Yeah it can give that vibe no doubt. I wouldn't recommend it anymore since it's >$100 now and that's ridiculous. At $70 it was better. The new owners are also renovating it, which probably explains the price increase. Thank goodness, I really like that place, if they can remove the weird vibes from it, it's gonna be an awesome vintage option once again

LOL wut. Please define "awful." We have the Omni, New Haven Hotel, The Study at Yale, and Marriott Courtyard, all in the downtown area. Look those up and tell me which one of them are "awful." They are the exact opposite – too fancy and expensive to live in for interviews. I already said Hotel Duncan is super duper old and isn't good anymore b/c it's priced the same as the Courtyard, which is ridiculous.

I can also guarantee that whatever you've heard "about New Haven" is either 1) dated, given by someone who's still referring to our urban decay of the late 90s/early 2000s or 2) someone who doesn't know ****, has never lived here, and is only listening to people recycle 1) and also delight in putting down a city they've never been to just to sound like they know something. I'm not being salty about 2) at all. People love talking about **** they don't know so they can put something down. Come for an interview and you will see for yourself. We're not Midtown Manhattan, but this is not a ****ty city anymore.

As someone who has lived in New Haven a total of 5 months, I can confirm this. New Haven't isn't ****ty.. Sure we have our homeless people but its still nice. Even the "Ghetto" parts of New Haven are fine. I have no problem walking in them. People are nice, and downtown (Where I live) is more than fantastic. You gotta really live in New Haven before you can form an opinion about it.

After walking 2 miles from campus, can you recommend some safe, good hotels? Preferably less than 100$?

And probably just going to suck it up and go hotel Duncan because at 150 a night it's really the only option.

I stayed at New Haven Village Suites for my interview and I think it was $97

What do you find to be the city/area's most attractive qualities? I come from a completely different part of the country, so I have no idea what to expect. And how is the music scene?
 
Ok important news for everyone interviewing. I was calling around at different hotels, I found that Hotel Duncan was 140$ or something on Hotels.com. But when I called them they actually gave me 3 nights over a weekend for only 80$ a night. Highly recommend as this is the only sub-100$ hotel directly connected to Yale that I could find.

This is the only sub-$100 hotel option in downtown then. I think that's a great deal, even with some of the weird vibes that you can get from Duncan since it's so old and vintage. Have fun! The one redeeming thing about the oldness is that if you need anything at all, the staff will be really enthusiastic to take care of it for you. Service has always been top-notch from what I've heard, even if the rooms could really use a renovation

  • Convenience of city w/ the feel of a small town (population ~150k, not overwhelming like other NE cities)
  • Great cuisine, all the popular cultures are represented in the food scene (awesome pizza too, different style than NY/Chicago)
  • Great selection of bars; New Haven is the only good place to hang out on the CT coast for miles around so you get a lot of nightlife traffic
  • Dense layout for a city of this size, very walkable and cyclable, car definitely not required for downtown area
  • Quite artsy, lots of theater and music festivals happen

Could any current students let me know if driving to New Haven would be feasible (from a nearby city). Went to buy a bus ticket, which led me to realize that is not an option and now I'm not sure what to do, and driving appears to be the best/only option. I have a student host, so I don't want to burden them by suddenly saying that I will be bringing my car. Is there safe parking in the area? Would it be too rude of my to ask my student host about parking at/near their place?

Not sure what city you're from, but there's a ton of greyhound options last I checked to travel into New Haven! Sorry if you've already looked at those options, just wanted to share in case you haven't. Hopefully a current student can answer your question.

It's not a burden to your host to bring a car or to ask about parking. A lot of us don't have cars though, so your host may not have much to say.

Unless you're staying with someone who lives in a house off campus or something, you will likely have to pay to park your car in a deck if you drive. If you are in a nearby city, it may be easier to take Amtrak or the metro north train. Parking is generally safe in the garages and on the street in downtown New Haven as long as you don't leave out valuables or have ridiculous chrome hubcaps or something lol. If you're outside of downtown, it just depends on the area, but my guess is that your host isn't living in the hood.

tl;dr bring a car if you want, but be ready to pay for parking if you do

Parking is $5 a night at the apartment towers one block away from the med school. If your host is in the towers, ask to use their name to sign in at the desk. If they're not, ask them to find someone who lives in the tower to give you their name and apt # so you can sign in at the desk. If they can't do that for you, PM me, I can find you someone who lives in the towers to use their name and you can get the $5 parking. Or maybe it's $8 for weekdays or something. Whatever. Way less than $24 at the garages
 
Just got II. Oct 27 isn't a bad or late date for a non-rolling school like Yale, right? Oct 13 and 20 were also available, but both weren't that great for me. I've started to have second thoughts after confirming 27th, though...

There were still tons of dates in November and December available, if anyone's interested.

I'm surprised October is still open at this point. I got invited in August and only had Oct dates (no Sept)

I got my II here on 8/2 and will be interviewing in a few weeks! I'm still slightly in shock but definitely getting more and more excited as the date gets closer!

Plenty of game of thrones fans around here, so if you come dressed in dorthraki garb you'll get plenty of attention.
 
Can anyone here attest to how late the interview day runs? It seems that the latest CT limo that is convenient for me is at 4.20PM and the website states that "we will be out no later than 5PM"

It depends on the time of your second interview of the day. If you have travel constraints, you can contact admissions ahead of time about it, and they should be able to schedule you an earlier time for your afternoon interview. That said, there are other convenient ways to get to the airport (e.g., metro north or Amtrak) if that's where you're going.

I actually cleared it up already. Neither of those worked for me because I am coming from Hartford and Amtrak doesn't run at the time I needed. I found a good CT limo time though.

Just a head's up, CT Limo is horribly unreliable, so you might have to wait quite a while. When I was an undergrad, some of my friends waited at Bradley for >2 hours. Heading to the airport is a bit better, but not by much.

Can any of the current students give their view on the average dress level of the social event the night before interview?

Admissions will definitely work with you because I'm in the same situation and when I filled out the travel survey there's a section for you to let them know if you need to leave early and they will try to schedule your interviews earlier in the day. I'm taking the last ctlimo from the med school at 4 on my interview day!

So - I was complete 8/17 for the majority of the schools I applied to, and thus far have only heard back with an II from Yale. Isn't this a bit strange? Or is Yale just relatively faster re: sending out the IIs?

I don't think so. Of the 5-6 schools I was complete at in mid-August, I've only heard back from one school as well (although not Yale). The rest of my IIs have come from schools in which I was complete during July. I think every school proceeds at a different pace (partially due to the number of applications, and partially due to the differing speed of various adcom members) and has different methods and priorities of who to send IIs to.

Yeah, this sounds right. Schools have different methods for selecting interviewees at certain times. For example, a low or mid-tier school may choose to interview ultra strong applicants early or late, because interviewing them early could recruit them before other schools, but it could also be a lost investment when they are more likely to go somewhere stronger. Other schools may give more priority to people who applied early, but that's not always the case either. I applied to one school in late October and got an interview 2 weeks later, but some schools I applied to in July never threw me a bone at all. Some people argue that interviews toward the end of the cycle are "for the waitlist," but this is not necessarily true. There are several people in my class here at Yale that were interviewed later on and got accepted before the waitlist. You never know with this stuff.

kind of really want to apply here, but my stats are low and it's getting late. would submitting a secondary now be a waste of $$?
