2017-2018 Wayne State University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Current second-year student just dropping in to welcome those who have been accepted and to encourage those wait-listed to keep hope. I interviewed in December and was accepted in April.
Thanks for answering questions!

What do you think are the best parts of the school? What do you think could use improvements?

What do you think is the likelihood that the new curriculum gets implemented next year and what is your opinion on the new curriculum? I imagine it's a bit of a catch 22 because the curriculum sounds better but if it gets implemented, there will likely be many hiccups.

Thanks again

Does anyone get rejected post-II? I know this cycle they are interviewing 1,000 people and I am just curious if all the non-accepted people are just held in queue in case seats open up. I really hope this isn't the case because then that means if you are waitlisted there is a massive pool for them to select from in the event that a seat opens up.

I wish someone would call and ask how many students are currently on the waitlist out of all the students that interviewed. Maybe I will do it, but im shy lol

I called for an update and was told all interview decision would be by mid-feb. Dude was not very helpful, seemed highly disinterested, and offered no insight whatsoever outside of that.

What would you say the waitlist movement is like at this school? I have been waitlisted since October and at this rate I don't know if I'm getting in... but to be fair I also haven't submitted any updates or LOI's. How much do you think submitting those things would help?

Would you attend Wayne over the school that's currently accepted you?

I just received a "matriculation package" from ACOM, a D.O school in Alabama I was accepted a few months prior.

After going through this forum, I have read about how Wayne State eliminates students that matriculate into other schools. However, some people have mentioned that they don't consider you matriculated until you attend that school's orientation.

The deadline to submit the matriculation package is May 1st, which to me seems a bit like too much of a coincidence given that on April 30th, many students will have to choose an M.D and reject Wayne State, opening up spots.

The actual orientation for the school is not until July 23rd.

Do you guys have any idea what the consensus on the matter is?

My profile is still in for review ever since I submitted on Sept. 6. Is there any hope for me? Are they just not transparent? I can't tell if my app has been reviewed or not.

Waitlist movement is pretty significant, I'd say. It seems like every other person was on the waitlist at some point, though that's just anecdotal. I personally did not submit any LOIs or updates, but that may have been because I really didn't do anything to warrant an update. I think at worst, it has no effect. At best, they like to see your interest. We're just kind of in that weird limbo period where lots of students are holding more than one acceptance and may be waiting for other schools to get back.

Sorry for the delayed response, busy week.

I could complain about the curriculum and how it's structured because I went through it, but since the LCME visit, Wayne is taking on more national trends and is moving to systems-based teaching. There's more white-space in the calendar now and things are changing pretty rapidly, for the better, I'd say. We like to joke that they're just kicking the rock down the street because it's always "next year's class" that's gonna have the big changes. That being said, I am more confident now that these changes will be happening with the next class, barring any major set backs. I don't have an ear to the ground or anyone close to the situation, but it seems like it's happening.

I've really enjoyed my time here so far, so keep that in mind when reading this. There's gonna be people who feel like me but also people who have much more to criticize. Wayne was my top choice FWIW.

Pros:
1.) Pre-printed course notes that (mostly) mimic the professors' lecture slides
2.) The professors. They all have impressive academic and clinical histories, but definitely seem to care about student success.
3.) Obviously Wayne likes to hang its hat on full-body dissection, which is a pretty crazy experience and really unique.
4.) Tons of space on campus to study
5.) I really like living in the city, if you may have reservations about Detroit. What's happened here in the past few years has been amazing, even since I came here in July of '16.
6.) Pretty robust clinical experience early on if you want it. Part of it is required for first year, but there are TONS of student clinics around the Metro area. Seriously, the emails never stop coming.
7.) Research - When I decided I wanted to do some research, it took all of a week to get myself onto a project. With DMC, Ford, and the SOM itself, there are hundreds of active research projects going on and its really easy to find a spot.

Cons:
1.) In my opinion, they try to do a bit too much with extraneous required things in the curriculum.
2.) Occasional lapses in organizational stuff, which they've been improving on to be fair.
3.) My current curriculum has some occasionally odd organization. (e.g. We had HEENT physical diagnosis while learning cardiovascular pathophysiology). Hard to say if you guys will have these issues.
4.) I'm more of a traditional lecture learner, so things like TBL and CBL sometimes felt a bit extra to me (stems from #1).
5.) Med school is hard, but you already knew that.

Called them today the guy said they’re reviewing until mid February and interviewing until ~mid March, so I’m assuming if no reply by then it’s a R

By any chance did he say anything about when decisions for recent interviews will be made?

OH MY GOODNESS I just got accepted!! My very first acceptance in my home town of Detroit! I almost fell out of my chair at work/died, and am beyond ecstatic right now.

Complete mid-July, interviewed early December, placed on alternate list late December. I sent in updates at the end of August and end of December.

Best of luck to those still awaiting an II or to get in! GO WARRIORS!

Congratulations! 🙂 This gives me so much hope since I got waitlisted around the same time as you. Did you get your acceptance notification through email or the portal?

Thank you, and best of luck to you my fellow Detroiter! There is absolutely still hope - last year they offered acceptances to 518 total applicants, I'm not sure how many they interview but that's a pretty healthy amount and for a pretty large class size. The update I sent at the end of December was pretty beefy, so I'm wondering if that was heavily taken into account/played as a factor in their decision.

Congrats! Has your status changed on your admissions portal yet?

Thank you! It has not changed yet - I recall when I got my II and initial admissions decision that it took several days, so I'll keep my eye on it for a little bit.

Congrats!!
Did you get an email to your personal email or Wayne email? Or was it just on your portal?
Thanks! It was to my personal email. I was worried about this too because I accidentally made a Wayne email months ago, and couldn't even remember how to access it.

On the online portal, it says that transcripts are not required to be sent to the school until after being accepted. Did you guys send them before getting accepted anyway? I guess I'm kind of directing this to admitted students but also any other applicants, just wondering what the best thing to do here is! Thanks and congrats to anyone that was accepted!

I did not send in my transcript prior to getting accepted, there's really no reason to. If you're aiming to update them with grades or anything of that sort, I would do so via the additional documents portal. I probably will send it in soon now though!

Also, does anyone know if they automatically conduct a background check, or if there's anything you need to do for that?

WSU still has not updated my status yet (pre-II) as I'm still in the Applicant in Review Pool. I updated my Fall transcript under the additional doc dropbox on 1/10. Would it be wise to also attach a letter of interest and an updated CV? Thank you!
