2017-2018 Yale University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any IIs today? If so, what time, and When were you complete? Thanks in advance

Incoming MS1 here. Feel free to ask me anything and I will *try* to answer
I am submitting my secondary for Yale and have a question: There is a self-identification survey (like disability, ethnicity, race). It says it is voluntary. Will that be bad if I do not fill out?

Does anybody who has sent an update know if you get a confirmation email or anything of some sort? in other words, how do you know that your file has been updated?

Hello everyone! I am applying for the next cycle in 2018. Although, good luck to everyone, here! I was wondering, maybe someone could know how important is non-science GPA for Yale? 🙂

Anything less than a 4.0, you better stock up on sunscreen for the Carribean....

Just kidding, there was an AAMC survey of adcom members and they all rated nonscience GPA as pretty important. But I think other factors in your app can maybe make up for it.

Thanks @Longshot6 . Oh shoot! I only took 3 or 4 non-science courses, from which I ended one with a B (psyc), in my first year. My sGPA is 3.97, tho.

Does anyone know how many they interview and accept post-interview for the MSTP?

Hey Guys, I've received an interview here and I'm struggling to plan out my return flight. I know that we could end be done as late as 5 pm but I was wondering if anyone here had an idea of how early it would be possible to complete the interview day. Yale mentions that they may be able to schedule our day so that we end earlier if we need to catch a flight but they don't mention how early that might be. I wanted to just check if anyone had an idea of that before I send them an email. Also if anyone has tips for their interview, that would be much appreciated 🙂

Actually I just called them and they told me when my last interview was. This was about 5-5 days before the interview.

hi all! hoping you can help me out with this; the yale website says "If you wish to submit an update to your application at any time throughout the application season (before or after an interview), you may upload a .pdf document using the Document Upload tab in the Secondary Application." BUT, my update is more of a new leadership position, not something I would typically convey through a PDF document. could i instead send an email through the portal? thanks!

I'm sure you could send an e-mail, but why not write an update letter, so you could tell them how has this new position has continued to prepare you for medical school/makes you a stronger candidate/how you've continue to grow (personally/professionally) within this new role? I guess you could do this in an e-mail, but may seem a little too informal for me

They probably prefer a PDF because it uploads to your file in their system. That may not happen if it's an email, but that's just my guess.

I'm not sure what stage of the cycle you're in (pre-interview, post-interview, etc.), but there is oftentimes the recommendation if you're post-interview to wait with updates until you can group them all at once and send them all together along with re-iterating your interest. Not sure if this applies to you, but I thought I would throw it out there.

How can you "convey" it through email but not PDF?

Write a letter in Word, export it as a PDF 😉

Anyone have any idea how many invites are left here? I know some threads have concluded invites are basically done. But how about Yale?

Yale's website says they send out interview invites August-February, so I would assume they interview into mid-late February before sending out decisions in March. They've probably given out most of their interview spots, but there's definitely still a chance of getting one.
Which schools have concluded invites?
The University of Michigan has only been sending out a fraction of the invites they used to every Monday, and I believe NYU wraps up their interview season mid-December. With the holidays coming up, I believe interview dates are a little more sparse in the coming month.

Just got an II here 😀 been complete since mid July!

There were a few spots in Dec (not any between Dec 15-22 if I recall flame grilled chicken), and plenty of spots in Jan.
dude congrats! seeing you kill it and get interviews at top notch schools is awesome haha.

Can anyone talk about the interview day? How many / what to expect? Also, it is actually true the day doesn't end until 5:30? :O

It's two open interviews, either faculty/faculty or faculty/student. The students actually work for adcom, so apparently their evaluations are equally weighed as faculty ones. Everyone is incredibly welcoming, and I felt really relaxed the whole time. They're scheduled throughout the day, so you'll have a bit of time in the waiting room. Mine were both in the afternoon, so I went to the museum in the morning! Some people left earlier, but everyone was finished by 4:30.

FinesseLife833, Thank you so much for your message! It really means a lot to me, esp in this long and tough process of admissions! I have no doubt that you will become a fantastic physician in the future.

For many of schools I got recently I had been complete for 4 months or so hopefully it helps show that us July completion dates still have a shot!

It's important but not going to kill you. I have no idea how our admissions committee makes their decisions, but I do know students with wide variability in certain stats. Generally if someone here is low in one thing, they're knocking it out of the park in another domain. When in doubt, just apply, man. Won't cost you anything but $$

Some people can be done as early as 3-3:30PM, but others won't end until 4:30 or 5. If you have time constraints, contact Barbara Watts in admissions before your interview date.

Interviews are conversational and generally very chill. Be prepared to talk about your own research background and why you think you're a good fit for the Yale system. There are no controversial ethical dilemmas, interrogations, or any dumb stuff. It's just to see if you're a good fit for Yale and vice versa. The end of the day is generally earlier than 5:30 and depends on the time of your last interview. You should have two faculty interviews that are ~45 mins each, and they can be scheduled in the morning or afternoon. I had one AM and one PM. IIRC they were testing out third interviews with upperclassmen on some interviewees, but 1) I could be thinking of another school and 2) they might not be doing that now. I would plan for two faculty interviews.

The plan for the day last year was like:

meet in admissions office for a talk about yale
financial aid presentation
time for AM interviews / time to go sit in on a class
lunch with a faculty member
campus tour led by MS1s (1230 - 130)
chill and talk with upperclassmen about yale (130 - 2)
PM interviews (230 - 430 or so)

Note that the students you interact with on tour and Q&A sessions do not participate in your admissions evaluation, so ask whatever you want.

This post is brought to you by not wanting to memorize bacteria. Good luck

Can anyone speak to acceptance rates post interviews at Yale? I was shocked when I got the II (my stats are much lower than the norm here) and I don't want to get my hopes up too much.

Actually I had one faculty and one student, and I believe most interviewees on my day did as well! This probably differs per day/per person though.

Yep, 1 faculty + 1 faculty/student is the norm. There are several students who sit on the admissions committee, and their opinion is weighted just as highly as the faculty members. (Sometimes even higher since they know who will make a good fit.)

Does anyone know whether or not Yale is receptive to LOI's?
