If by gunner, you mean motivated. Then yes, I've noticed that WSUSOM has plenty of highly motivated students. But that shouldn't be a bad thing or seen as a "slight". At the end of the day, as mentioned throughout orientation, courses, and all interactions with medical professionals - you want to be motivated the learn the most possible. You want to strive the hardest to be at the top of your class. Why? Because that means that you are doing the best in your pre-clerkship, clerkship, and etc - that you're best prepared to treat your patient and community to the fullest extent possible.
And no this doesn't make you jaded, less personable, or just an ass. In fact, WSUSOM takes into account professionalism, clinical skills, etc into your "rank" just like any other school. Add in the fact that Z scores don't affect your P/F, Wayne has plenty of highly, highly motivated individuals who I would easily consider "gunners" that are immensely collaborative as well. In fact, a "gunner", who is known the have scored at the extremely high end of our last set of exams, is regularly seen explaining concepts to his peers.
This isn't undergrad. Sitting at the front of your class, studying into the wee hours of the morning, really buckling down to get that 95 on head/neck anatomy isn't bad - its admirable and will make you a better physician. And whats even more admirable, is doing that while working collaboratively with your groups.
#endrant. Basically, I hate the word gunner. This is a professional education.
We'll all hopefully be saving lives one day; I would sure hope you're being a gunner and trying to maximize your very expensive education.
