heard at the interview is conflicting. Does anyone have a ballpark number of the waitlist students accepted?
